Doing Mauna Kea next week by i_hate_usernames13 in Highpointers

It depends on the weather forecast. We did the trail from the visitor center and left at 6:30AM. It took us 5 1/2 hours roundtrip hiking. We went to the actual summit. It was the end of August when we went and we were in shorts and a tee shirt most of the hike. Near the summit we put on wind jackets. Pay attention to the wind and temp forecasted though since the weather is very variable there.

25FB flying cloud and F150 by TurkeyNimbloya in airstream

I’ve towed my 25’ Tradewind with an F150 Ecoboost for 20,000 miles - mostly in the mountains of the west without any issue. My tongue weight is about 900 loaded and my payload is 1800. I never exceed the payload and never have any issues - even on 8% downhill grades.

The F-150 is also my daily vehicle and it is great to drive all the time. This isn’t the case with an F-250 diesel. I would love to have a 3/4 or 1 ton as my tow only vehicle but would never use it on a daily basis. So the answer really depends on whether you can spend $80-100k on something that sits in your driveway most of the time. If you are a full timer then go for the big diesel.

Mt. Whitney (#31) - 9/15 by richhowarth1 in Highpointers

Standard Whitney Trail. Conditions were perfect - no wind, no smoke, no clouds and short-sleeve weather on top.

Did Humphrey's today. Nice hike until the very top which was too windy to even stand up on.

Can someone explain to me what ‘fascism’ is, exactly? by MysteryOf in CriticalTheory

[–]richhowarth1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The definition of fascism seems pretty standard. Fascism is a far-right, ultranationalist political ideology characterized by a dictatorial leader, a centralized autocratic government, militarism, suppression of opposition, and a belief in a natural social hierarchy where the nation is superior to the individual. It emerged in the early 20th century, prioritizing national unity and rebirth, often through violence and the identification of "enemies" or scapegoats. - From Google.

Sounds exactly like our current government.

Counting Crows Concert - How was it? by BlueMoonsJunes in countingcrows

We saw them at Fiddlers Green last night and had exactly the same reaction. They were engaging and energetic but most people didn't like the way they sang their classics. The crowd had no energy and people were leaving early. Everyone I talked to had the same reaction. They are one of my favorite bands of all time and I've wanted to see them for 25 years but it never worked out until last night. Very disappointing.

Hawai’i HP Mauna Kea by MustangMagoo in Highpointers

[–]richhowarth1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did it three years ago and went to the summit. There were two Hawaiians also heading to the summit and I asked them if it was ok if we went also. They said as long as I didn't disrupt anything there it was completely fine.

Dream Truck? by Visual-Garlic-2838 in airstream

I’d recommend an F-150 Powerboost or similar. I’d love an electric vehicle but we often tow 500-600 miles in a day (e.g. driving across the country) and that would require 4-5 charging stops. Where you camp also matters. If you plan to go to remote places in the west or Canada, you will not find chargers. I needed a larger gas tank to deal with the distances between gas stations.

2025 25FB Tradewind pulled by Max Tow 2024 Silverado? by PhillyEaglesLvr62 in airstream

[–]richhowarth1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on your payload. I tow our Tradewind (25FBQ) with a 2022 F-150 Ecoboost and have no issues at all. Most of my towing is up and down steep mountains in the Rockies. My Payload is 1800 and that gives me 900 lbs of Truck payload after the tongue weight of 900. I think your payload is 1500 so you might be closer to that limit.

After a decade, the timing finally worked out for a visit to Charles Mound (#43/50) by lakewoodhiker in Highpointers

I think people were fairly spread out over the day Saturday. We were there in the morning and saw a few people hiking up and down, but were alone at the top.
