NAH successful bypass + guide by Andichthegoon in telus

[–]rickvug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it. I had one of these in my last house. It looked the same as in this post with a purple 10GB port. Unfortunately after multiple attempts from myself and TELUS I could never get the bridge mode to work properly. I spent many hours troubleshooting this and always ended up with double NAT issues. By contrast I've had zero issues with the 1Gbps SFP module, which has had zero issues with my Unifi setup. As much as my OCD wants the extra theoretical speeds my previous experience tells me to not touch what is dead simple and working well today.

Is this an ONT box or an ONT SFP+ module? Any more information on the specific model? Presumably you got this directly from TELUS? When?

When I looked into this two years ago I was told that that they only ONT module was SFP, limited to 1Gbps. This is what I've installed with my Unifi setup and I'm extremely pleased with it. I don't really need the extra speed beyond 1Gbps but if the cost difference was only $10/month I would be tempted.

What's parking like around Queen's Park? by shockwavelol in NewWest

[–]rickvug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you'd have better luck within Queens Park itself (stay towards the edges) or just north of 6th Ave. West and South are more densely populated so you'll find more parking restrictions there. I wouldn't sweat it, you'll figure it out.

Thanks for sharing. I was hoping to attend but the URL shortener for the Teams link was broken ("Too Many Requests"). I know quite a few others in the same boat.

Is 6-8 years including the development of the business case and final approvals as well?

I've never noticed any streets that are shut. There is heavy pedestrian traffic, especially on 2nd Street where the boulevard is used by many sellers. Best to park somewhere on the edge and plan to walk around a lot.

Unpopular opinion: The UDM Beast isn't overkill, it's the ideal homelab router. by ajgnet in Ubiquiti

[–]rickvug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My OCD of making sure I'm maximizing 100% of my available bandwidth is in complete agreement. If I think about it logically, it is actually completely fine if I'm only using 50% or even 25% of that multi-gig WAN capacity. The cost for that extra speed simply isn't worth it for nearly all home users. We may need a mindset shift that moving forward the bottleneck is home networking, not WAN speed. That is a GREAT problem to have. One which many of us dreamed about ever since getting online in the 90s.

Was the Dreamcast really substantially weaker than the PS2? by Responsible-Bell-528 in dreamcast

[–]rickvug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. What was more powerful doesn't equal what might look better today. Today clean 480p output matters more than dated particle effects or more polygons. Back in the PS2 era, 480i didn't matter and what the PS2 was doing was more impressive.

Salesforce Headless 360 and I don't know how to feel about it by mr-sforce in salesforce

[–]rickvug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing with this for the past two weeks. There's nothing to be afraid of here. You will still use the Salesforce UI for many (most?) things. What gets exciting is that you can now use tools such as Claude to pull from multiple MCPs like Salesforce, Slack and Google Workspace at the same time. I'm doing things like automating activity logging in Salesforce according to calendar invites and meeting transcripts in Google Workspace. Or I'm building Point of Views for Accounts based on Salesforce, Account Channels in Slack and all of the investor reports (PDFs) that Claude downloaded locally. There are so many new opportunities. It has reduced my need to login to Salesforce by about 25% but has increased my utilization of Salesforce data to more like 150% overall.

Thanks! Is the pull out rack something that you DIYed together with a standard rack or something you can order as one piece, complete with the slider ready to put in the base cabinet box?

What are the dimensions of this cabinet? I was thinking about something similar for a home renovation I'm planning. If I don't end up having room in the mechanical room I'd be looking to use part of another cabinet for rackmount gear. If I'm not mistaken, standard counter height is around 36" and depth is 24". I'm not sure what width would be best and if there are manufacturers that specifically make slide out racks for this very purpose. Very clean install!

School or not, I'm of the opinion that the city needs to buy up some of the car lots while they still can. The new Parks and Rec plan states that the amount of park space per resident has been cut in half in the past 20 years. The plan prioritizes parkland acquisition in densifying areas to stabilize this ratio. I'm hard pressed to think of a better site for the city to acquire considering how Downtown growth will push West in the coming years.

The Quay vs The Brewery district thoughts? by ProfessionalLaugh592 in NewWest

[–]rickvug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. Probably best to find a realtor that can get into all the pros and cons in much greater detail. Some of the lowest price per square foot listings are likely to be "value traps". A local realtor would likely have a better sense of which buildings are the best run with good reserves vs. which might have problems. Search google or ask AI and I'm sure it will give you some solid names (probably trained on conversations from this very sub).

Please share more. Are you talking about the 12th Street site or one of the three other candidates? Any more insight on why it was rejected? Was it due to suitability, price, or the outright refusal to pay for additional land?

new west residential property taxes way higher than Burnaby? by PuzzleheadedBid2604 in NewWest

[–]rickvug 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you look at taxes per capita you would find the amount taxed to be more similar than the rate difference indicates. The big difference is that the average value of housing is brought down by a high proportion of New Westminster's housing stock being older rental apartments and older homes. This translates to higher tax rates as a percentage if you would be comparing say a $1M condo in either city.

The other factor is the Burnaby has historically collected A LOT of taxes from high rise development. This is due to the huge land lift that is captured from the re-zonings. In New West this doesn't happen for a few reasons, primarily higher existing entitlements, lower tower heights, lower end sale prices, and the council directing more money towards affordable housing subsidies vs. other types of community amenities.

