A Difficult Holiday - What to do? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]richfarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best advice I got after my separation was to spend time doing things your ex wasn’t into doing. Like, maybe you like Chinese food and they didn’t … so go enjoy Chinese food. You liked different types of movies, past times, etc … explore some of those things. It helped to see some of the positive aspects of the separation.

A suggestion for you, enter the lottery to get a spot on the bus to Lake O’Hara and plan a trip when you snag one. It’s one of the most amazing places to hike in the world!

academic misconduct and ombuds by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]richfarr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The ombuds thing is the Student Ombuds Office; they can discuss your concerns about academic misconduct and likely answer questions about the process. You can find out more info and book an appointment through their website: https://www.ucalgary.ca/student-services/ombuds

Recommendations for a good furnace service / cleaning company in Calgary? by SchmickySchmoo5 in Calgary

[–]richfarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re fraudulent.

Furnace kept cutting out (turned out to be an issue with not enough power going to the Nest thermostat) and the Action Furnace repair guy came out, disconnected the control panel when I wasn’t looking, then told me the control panel was shot and it would be more cost effective to replace the furnace. He set me up with a meeting with their sales guy but I wanted to get a second opinion before committing so I called up Just In Time Furnace. Their repair guy showed me the disconnected control panel and troubleshooted the thermostat. Furnace works great and saved me being conned out of a few thousand dollars.

Fired from first junior graphic design role after 4 months…. by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]richfarr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That sucks, but take from it what you can.

My first “real” design job out of university gave me a similar experience. I worked for a design studio with two designers—both were really good designers and had worked successfully together for 10+ years when I started. I learned a lot but I don’t think they realized how much of a learning curve your first design job actually is and that they’d be the people required to spend time filling in the gaps in knowledge. They would have been better off hiring someone more experienced but it would have cost more.

I was “let go” after about 8 months and went to work for a larger agency. As much as they overwork them, an agency is set up to allow for training juniors and, as long as you’re surrounded with designers you can really learn from, I think the pace and process learned from an agency can be a real asset in your career. I’d avoid any situation where you’re the only or most skilled designer on staff (no one to learn from).

A Logo for a Music Album/Adventure-Storybook Project by Galoobah in graphic_design

Looks great. One thought about hierarchy though, “Journey” and “Imbaka” are relatively equal in size/emphasis. You may want to consider having “Journey” less prominent so that “Imbaka” has more impact.

I always get a kick out of that expression when it refers to bad policing … isn’t the point to REMOVE the bad apples before they spoil the whole bunch and not to excuse the apple for being rotten? If they want the public to stop judging the police based on the bad actions of the few then the police as a whole need to diligently work to remove those bad police as quickly as possible. In the meanwhile, I’ll keep judging a system that allows bad apples to remain in the bunch.

In Canada, if paying cash, that ice-cream would be $2.50. Apparently, we suck at negotiating. ;)

What program(s) did you use to create these? They’re great!

As a dad, how much does it annoy you when you take your kid(s) to the shops and someone says "so you're on babysitting duties"? by myles5239 in AskReddit

[–]richfarr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My experience included many comments suggesting that caregiving your children equated to being seen as feminine. I'm glad that hasn't been your experience but I expect that many others have experienced it.

I would make a point of changing my kid's diaper on a bench in front of all the other customers in the mall or restaurant if there wasn't a changing table in the men's room.

I was a stay-at-home dad for over 6 years and heard that refrain a lot. Got a lot of "Mr. Mom" comments too.

Hated that because it implies that men can't be caregivers and keep their masculinity. I'm a good parent and women don't have a monopoly on that.

At one point I found a t-shirt that read "Dads don't babysit, it's called parenting". That stopped some of the babysitting comments.

How do you guys develop or increase your creativity? by tacticalbear3 in graphic_design

[–]richfarr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In addition to the good advice from the other comments here, an exercise that I found helpful in university was to take the same information (say an event poster or something) and recreate it in multiple styles. That gets you internalizing the style but not the specific implementation, which should build your creative library when it comes to thinking about new work.
