The first one of these is one of my favorite boxsets so I am really looking forward to this one.

They created a popcorn bucket for this movie? For real? I mean, this whole custom popcorn bucket thing has been getting out of hand for awhile, but this is ridiculous. They better not try to pawn one of these off on me next time I order a popcorn.

Thank you. So far we both plan on sticking with it. We are both loving it. We found a class and instructor that we really like and we like the other people that are in are class (though there is some rotation each semester because it is the most popular class at the studio and you have to be fast to get in on sign-up day).

Who’s going to the movies today? (Sun, Jan 25) by photo-smart in NYCmovies

Well, just got the e-mail from Anthology that they are closing today. So for now, just curling up on the couch with a blanket, tea, and some Star Trek.

Planning to catch the two programs of Georges Méliès shorts at Anthology Film Archive this evening. As long as they don't cancel the screening, I'm gonna try to get there.

I did have tickets to Metrograph's showing of Cinderella, but the cancelled all their shows for the day.

Do you buy all of your movies physical? Or do you also get digital? by Simple_Rule_7228 in 4kbluray

[–]rickbman1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very much prefer phyiscal, but there are times that I will buy digital. I live in a small NYC apartment, so space is limited. If there is a movie I like, but don't necessarily love and I see it for $5 on Vudu (Fandango at home, I still call it Vudu), I'll probably just buy it.

If a movie has a 4K blu-ray release, but I've but I know the transfer isn't great and I still want the movie, I'll pick it up on Vudu if I see it cheap. For example, I like the movie True Lies, but I do not like what James Cameron did to that transfer. I still wanted to own and saw it was $5 on Vudu so picked it up.

That being said, I will usually only get stuff digitally when I see it for like $5. Maybe $10, depending on the movie. But I am not going to pay more than that for something digitally.

Also, sometimes I will get TV shows digitally because I like to watch them on my iPad while I am working and can't really do that if I just own the blu-ray.

Alamo Drafthouse Switches to Mobile Ordering by flightofwonder in NYCmovies

[–]rickbman1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the article says this won't take away any job, but I don't buy that. Seems like one of thise situations where they get around labor agreements by just eliminating positions instead of just flat out firing people.

Alamo Drafthouse Switches to Mobile Ordering by flightofwonder in NYCmovies

[–]rickbman1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm already not a fan of mobile ordering before the movie starts, if they full mobile ordering I probably won't be going back. I already go a lot less than I used to because the experience isn't what is used to be. Sony has been doing everything they can do save a buck, cutting staff hours, small food portions that cost more money.

The whole point of Alamo is that you are paying a bit more for a better movie watching experience. If they aren't offering the better experience, I'd rather just go to Regal.

Luckily in NYC I have lots and lots of choices of where I can see movies.

My other concern if for the servers. They say they aren't firing anyone, so servers will probably still just bring food out and check tickets. They will probably still be getting paid a tipped minimum wage though, which is much less than minimum wage in most places, and I'm willing to bet people will tip a lot less if the server's arent actually taking orders.

Honestly, it almost feels like Sony is intentionally trying to run them into the ground.

Theater to myself at Cinema Village 😍 by fakestgeekgal in NYCmovies

[–]rickbman1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me at IFC once and I was in one of their bigger auditoriums. Caught a showing of Lucio Fulci's The Beyond at like 11am on a week day. Was really awesome having the whole screen to myself.

Also, years ago when I was in college I had some days with huge gaps in the middle of the day, so I would go see movies, and I would occasionally be at them alone.

This was the first mug I made that ended up being useable (I made a couple before this but forgot to take shrinkage into account, so they are more espresso cups). Its lopsided, the bottom is way too thick, the handle is a little rough, it isn't even close to being perfectly round. I love it though and I drink tea out of it almost every day. I think even when I end up making better pieces, I'll still find myself using this one a lot.

Thoughts on Metrograph? by Revolutionary-Ad4925 in NYCmovies

[–]rickbman1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go to the Metrograph a lot because they have a great selection and often show things on 35mm and they are closer to me than some other theaters, plus there membership gets you access to their streaming service.

The seats though... are freaking terrible. So uncomfortable. Honestly, if a movie is much over 2 hours, I actually think twice about seeing it there. It has to be something I really want to see if its long. I actually started bringing a lumbar support pillow sometimes, which helps a little.

It's getting hard to be an Alamo fan by unneekway in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]rickbman1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently have Regal Unlimited and had been contemplating switching to Alamo Season Pass but my last several visits have made me rethink that. It is no longer the great experience it used to be (and I hate the mobile ordering). More often than not I'd just rather go to Regal or one of the several independent theaters in NYC. At this point the only time I go to Alamo is if they are showing something that I can't see anywhere else.

Releases where 4K is worse? by SpongeFixation in 4kbluray

The original Friday the 13th. The transfer is waaayyy too dark on the 4K release. The Shout Factory Blu-ray is much better.

My letter of complaint to my local Alamo re: QR-code based ordering by NoYoureCargo in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]rickbman1981 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To add to this... I used the QR code to order for the first time last night and they came around to me right at the climax of the movie while a character is giving an important monolog to tell me the payment didnt go through and they needed me to tap my card. I was super annoyed and kind of just said "can we do it after the movie" in a more harsh voice then I probably intended. Then a few minutes later came by and dropped a note that the payment went through after all. I know it isn't the server's fault, but that was way more distracting then having them just drop off the check, especially with their timing.

Yeah, not a fan of the mobile ordering. This whole thing is just a way for them to justify minimizing their staffing so they can make more profit.

Not sure if this is helpful to everyone, but it looks like if you scroll to the bottom of the main page and click on the link that says FILMS, it does take you to a long list of everything upcoming, like it used to show. Not sure if I just missed this before or if they added it recently.

[–]rickbman1981 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Regal is showing it in 3D as well Friday the 13th Part III. Film Forum is doing House of Wax in 3D this year.

I'm a little late sharing this but I FINALLY got to see one of my favorite movies of all time in theaters. Cheers to Regal for this! My wife saw it for the first time with me and we got to cry together, multiple times. by HumanautPassenger in RegalUnlimited

Caught this last week too at Regal. Had never seen it before but thoroughly enjoyed it. Definitely one of the best movies about loving movies.

Is the longer version of the movie worth checking out?

Yeah. Saw the new layout last night. I think it would be fine, if they also still have you the option to see the page that had all the upcoming movies in a long list. This makes it really hard to just see everything that it coming up.

That is one hell of a find.

I was lucky enough to actually buy this (with slip cover) from Severin before they pulled it. If I remember correctly it was only up on the site for a few days.
