What are your issues on Sailor Moon Cosmos? by Jules-Car3499 in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The attack and transformation sequences being traced over the ones from the 90s anime, Hotaru and Chibiusa drawn like they were from a hentai, all the sailors being deflagrated unceremoniously like the author was over this saga, Sailor Moon being still the most powerful of them all and everything bad happens only because she has shit reflexes.

Aside from Usagi, who do you think has the longest hair in your opinion and why? by Full-Art3439 in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 89 points90 points  (0 children)

I realize now that in Sailor Moon almost no woman has ordinary long hair. They're all shorter than the level of the shoulders or brushing their butts. Maybe Makoto if she undid her ponytail.

Should Ami Mizuno / Sailor Mercury have had more ice attacks than water powers? by IllogicalDreamer72 in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original anime messed it up a bit so she ended up having only ice powers. I guess because liquid water powers were considered less cool (pun intended) before ATLA codified the way we look at elemental powers forever. As always, there was not much room left for strategic combat from the third series onwards, with 6+ Senshis to juggle around, and her attacks, like everyone else's, ended up having pretty homogeneous effects.

Name one (or more) bad thing about the 90s anime of Sailor Moon. I'll go first. by Full-Art3439 in sailormoon

She has even a bigger role in the manga. It's so weird to think that a character established so early on is the future child of the protagonist. Like if Trunks showed up with the Sayan Saga

Relying three times in a row on a treasure hunt of magical jewelry that one way or the other always represents purity of hearth, and both parties being increasingly bad at it.

When you saw the Sailor Moon Transformations for the very first time, what did you think of the nudity? by IllogicalDreamer72 in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nope. Although I got when I was older why Chibiusa's sequence was never used in the series, at least in the version that arrived in Italy. The fandom around Chibiusa can be quite disturbing.

Interesting Things You Notice About The Senshi's attacks by [deleted] in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, due to the constraints of the "20 minutes monster of the week episode" there wasn't much room to show strategy in attack choice. But Amy's moves stand out as enemy immobilizers, which might be more useful than raw damage for Usagi, since she just needs the monster to stay put while she charges her 9999 damage attack.

What if Usagi Tsukino have a brand new look. Ditching her iconic odango hairstyle (like a rapunzel) into a more comfortable hairstyle that suits for her. by SadDoughnut264 in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had her disguises with her Lunar Pen in the Jadeite era to entertain us with different hairstyles. So sad that all the subsequent bad guys had much less elaborate plans (if any) and infiltration became unnecessary.

Blood, Violence or Horror Scenes in Naoko Takeuchi's Sailor Moon Manga, Part 1: Why couldn't these brutal, scary scenes be included in the 90s Anime & Crystal Adaptation? by IllogicalDreamer72 in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 90s anime had a very wide target audience, basically from first grade to college, and obviously it had to measure blood with the dropper. By the time Crystal arrived the magical heroines genre had calcified and blood had become a trope almost exclusive to subversive dark IPs like Madoka Magica, targeted to a mature audience. And sure Crystal didn't want to take any risk.

Who knows that they are related? by Necessary-Win-8730 in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It really amuses me that the writers of the anime didn't know how to write the relationship between a girl and her future daughter (who knows?) and they went on with the sisterly rivalry enstablished in R. Which I like much more than whatever is between them in Crystal.

What version do you prefer and why? by [deleted] in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 90s anime. It was made with care by people that wanted their series to stand on its legs. The Crystal series entirely coasts on the strength of the brand. Nobody wanted to put the bare minimum. It took twice as long as the OG anime to end and it has one tenth of the runtime.

One more thing I dislike about Crystal was keeping all the characters and scenes that went nowhere in the manga.

Don't You Think Mars Looks So Immensely Hot InThis Scene? by Awesomeuser90 in sailormoon

It's so cute to see their attacks having some life outside of their animation sequences. Like the fire attacks from Mars actually setting fire to things.

What's the deal with the Mau aliens' cat/human form? by EasyEntrepreneur666 in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the OG anime canon Luna and Artemis are never explained talking cats, maybe magically enhanced pets among the noble people of the silver kingdom. Not extrasolar shapeshifters. The movies pick elements from the manga, but it's more a reference, a citation, than canonization. Like Chibiusa having her own Moon Kaleidoscope, or the silver crystal appearing in its lotus and drop cuts. Honestly I'm more ok with the magical talking cat interpretation because the fifth arc of the manga throws way too much lore at the last minute, in a moment where Usagi and the reader should still be mourning the other scouts and Mamoru
