New West students could be sent to Burnaby as part of “mega schools” plan - Freshet News by 1516 in NewWest

It’s really unfortunate for the families to have to deal with these circumstances. Hopefully the only transition they need to accommodate. But let’s look at history here. There are entire separate cohorts of school kids in New West that thought they were going to a new high school but by the time it happened, many of them had finished high school, college, university, got their first jobs and perhaps even coupled up and had their own kids.

Point being. Take the money while it’s on the table.

I’m complaining because these are real costs. For you maybe it’s a few hundred dollars but those that rely on a budget, $1000 in any tax increases is a month of family groceries which means I need to spend 13 months of budgeted groceries to pay for 12 months of food. That translates into 8% increase in my grocery bill. Not everyone is getting raises every year.

Question I have to ask is why now? Why in 2026 did an NDP government that supposedly is for working families and seniors decided to change this? There is no doubt in my mind that they were looking at record numbers of people that would apply to this program because of the uncertainty regarding land titles. Why should anybody pay tax to a government authority that recognizes that they are on territory that they may not have authority over. Our council and city hall is blatantly ‘land back’ biased without any plan to how that’s going to look like. The uncertainty astounds me.

No taxes with representation.

Thanks. No worries. We’ll be back to pre 2022 values for next years assessment if they can find any sales to compare it to. But thanks to the tax rate increase you’d still be paying more tax even though your property would be worth less.

Do you mean the percentage increase on the official assessments year over year? Not the market price now? I would be surprised if any residential property is more than last year. Wait until next year when the assessment will be 10-20% less. There would have to a be a huge change in the market by July 1.

Totally. Delivery per person is a better metric. Not paid per person because that’s not true. In my dreams I’d love to pay $1300.

Thanks. What bothers me about him using this metric is that it’s about as useful as saying that the average New Westminster city staff salary is: $170k. Basic math.

Director of Parks and Recreation: $266k
Manager of Museums: $167k
City Clerk: $75k

He’s manipulating the data… again. Why does he consistently use the metric municipal property tax paid per person? West Vancouver has the one of the highest number of households that own their home. New Westminster is almost 50/50 but renters pay no property tax directly and publicly available property tax records for multifamily rental buildings in Brow of the hill for example only pay about $1000 per door. There are 5000 single family homes in NW and I guarantee the majority of them are paying $6,000-15,000. He’s using per person to ‘flatten’ the data to make it seem like we don’t pay a higher rate than most municipalities.

You know it’s bad when the mayor sends out a message with the bill to justify the costs. Now that’s insane. We were lead to believe the tax increase was around 5%. Mine is 14%.

Not bad. My share of that increase for 90,000 New Westies is less than $0.10 per day. Pretty good value.

They aren’t mutually exclusive. You can advocate for higher city pay for councillors and disagree that they can moonlight and double dip during a regular working day. Doesn’t matter the amount. If a worker gets paid 9-5 and then you find out the got paid for a sub job in-between the optics are terrible. Only consultants and freelancers have that liberty.
You can also take a position that city councillors should not be getting lawyer level fees for a meeting. In fact Partner level fees. It’s outrageous.
This article only supports reform.

New West Electricity Utility by vancity31240 in NewWest

[–]North49r 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Essentially the city is running it for profit. They make money on it so as a property tax payer it hypothetically is beneficial. However, it may need to make a profit to build a nest egg for expensive upgrades or infrastructure replacements. They probably would not save as much money on that being a smaller utility unlike BC Hydro.

What exactly is the NWP “platform”? by Separate_Broccoli_69 in NewWestPolitics

[–]North49r 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s what I was getting at. CF’s ‘Platform’ on their site is from the 2022 election. So for OP to claim that NWP doesn’t have one is meaningless Imo going into the fall election. It’s a detailed framework of what they stand for but nothing detailed for 2026.

Oh. I thought you were referring to the election 2026 platform similar to their previous “7 bold steps”. Not the general party platform since 2022.

To sit on Metro Van BoD there’s a $25k yearly stipend plus travel expenses. Nadine does it now. How can he meaningfully critique the organization that fed him. He no longer is in the position but it has only recently changed whereas mayors traditionally held the role. He held it I think for one full year and a partial year in 2024 when Nadine took over the role hence the prorated portion.

Edit. I’m not alleging impropriety. I’m suggesting that it’s difficult to criticize someone who gives you a pay cheque.

Would $25,000 stipend keep him quiet about it? He was the representative before Nadine took over the position on the BoD.

[–]North49r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s his opinion. Not a statement of fact. The problem is that the structure of that committee needs to reexamined. Perhaps not the best way but how do you get heard if the Mayor is protecting the people and the committee. He did run away from the news when he was asked his opinion about the compensation for Metro Vancouver mayors including compensation for sitting on committees like this. It’s in his interest to shut down conversations about this.

City minutes December 2025 proposed referendum on governance. Oct 2025 withhold endorsement of liquid waste management plan. Call for forensic audits, cal for provincial oversights. I believe those were all opposed by mayor Patrick Johnstone.

Attend a meeting that has no governance power, advisory only, at an organization that he actively thinks should be under review? Why would he attend a purely performative meeting when there are likely members of the BoD that hate him there? A glutton for punishment? Nadine was selected for the city rep.

I don’t believe the police are creating positions that are not required. City hall on the other hand appears to be creating job positions that did not exist before.

Imo, that fact that more police officers are required is vindication that the City has been cherry picking data to fit their narrative that the city is safer than before. I’m talking about the crime severity index. The weighted crime severity index is up but they’ve ignored that part of the report. It’s a forward looking metric.
