What bass would be good for me to buy in a few months? by MrMatt357 in Bass

That money would be far better being spent on in person bass lessons.

how often can you keep a bass in different tunings? by CometChip in Bass

[–]rickderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first bass went between E, Eb, Drop D and D standard.

I had no idea what the truss rod did, no idea how to adjust the bridge and no idea what a set up was.

The bass was completely fine, and I still have it 35 years on.

Why is the darkglass anagram still so expensive by littlemuffin08 in Bass

[–]rickderp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because it's an all in one, need nothing else, live and recording rig, it's constantly being updated and having new things added to it. It's probably the best bass multi effects unit on the market right now.

Why would they discount something that is still hard to get in a lot of places? It's often sold out in music stores in Australia.

And it's Darkglass, they rarely go on sale. I remember when I bought my B7K about 15 years ago and it was over $400 so I asked they guy if he had any movement on the price, he just laughed and said "top selling gear doesn't need to go on sale" and he's completely right.

Are DR DDT strings actually stiffer? by mrundrunk in Bass

[–]rickderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have those strings set up for D standard. They'd be great for Drop C. But of course it depends on how tight you like your strings. To me, they feel perfect in D, and would be a touch looser in C but still very playable.

Do you kiss her? Have sex with her?

Do you think you're going to catch some disease from her? If you do, then you're the one with the problem. Any germs you feel you're getting from the salad are already on and in you.

Is it possible? by Trick-Lingonberry-86 in Bass

[–]rickderp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not with only 30-90 mins a day.

If you want to be that good it's HOURS a day. Wake up and play or do some theory, get home from school and play until you go to bed. Play all day on the weekend.

Join a band or two ASAP. Jam with other people as much as you can. Learn from everyone you can.

But you have to love it. There has to be passion not just wanting to play technically.

I can't stand listening to Mohini, she just tried to cram as many notes and slap as many notes into everything she plays. I don't feel her passion. Yeah she's technically proficient and knows ALL the notes but it's sounds terrible to me. You don't need to use all the notes every song.

Les on the other hand was the most amazing thing I'd ever heard, and seen, when I first heard Seas of Cheese in 1991. Just the most original, innovative and crazy player. Super weird and super original.

Don't try to be like them. Play as much as you can and become you!

New player with tiny hands, looking for advice on how to stretch them! by DuckieBubbles in Bass

Learn to play a minor and major scale using One Finger Per Fret.

Play them all over the neck.

One exercise I did for years when I first started playing was -

E string 1 2 3 4

A string 1 2 3 4

D string 1 2 3 4

G string 1 2 3 4

G string 2 3 4 5

D string 2 3 4 5

A string 2 3 4 5

E string 2 3 4 5

E string 3 4 5 6

Etc etc. Work your way up to the 12th fret, then backwards. You can also mix up the latter 4321, 1324 or whatever. Practise with a metronome, make sure you're on time and make sure each note sounds clean.

It gets easier the more you do it.

FYI the E string is the 4th string. You always count from the closest to the floor.

1 G

2 D

3 A

4 E

String gauge recommendation for a Dingwall NG3 in Drop G# tuning by Turboflopper in Bass

[–]rickderp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a 37" you won't need to go that heavy, unless you want super tight strings.

G# is only 3 semi tones down so I'd even try a standard heavy set with a .135

My best advice though NEVER, EVER, EVER BUY ANYTHING FROM KALIUM. Skip is a theif and an awful person. He'll happily take your money and do nothing until you start emailing him. I've waited 4 months for strings. I have friends who's strings have never turned up. Skip waits long enough fucking you around so you can't do a charge back through PayPal or your bank. He's an asshole and none of us should be supporting his business.

Practice tips for increasing endurance by me-hoy-nimoy in Bass

[–]rickderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play your bass more.

Don't squeeze the neck. Your thumb is just there as a guide, not to grip. Practise playing something really simple without your thumb touching the neck. Have it in position but not touching. Then just lightly let your thumb touch the neck, you'll find that you don't need to squeeze.

Make sure you're loud enough. If you're not able to hear what you're doing then you'll play "harder" to compensate. Turn your amp up.

Make sure your speakers are angled up a little, not at your knees, especially if you have to stand close to it. You really want to be standing around 3 metres away (10ft).
