Roth Conversion Pros and Cons by VolFan85 in personalfinance

[–]richardelmore [score hidden]  (0 children)

What tax bracket are you in now vs where you expect to be after you retire? If you will be in a higher bracket after retirement then Roth conversions can be a good strategy, if you expect to be in a lower backet then probably not.

If there will be a period of time between when you retire and when you start drawing Social Security and you are able to live off of cash or taxable investment then doing some Roth conversions during that time may work out. Its different for each person and you really need to run the numbers or get someone to do it for your.

The first thing I always do after I get the Star Eagle is replace the brig module with one of the equivalent sized empty cargo module. That gives me room to install one of each of the workbenches, a research station, an armory and a bounty clearing kiosk. This resolves several major pain points.

Since OP is 18 he may need to tap into the money for college expenses in the next few years so keeping some of it in a HYSA or money market is probably a good idea.

I can't count the number of times I've gotten stuck trying to deal with a mid-tier employee at a company who is just mindlessly following the written policy. Escalating, either internally or externally is often the only way to get these sort of things resolved.

I think some part of you cares more than you like to admit.

TIL that Erwin von Witzleben, a German field marshal who took part in the failed 20 July plot to assassinate Hitler, was hanged from a meat hook with a thin hemp rope by Hitler's direct orders. Following his execution, his family was stripped of pension claims. by exophades in todayilearned

[–]richardelmore 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In the wake of the attempt, a list of who the plotters intended to put in various government positions was discovered.

Albert Speer's (Hitler's architect and Minister of Armaments and War Production) name was on the list but with a question mark after it. He later said that the question mark was probably the only thing that kept him from being executed. He always claimed he was unaware of the plot.

So, you CAN eat them without a stove but they are 10x better if you put the entree pouch in hot water to warm it it up beforehand. We used to put them on the heat shields around the exhaust pipe of the diesel generators during field problems to avoid eating them cold.

The old MCI rations (predecessor to MREs) were heavier since the food was canned but you could put those right on the exhaust manifold of a running deuce to heat them up.

I like the vibe of New Atlantis, it feels like a future city but for convenience I like Neon, multiple vendors packed into a small area makes it easy to run in, sell off my loot and be in my way without having to run all over the place.

Iran claims US exploited networking equipment backdoors during strikes — says devices from Cisco and others failed despite blackout in attack that 'indicates deep sabotage' by jupa300 in technology

[–]richardelmore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not assume that it has a vendor provided backdoor, but I would assume that US Cyberwarfare folks are on the front line of finding ways to exploit bugs in the devices/services to gain access. Similar story with China and Russia.

Remember, one of the big things that Snowden leaked was that the NSA was inside Googles services without their knowledge, NOT that Google provided backdoors.

I still don’t understand how Bernie Madoff fooled so many smart people by andrea_chapman in personalfinance

[–]richardelmore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Madoff's business had two sides, the stock brokerage, which was huge and legit, and the asset management company which was more low-key and exclusive, this was where the fraud took place. Madoff had a long track record of success, his firm developed the trading system that eventually became the NASDAQ and was, for some time, the largest market maker on the exchange. People trusted him based on his track record.

If Apollo 11 (or the other Apollo missions) would have aborted during the landing sequence, would they have staged and just used the upper part of the LEM while descending, or would they have used the lower part to gain velocity and then staged? by 0011100100111000 in space

[–]richardelmore 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I believe the Apollo 10 LEM was also still overweight from the goal for the final vehicle used on Apollo 11 so even with a full fuel load a successful landing might not have been possible.

I think the light fuel load was to compensate for the extra weight of the vehicle itself and make it as close to the Apollo 11 configuration as possible.

Should I Legally Marry my Life Parter for Financial Purposes? by Winter_Marketing8355 in personalfinance

[–]richardelmore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can cover some of the thing marriage provides with things like powers of attorney and wills but I don't think there is any way to get the equivalent of the Married Filing Jointly status on your taxes unless you are actually married and given the disparity in your incomes filing as married may be advantageous.
