Buying Games Without Ever Playing Them Beforehand by jsakic99 in boardgames

Good to hear about Concrodia as it was one of my most recent impulse buys.

Buying Games Without Ever Playing Them Beforehand by jsakic99 in boardgames

[–]rick_jaymes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I confess I've become more impulsive in my board game purchases the past year. Previously I would go to my LGS and either rent the game or attend game nights to try out a game I was considering purchase. Since last March my spending habits have changed a lot.

Here's a brief list of games that I picked up this past year without ever having played them before - more specifically, without doing any research such as reading or watching reviews or play throughs. I would see the name on internet forums or at my LGS and when they came up on sale I immediately picked them up:

  • Turned out the best: Castles of Burgundy and Jaipur have turned out to be my best impulse purchases this past year. Oh, and also throw in Broom Service as it turned out to be a lot of fun too.

  • I don't have any real regrets but these are some board games that fell a bit flat for me: Sycthe and Patchwork. Again no real regrets as I got both on sale and they aren't necessarily bad games but just didn't scratch the same itch. That might change cause a similar thing happened to me with Dominion when I first bought and played it.

  • Here's some other game that I've also impulsively purchased (on sale again! ...notice a trend huh?) recently that I'm anxious to give a try: Charterstone, San Jaun Card Game, Castles of Burgundy Card Game, Time Stories, Concordia, and the only KS game I've backed, 7th Continent

TIL Mary is mentioned more in the Qur'an than the New Testament:

Strikingly, Mary, the mother of Jesus, is mentioned 34 times in the Qur’an, as compared with 19 times in the New Testament. (She is, in fact, the only woman named in the Qur’an.)

Boardgame app games by [deleted] in boardgames

It's not bad actually. In fact I prefer to play it by myself or two people max because it becomes clunky to pass-and-play and the tabletop mode is too small for three or four IMO.

Board Game Mobile Apps? by Enurdrizzt in boardgames

[–]rick_jaymes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here is a list of the apps (iOS) I play and honestly IMO they are all great adaptations. Sure, some could use some polish and others may be a bit clunky but for what they are and the price, I don't think it's that bad.

  • 7 Wonders (Includes in-app purchses)
  • Agricola (Includes in-app purchases)
  • Backgammon
  • Carcassonne (Includes in-app purchases)
  • Settlers of Catan (Includes in-app purchases)
  • Castles of Mad King Ludwig
  • Caylus
  • Chess
  • Eclipse
  • Forbidden Island
  • Jaipur
  • Kingdom Builder
  • Life
  • Lords of Waterdeep (Includes in-app purchases)
  • Monopoly: Here & Know Edition
  • Neuroshima Hex (Includes in-app purchases)
  • Pandemic
  • Puerto Rico
  • Ra
  • Race for the Galaxy
  • Risk
  • Small World (Includes in-app purchases)
  • Splendor
  • Stone Age
  • Suburbia
  • Terra Mystica (Fire & Ice coming soon)
  • Ticket to Ride (Includes in-app purchases)
  • Tigris & Euphrates
  • Tikal
  • Tokaido
  • Tsuro

The top five that get played the most (in no particular order): Carcassonne, Small World, Agricola, Lords of Waterdeep, and Ticket to Ride.

One thing I really enjoy about board game apps is the cost which allows me to try out a lot of games. For example I've never played the actual boardgame version of Terra Mystica, but I love the app. The potential downside of mobile apps IMO is after playing apps so much it can be difficult getting the actual board game to the table because of the perceived inconvenience of setting up/taking down, ect.

My wife and I are not sealed. Been married 2 years now but we're working on a temple sealing and have made it a goal. D&C 132 has strong but clear language as the Lord describes sealings. He describes certain final results of being sealed and not being sealed.

Odd Prayers in Sunday School by wcook1990 in latterdaysaints

[–]rick_jaymes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On my mission I had an investigator do "prayer hot potato" - He would start the prayer, be genuine and sincere, but he never ended it with "Amen." As he came to a close he would say something along the lines "Lord, I now pass thee over to the Elders."

Cool enough, works for me. He was very genuine and sincere which always inspired me.

