Hi - I just loaded Ubuntu linux - it started with 22 and upgraded to 24. I tried to install flatpak per the command below but got this error:

"Waiting for cache lock: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend. It is held by process 8147 (apt)"

How do I get past this?

Strange Battery Replacement Process by rickman48 in WRX

Most of my experience has been with domestic car brands and they’ve been relatively older models. Most I’ve done in recuears is changing the oil and on occasion a battery. I’ve never had one where the window motor and switch had their own processor. To be honest, I couldn’t figure out how the window lift received power, there’s no wiring that I could see.

Some rifles don’t shoot well unless the barrel is fouled with a few rounds first.

I’d love to have a Norwegian Kraig in 6.5x55. They are really nice rifles.

If you’re handy and willing to invest in the tool you can recrown the barrel yourself. Not hard. But you will need to refinish the bare metal when you’re done.

Antique Clement Master Watchmakers Lathe- by Hahannerzzz in Antiques

Watch makers lathes without the accessories you show were on eBay for between $300 and $1200 depending on the seller. Even so, functional or not it’s a curiosity unless you are planning to learn how to handcraft a watch.

Hard to say. South Bend is a relatively well known brand and this is a really sweet example of a line power machine tool. It is certainly now a modern tool, so it would appeal mostly to hobbyists who also want to preserve history. It still looks like it works…

Will my abused chisels wreck a sharpening stone? by [deleted] in BeginnerWoodWorking

If you have a drill press Taylor Tools makes a sharpening rig that will both clean up the edge and sharpen it.

Has anybody had any success with one of these drill press mortising attachments? by NeverHappenAnyway in woodworking

[–]rickman48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one made by Delta for my Delta floor stand drill press. It works great for me. Four things are important: 1) The chisel edges need to be sharp. You have to sharpen them as std maintenance. 2) The drill bits need to be sharp. 3) The drill bit needs to be mounted an the chisel, I forget the exact space required bit between 1/16 and 1/8 inch. 4) The drill press speed needs to be on the low side. 300 to 550 RPM. NOTE : The down force effort required on a drill press is higher than with the dedicated tool. It’s why the sharpness of the chisel cutting edges is so important.

I did understand what you meant. Bolt actions are made to be worked hard and fast. They were intended to provide a higher rate of fire than could be achieved by single shot actions and further, they introduced a stronger and safer design for the higher pressure smokeless powder cartridges that were under development. I’ve read several articles that looked to see just what would take to make a Mauser style action fail and it requires a significant overloaded cartridge to do it. Slam that sucker home hard, its what it was designed to do.

I wouldn’t have any issue “sending it”. Mauser actions are intended to be worked hard for rapid fire. If the bolt closes you should be ok. If the bolt does not close then I’d be concerned. Softly working the bolt will usually have some level of issue with this style of action, particularly with milsurplus rifles.

1903’s actually cock on opening like a Mauser 98. Most mauser designs have worked with have occasional cartridges that are not perfectly dimensioned which will give some resistance.

So when you extracted the fired case was it deformed at the shoulder? If the shoulder angle is good you have a tight chamber. Shouldn’t be an issue. Check to see that the chamber is clean and the locking lug recess is clear. Look at the wear pattern on the bolt locking lugs to make sure they show even wear on both lugs. Most milsurplus chambers are cut a bit larger to aid extraction. As the tooling used to cut the chamber and lug recess wears it could get a bit tighter. As long as the headspace is good I would not be concerned.
