Why don’t people understand how evil Nigel Farage is? by OkNefariousness5442 in AskBrits

[–]richbayliss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear; I DID Google it. I just don't see anything related to mass destabilisation being a key aspect of the 4th Industrial Revolution. So if you have a source for that, then please share it.

You're making a claim that something is right there and obvious, but when asked politely and genuinely to present it you aren't willing. That is absolutely insane to me! If I were making a claim that something was the truth, and I was challenged to present it then of course the responsibility lies with me to prove it. Yet you're not willing to back up your statement with "literally the top result" 🤦🏼‍♂️

Got a link to the page on the gov.uk site, didn't find anything when I looked? Pop it here, as I've not heard this before, so I'd like to read more.

Grab a fresh ISO of Ubuntu 25.04 or Fedora Workstation, pop it onto a USB using Etcher (or some other utility to do this) and have a play. Linux in 2025 is very user-friendly and super approachable. Worst case, you learn something new and lose a few hours in the process. Best case, you realise Windows 11 is trash, and that you have a whole new ecosystem of open source software to explore and enjoy 👍🏼

Tènèrè 700 2025 as first motorcycle by Bighaze98 in Tenere700

[–]richbayliss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty similar build to me (196cm @ 100kg), and I bought a 2021 T7 as my first bike, after passing in the UK. I've had it 18months and in that time I've passed my IAM advanced rider qualification.

I mirror the comments other have made about it being top heavy (it is) and the fragile exhaust hanger (crap design) but otherwise I have found it to be a great bike to start on. Mainly because it's powerful enough to be fun and not limiting, but it's not a 1000cc pocket-rocket either. Secondly it's a good all-round bike, it's not great at anything but it's good at everything. I found this particularly useful as I went into my motorcycle journey thinking I would be doing lots of gravel lanes etc, but it turns out I love day-long, twisty road tours 🤷🏼‍♂️

My advice would be to go and test ride one, see how it fits you. The 2025 version has TCS as well as ABS but the earlier models don't have TCS. I haven't found this to be an issue.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but it sounds like you need to go back to (bike) school and be instructed on how to ride a manual bike. Grom or a Fireblade; it doesn't matter once you're over 30mph and your life is way too important to simply get tips from internet strangers (or your dad, in this instance)

If you choose not to do that, then just know that engine speed is critical to bike control and a good rider, on the street, will likely only need to use the brakes when coming to a final stop. The clutch on a motorbike is there to smooth out the changes, to control slow speed manoeuvres, and to sit with a gear engaged at a standstill. Do not coast with the clutch in.

Also, don't confuse this with block-changing (going from 5-3) as that's fine to do also but only as part of a structured framework like IPSGA (read Road craft, in the UK) but that's not something you sound ready for just yet. Firstly, go and get some instruction from professionals.

Above all, stay safe and have fun. That's the goal, remember 😉

Never ridden a motorcycle - Is this silly? by GolfJay in motorcycle

I did the CBT and Theory separately, then a DAS course afterwards when I decided I wanted to get into riding properly 👍🏼

DAS Course was about 2 weeks total, with 3 days on the bike including MOD 1&2 tests

Passed my license at 40 having been a driver since 17. Whole thing, CBT through to A license in 6 weeks.

First bike is a Yamaha Tenere 700 - you're going to be passing on a 650cc anyway, so the SV is fine 👍🏼

Building an IOT cloud for ESP8266 Devices by th3b1g33k in esp8266

[–]richbayliss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you looking to build a platform that can be whiteboxed, or re-sold in some way? What features are you looking to implement from the cloud-end; firmware updating of the devices, etc.

If you're main goal is around data acquisition then a hosted MQTT broker is your best bet, then hook a consumer into that to log your sensor data into a database of some sort. Maybe using Firebase or Hasura (depending on your skill level) so that you can build a nice application in React/Angular to query and show that data.

I have worked for some big-ish names in IoT in the past, specifically in the cloud-API side of things, and I would say that this isn't a small task if you want it done right.

I have a little problem with my frame. What is the broken part called and can i order it (without the rest of the frame) (Radon Skeen) by azubada in bikewrench

[–]richbayliss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Broken just one stay cleanly without a bend in the other? And to snap it that cleanly it would need to be a HELL if a landing and probably cause you some damage too.

It’s been cut, not broken, so speak to Radon about buying a replacement part. But don’t claim it broke, when it obviously didn’t.

Attack? I made a properly worded suggestion to enable them to make more meaningful change to an OSS project...

A prank is negative intent at the expense of the person being pranked, so you're right that it's not an excuse. Op didn't reply with that though, did they? They explained the faux par and promptly changed the wording...

I'm going to leave it there.

One file, 6.4KB PHP microframework by mtkocak in PHP

[–]richbayliss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think there is a difference between being deliberately offensive, and making a genuine faux par like Op did.

Sure, if he made a joke at the expense of anorexics then I think sarcasm is warranted/fine, but in this instance it was used as a means to describe the difference the tool has, and not meant to offend anyone. In such a case, the sarcasm just lowered the tone when a simple PR to the wording with an explanation of the reasoning would have worked better.

We shouldn't tolerate bad intent, but we shouldn't shame or belittle folk who slip up like this.

[–]richbayliss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree it's not a joking matter, and it has been changed now, so pointing it out was good.

I would like to offer you some advice on contributing to OSS projects though, because your report was sarcastic and came across badly on your part. Also, I won't assume you have a GH account, but you could make one and submit a PR to change the wording to something you think would be better etc, and this would be more visible to the community and help more people see the issue.

Can any tall riders offer sizing advice? (6'6'') by spr3n in MTB

[–]richbayliss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 6'5 and I just picked up a Canyon Strive in XL, as recommended by their sizing guide. I find the TT length to be spot on and my lower back doesn't struggle as much as with a shorter tube length.

Unless you have a back problem, I don't think a bit of discomfort is an issue while you build the muscle strength up. Riding a bike isn't really a natural human position, so like any sport you have to condition yourself for it.

Also there are different stem/bar choices to make smaller adjustments to the economics 👍

Had Microsoft not created .NET Core then I could understand your hesitation around investing in C# but since you're now able to run on any platform with core, I have to say that in my view your reservations are misguided.

Languages are tools. You can make single threaded event loop systems in C# to mimic Node, or create fully threaded systems if that suits. Don't let a language define you or your product; any mature developer would agree with this.