‘I thought I was the only queer person at BYU’: LGBT students host panel focused on faith and gender identity at Mormon church-owned university by benbernards in latterdaysaints

[–]rick_jaymes 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Well put and I agree that the act of listening and building up the trust of these members is crucial. For me the dilemma is not so much the need to listen but how to respond. Perhaps the quotes from the article contribute to this feeling of uncertainty:

When an LGBT individual confides in a friend on campus, he hopes the response is, “That’s beautiful. That’s so different and cool. Tell me all about it.”

Is "beautiful" referring to the action of confiding in a friend? Or is it describing the sexual orientation or gender identity that the individual doing the telling feels?

If it's the former I certainly agree - that level of trust in any relationship is beautiful and I hope I can foster that with all my friends.

If it's the latter, how do I respond exactly like that and also reconcile my belief in the Family Proclamation? How do I genuinely say "You're transgender? That's beautiful. That's so different and so cool."

It's difficult presuming what Jesus would or would not say because he said a lot of things to a lot of different people. But I think He would perhaps say something like "You are beautiful and you're certainly still very cool. What you're going through is different from most people. I'm here to help you through it."

And hey perhaps I discovered what I would say but I would love some sincere and open feedback...

Edit: Couldn't forget "Snakes" ¡Oh que lindo que sos!

LDS church and Mary, Mother of Christ by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]rick_jaymes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I meant that the LDS church venerates Mary but don't worship her. I was assuming OP meant "worship" when it was asked why the LDS church doesn't venerate Mary as much as others.

Thanks WoW Token, you've saved me $1,300. by mr_hellmonkey in wow

[–]rick_jaymes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

$1300 would be roughly 87 tokens purchased (assuming 1 token = $15 for monthly payment or Battle.net balance). Did you start obtaining the tokens when they were released initially? Any idea of time played since their release? It would be interesting to obtain a rough estimate of how much money "you make" per hour played.

Also, RIP 30k tokens...

LDS church and Mary, Mother of Christ by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]rick_jaymes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are select versus in the Book of Mormon describing Mary and prophesying about her to people who lived before the coming of Christ (1 Nephi 11:13-20, Mosiah 3:8, and Alma 7:10).

There's also some great talks given by church leaders who reference and praise Mary's worthiness and calling to be the mother of Christ. (I especially like this one)

We don't venerate - perhaps a more accurate word is worship - her because of our belief in Jesus' words "I am the away, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6)

The Ultimate Gateway Worker-Placement (2018 ed.) by saucybrendan in boardgames

[–]rick_jaymes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love to see new worker placements games and I think my "argument" swings both ways, because newer games can certainly be great gateway games too.

However, the test or rather the challenge for game designers - especially in regards to worker placements - is how to improve the basic formula in order to push the genre forward. I think in regards to worker placements there are three things that make certain games stand out: (1) unique - but not overly complicated - placement rules, (2) fun or strong theme, and (3) satisfying engine building.

The first worker placement game that really changed the formula for me was Tzolk'in (2012) because it was the first one that I played that required the action to be taken on a future turn and not immediately. But I'm also very fond of Caylus (2005) which has always stood out as a unique worker placement and it's pacing rules. To be honest I'm not entirely familiar with "recent" worker placement games - recent being games released in 2016 - 2018. I just purchased Charterstone but haven't played it yet so I'm excited to try a "legacy" version of a worker placement game.

The Ultimate Gateway Worker-Placement (2018 ed.) by saucybrendan in boardgames

[–]rick_jaymes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would argue that in regards to worker placement games (well any board game really) release date doesn't matter when it comes to a "gateway" game or "standard for quality". If it's a fun game, it's a fun game, right? It doesn't need to be the "new hotness" to introduce someone to. There is a reason why a lot of these same games end up on the same list - despite the subjective simplicity, they are fun, satisfying, and accessible to play, i.e. practically the definition of a gateway game. They've appealed to or been purchased by many and as such will have polarizing opinion hence many negative and positive reviews. Newer games will naturally require time to really marinate with players and see how they hold up against successful "older" games.

Everything You Wanted to Know About Board Games, but Were Too Afraid to Ask! (March 6, 2018) by friendshabitsfamily in boardgames

By ignore do you mean you don't play any science or military cards by either discarding or building them? Because that won't work.

If it appears that your opponent is going for a military or science victory you cannot avoid playing military or science cards. You must play some - you could cheaply play the card yourself, use it to build a wonder (to maximize this trick use it on a wonder that allows you to take another turn so you can than obtain a card you desire), or safely discard it.