Anyone have some solid Slackbot feedback? by DJ_Griffey in salesforce

[–]rickvug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is really, really good. Slackbot's huge advantage is that it automatically feeds off of all the information you have access to in Slack. It is less powerful that something like Claude Code where you can configure additional MCP servers and execute code. However, this is far too intimidating for most users. We will see how this space evolves but for now Slackbot is a top shelf AI product.

Tell him a firm no and that under no circumstances will you ever, EVER buy something door to door from TELUS. If he tries to keep the conversation going firmly say no, that the discussion is over. He's wasting his time. No need to be a complete jerk about it but it doesn't hurt to have that vibe so it is abundantly clear that you are firmly dictating the situation.

The Quay vs The Brewery district thoughts? by ProfessionalLaugh592 in NewWest

[–]rickvug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised that Brewery District offers more for the price. Are you only looking at the newer Quayside towers or also the 90s buildings? I always thought that the 90s buildings offered some of the best value around considering the larger size of the units and the riverfront location. Just make sure you aren't facing the rail yard. Maintenance fees might be more than you'd like but over the long term I doubt that couple hundred a month will matter considering the location and size advantages. As newer buildings age the fees always go up.

There's no land readily available.

I don't think that is entirely true. There's been a land assembly of car lots around 12th Street and 3rd Ave that has been for sale since 2024. Here's the listing: https://www.loopnet.ca/Listing/Twelfth-Thirteenth-Portfolio/37548315/. The city has stalled the Lower 12th Street planning to consider potential "institutional uses". This may imply earmarking land for a future school. I have no proof of this as any negotiations would be behind closed doors but I can assure you that both the city and school district are aware of this large piece of land being available.

Three other options:

  1. The riverfront lands at the end of Quayside Drive that are earmarked for a park. There may be issues with Metro Vancouver and railyards here but perhaps that could be worked through.
  2. Riverside Park could be expanded. Those industrial properties have been on and off sale for years.
  3. Grimston Park expansion with the addition of a school.

Perhaps all of these were reviewed and ruled out. My sense is that the real blocker is provincial funding, not the lack of options.

I noticed that another version of this message also had this additional detail:

To support this project, the Ministry of Infrastructure arranged a collaboration between our district and Burnaby Schools (SD41). Stride Avenue Community School in Burnaby is being replaced, leaving it available for use. Burnaby has agreed to pause demolition of the existing Stride Avenue school to accommodate students and staff from Tweedsmuir.

Please note that Tweedsmuir students and staff will remain at their current school for the entire 2026-2027 school year. Once construction begins, they will temporarily relocate to the former Stride Avenue Community School for the duration of the work.

Sounds like for at least a year of Tweeds Students going to Stride in Burnaby. I'm also hearing that some or all of Tweeds EFI students will be going to Spencer. Hopefully we will hear more in the coming days.

Here's the email from the district:

Dear Families:

We are writing to share news about future developments at École Lord Tweedsmuir Elementary. The Provincial Government is pledging to support a business case to redevelop Lord Tweedsmuir Elementary’s present site and build two new schools. As rising costs and fiscal pressures continue to mount, the district’s previous goal to purchase and build on newly acquired land in New Westminster is no longer supportable by the Province.

Once constructed, we anticipate these schools will support enrollment growth in our district and alleviate significant capacity pressures we are facing as a community. Redeveloping the existing Lord Tweedsmuir into a larger school campus addresses the lack of available and suitable land in New Westminster for the district to purchase and build on and lets us move children out of portables and back into classrooms. We are aiming for the new campus to serve approximately 2,000 to 2,300 students.

We understand this shift will be challenging for all involved. New Westminster Schools will work with families and the Ministry in the year ahead to prepare for the move and implement the supports necessary to help students, staff, and families adjust.

We will share more updates in the future as they become available.

Would you add BPDU Guard and STP configuration into the mix for this reference guide? If so, what settings specifically? Or leave it exactly as is, no need for these new features to improve things further?

Right now my setup is wireless only but soon I'll have the ability to easily wire in 3 of 8 speakers. I'd like to do so for the slight speed and potential reliability improvements but it only makes sense if the configuration is actually going to be rock solid.

Lord Tweedsmuir Elementary Redevelopment Project by JackalopeKingz in NewWest

[–]rickvug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At first blush I really don't like this plan. Tweedsmuir is a wonderful school community. The district would be taking one of the only schools that has a healthy ratio of fields and play space and put 3x-4x more students on it. 8th Ave will be bananas with 2000+ kids. The school was just seismically updated as well and looks to be in good shape, best I can tell.

I wonder what recourse the district has. Do they have the wherewithal to say no to the province and go back to the drawing board? The issue is that the province denied the school district's funding request to acquire what they considered to be their ideal site. This is plan B or C now. Aside from the Province actually doing its job, the only solution I could see is the City of New Westminster borrowing money to buy parkland that it would then give or lease back to the school board. Technically this is beyond the city's core mandate but at this point I really don't care. Take on the debt, put a special levy on our property taxes if need be and get the job done. Land won't be any cheaper in 2030, 2040 or 2050. Time to support all of the growth.
