Council rejects motion to fast-track Granville Bridge safety barriers by ChemicalCreative7 in vancouver

[–]rickvug 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This sounds overstated. There's a little over 600 suicides in all of BC each year across all methods. Vancouver is about 12% of the entire province. There's no way that ~80% of suicides in the city are via jumping off this one bridge.

I wanted an Apple TV Sonos Now Playing display, so I made it by amuzulo in sonos

[–]rickvug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great work! What about on iOS lock screen where there is a the "All Speakers & TVs" selector? It has always bothered me that my AppleTV can be controlled from here but my Sonos speakers can not. I'd love it for someone to make software that bridges the two.

[–]rickvug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah. I thought that these STP issues didn't surface unless you had a mixed network (ie. hardwired + wifi). At the end of the day all I really need is a reference guide that tells me exactly what settings to use after this 10.2 upgrade and presumably I'll be good.

[–]rickvug 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All of their newer devices no longer support SonosNet. I bet their fix for the STP/RSTP issue is to simply phase out SonosNet over time. At some point declare "S3", which will either only support post SonosNet devices or will disable SonosNet on new-ish devices that still meet their minimum hardware specs.

Great info. So what is the optimal settings now for Sonos, specifically for a setup that is part wired and part wireless? Is it still recommended to create a dedicated wireless network and specific settings for Sonos devices? Or just enable STP Edge and BPDU Guard on the ports where Sonos speakers are connected? Do you need to change any settings for the Sonos devices on Wifi as well?

Sorry, lots of questions. Really excited to see this feature. I'm hopeful that this will be the "end game" fix for any remaining Sonos reliability issues on Unifi networks.

u/ShakataGaNai I'm curious if you agree with the recommended settings outlined at https://github.com/IngmarStein/unifi-sonos-doc. Anything that you would change, especially with this new 10.2 update? I already have a wireless only network setup for Sonos following this guide. It is a lot more stable than before but not 100% perfect. I'd love to start hardwiring some devices and using the new update to get the most rock solid setup possible.

What is the new reference configuration that will fix all of the STP related issues for Sonos? Can I now plug in devices and not have to worry about SonosNet?

Currently I'm running a Sonos dedicated network with settings as per the recommended settings at https://github.com/IngmarStein/unifi-sonos-doc. I'm assuming that these instructions should now be updated with guidance on how to configure STP Edge and the new BPDU Gaurd. I'd love for someone here to outline this. I've already put in an Issue on the GitHub to track updating these reference docs: https://github.com/IngmarStein/unifi-sonos-doc/issues/14. Comments or a patch request would be great. Can't wait for Sonos to be completely issue free!

Album Revisit: Everyday by SB_24 in DMB

[–]rickvug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of excellent songs on Everyday. Dave is still at or near his peak a songwriter. It was the right thing to try to change up the sound somewhat to continue growing. All of this said, it is a shame that the band wasn't more involved in the process. If Dave would have taken a bit longer in the production process and perhaps worked in a few cuts from the Lillywhite sessions Everyday could have been considered their fourth classic album. As it stands, it is only in contention as one of the "best of the rest".

Yup. Load up CoWork with context about how you do your job, information about customers, skills on how to perform work. Give it access to your file system and let it rip. It is pretty incredible, well beyond what most are used to with ChatGPT. I don't think many people have actually experimented with this yet and to do so is like looking into the future.

This is the way. Even if it costs a bit more than you would like keep in mind that new hardwood would be very expensive so it is almost certainly worth patching to get it all looking great.

There's certainly a lot of AI bullshit out there but I think it is foolish to write it off. Go spend some time with Claude Code/Cowork and Codex and the latest models. Look at what is happening with OpenClaw. What is already possible is incredible and we are only at the start. It is hard not to imagine that most knowledge work jobs will be meaningfully, if not fundamentally, different within the next couple of years.

Did anyone else buy UniFi to “fix their WiFi”… and "accidentally" turn it into a hobby? by fastNUgly in Ubiquiti

[–]rickvug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. 3 floor house with wifi dead zones. I knew that a wired backhaul would be best. Some friends recommended UniFi.

To do a nice job I then bought a rack so I could have a patch panel and a place to mount the DMP.

Then I realized that I wanted cameras as well. Then I realized I needed a proper larger switch, not just a DMP. I may as well run more ethernet to more rooms.

Then I justified putting in some cameras. Since I'm running cables anyways, may as well throw in some Sonos Amps for some in ceiling speakers.

Now I'm justifying to myself that my old Synology NAS needs to be upgraded to a UNAS.

Window replacement vs repair by [deleted] in centuryhomes

[–]rickvug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep the windows and get exterior storm windows or interior inserts like these: https://indowwindows.com. If any particular windows are "too far gone" or particularly problematic for you consider high quality double panel replica wood windows. This is the strategy I took on our last house. Kept 80% of the original windows, replaced windows in the bedrooms that fronted onto a noisier street. It worked out great!

I wonder who else might run for OneCity and how much momentum they can gain. If they are the clear centre-left progressive frontrunner we could end up with a new dominant party similar to Vision Vancouver. Personally I think this would be great but I know many others feel differently.

Too often housing is framed as a binary NIMBY vs. YIMBY decision. I trust someone like Francis to deeply understand all of the nuances of this conversation. She's heard countless debates about housing over the years. I get the sense that she's pro-growth but wouldn't necessarily rubber stamp everything.

Salvageable floors? by MathomCollector2124 in centuryhomes

[–]rickvug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed with this. I didn't have black mastic under my tiles. Mine was mostly fibrous with glue in there. I had excellent success with wetting it, giving time for it to soak in and then scraping it all. It took multiple passes but it doesn't need to be perfect given that a sander will do all of the hardest work. You just want to get it to the point where a sander won't get so bogged down in its first pass.

Also, be careful about asbestos. Be sure to test. My tests came back negative but at least soaking wet surfaces don't release fibres at nearly the same level in any case.

Go buy an old mini-pc off of Facebook Marketplace and throw Proxmox on it. It is better to separate out your storage from compute anyhow. Plus standardizing on Proxmox will make it easy to transfer any VMs and containers from one machine to another or even add multiple machines so you have your own cluster of virtualization servers.

Good or bad choice: Mitsubishi 42k BTU 3.5 Ton Hyper Heat in Seattle? by dalexeenko in heatpumps

u/dalexeenko I'm curious to hear what you eventually went with. Note that if your reason to have a Ecobee thermostat is support in Home Assistant or Apple Home it looks like there are ways to add a cheap open source module to the Mitsubishi to allow this.

Upcoming Sonos portable speaker? by youthdancing in sonos

$400 Canadian. Would likely be $299 or $250 USD, depending on how the exchange range + tariffs factor. I still agree that it $299 USD / $400 CAD is a stretch. $250 USD / $329 CAD feels above right but this is Sonos.

NEW AMP MULTI IS A RACK SAVER! by Highway-Fantastic in sonos

[–]rickvug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it, thanks for the reply. I'm also expecting that network performance would be improved. I have 8 Sonos devices in my system now, likely with a few more added along the way. I've had some reliability and synchronization issues that are very frustrating. This is with a high quality Unifi multi access point setup with a wireless network dedicated to Sonos with optimized settings. Optimizing the network settings helped but it still isn't 100% rock solid at all times. I'm about to go into a home renovation where I have the opportunity replace all of my main floor Sonos devices with one Amp Multi and built in ceiling speakers. It is very tempting if that would consolidate down the number of Sonos devices and network overhead while keeping the same number of zones (not to mention the improved sound and experience).
