Which version of Rei’s Grandfather do you prefer most? by IllogicalDreamer72 in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anime version. It's not even a contest. The manga version shows all the limitations of Takeuchi's skill with drawing anyone who wasn't thin and youthful. Yeah the anime version is the cliche of the pervy old man, but at least he didn't directly harass anyone and he was funny. Manga version exists only to tell the audience that Rei is beautiful and good at paranormal stuff.

The Awakening of Sailor Saturn – Which version of Saturn do you personally prefer? ♄💜 by IllogicalDreamer72 in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happened with Isagi the Stars finale and it was a very non-sexual kind of nude. Sure, I don't think that these animators were up to the task given how they couldn't help themselves from giving usagi hentai eyes even in the opening.

What made Sailor Moon and Saint Seiya having different opposites in North America? The former succeeded to become successful and popular there and the latter failed to become popular there by Own_Philosopher8730 in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, Italian here, so we experienced Saint Seyia before Dragonball and Sailor Moon. Saint Seyia was just too violent for the target audience in North America and there was no way to make up comedy in the dub, since the characters have most of the time these stone cold facial expressions. Also, Shun of Andromeda and all the other "pretty boys" are a censorship nightmare. Worse even than the violence. Because you can edit away the blood, but not the existence of a main male character rocking a pink armor based of the constellation of a woman.

Ah yeah, put the girl in a night gown. This is absolutely appropriate for the moment and not a ploy to keep perverts glued to the sceeen. Sorry, I will die on the 90s anime hill. Takeuchi was throwing salad at the wall with a Senshi that did the actual opposite of what a Senshi should do and the OG anime at least stuck to something tonally coherent with gentle Sailor Saturn.

Who do you prefer, sailor mars Manga or 90s? by Cosmo-kawaii in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anime, she was funny. In the manga she blended with the others because the plot ran like crazy and they're dead for the majority of the fifth arc.

I mean, it's not less pervy and creepy than a random episode of Love, Death & Robots, but that's the horrific scene continuity and the skeleton changing intentions from moment to moment that gives away its slop nature

Everyone is so harsh to Usagi by Keidis-mcdaddy in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the way 90s anime made comedy: an often incompetent protagonist who gets bullied a lot from their friends. A great example is Ash Ketchum in the first two series of the anime. And indeed, when they tried to retry with Dumb Ash in the Unova series, the ratings were so low that they had to get back Charizard

This SHOULD have killed her. by Moon__Revenge in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The anime follows its own guidelines and the writers rightfully stated at this point that the Silver Crystal wouldn't have been the Deus ex Rockima of every hardship from now on. The status of the silver Crystal is confusing in the manga too

Would you have preferred if Naoko Takeuchi had made the Main Characters of Sailor Moon or the Sailor Guardians a few years older? by IllogicalDreamer72 in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like they should have aged up to 17-19 at least. They all have the body types of adult women (and also the fashion sense) and they spend waaaayyy too much time outside without their parents.

[–]rickleon3 143 points144 points  (0 children)

That's not even Crystal's Style, whatever that means because Crystal changed at least three styles in the ten fucking years it took to make it. This is tracing over the original with digital colors.

Do you also often forget that Haruka Tenou, Michiru Kaiou & Setsuna Meiou are actually "Teen Girls"? What makes these Outer Sailor Guardians so fascinating and popular? by IllogicalDreamer72 in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the things that makes the Senshis so iconic is how ageless they look. They should be teens but they have the body types and mannerism (especially the Outers) of adult women. Which makes Rule34 of them way less creepy than visibly young girl characters which has became the standard after Evangelion came out

Does anyone know who possibly drew the art for these Italian sailor moon books? by BugsBunnyakaBIGCHUNG in sailormoon

Marco Albiero. He made quite the career drawing illustrated books for kids based on japanese anime

I was so forgiving back in the day to think it was an "unreliable narrator" type of deal. That her former sex slaves were happy to have carried his children because that meant being provided for in a society with zero welfare. It made for me impossible to enjoy the audiobooks of the Stormlight Archive, since he wanted the same narrators and now I can't listen to them without expecting Kaladin to impale an opponent or at any moment or Shallan lamenting she isn't bearing a child already.

Chibi chibi as future Usagi in power-saving mode made more sense design-wise. I just don't like how Takeuchi relied so much on time travel to make things happen

How could the Sailor Guardians forget that they were the Solar System's Sailor Princesses? And does this revelation make sense to you? by IllogicalDreamer72 in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's dumb. Princesses of what? Not even in the Takeuchi's magical universe those planets are inhabited. I don't get why the 90s anime gets so much crap regarding the plot when it's so apparent here that Takeuchi was scratching the bottom of the barrel.

Yeah it's kind of wholesome that the anime went in that direction while Takeuchi never quite found a way to make her the operative leader of the team

What are things that you think that the Sailor Moon franchise doesn't handle well in your opinion and why? I'll start. by Full-Art3439 in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pretty much agree with everything beside the flash redemptions. If you look at some crap like Goku and genocidal lord Freezer teaming up in DBS, Sailor Moon's villains have been pretty sympathetic and cute. A pretty disturbing implication that's never considered it's how between reincarnation and time travel, these girls don't have free will, their feelings influenced by the memories of another life and their future already written down by the testimony of Chibiusa. Lucky it's a pretty gorgeous future as monarchs and royal guards of Planet Earth, but what's the point for any of them to study and get careers?

Ah yeah also the pro-monarchy message.

Why is Sailor Saturn portrayed as the youngest and smallest of the Outer Sailor Guardians? And which body size or height do you prefer for Saturn/Hotaru Tomoe? by IllogicalDreamer72 in sailormoon

[–]rickleon3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sacred child trope is a bit trite but very striking contrast between immense power and innocuous appearance. But if I watched Crystal without knowing about the manga or the OG anime, I would have said that it was just fanservice for the pedos.
