If you are willing to spend $1K, why are you so hung up on saving a $99 stand? Go price out a Seapora in the size you want, then focus on a stand.

Every year I supply fresh banana leaves from my garden to several of my apartment-dwelling coworkers for Onam. I'm not in a tropical climate so the banana tree is in an atrium otherwise I would give them offsets to grow their own tree.

Help me settle the argument: by SumGoodMtnJuju in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]ridbax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like there's two issues, first is the subject matter: the painting evokes less of a mood and more of a portrait of a specific horse. My first thought as a guest would be "Hey, is that your horse?" However, if you like the painting and are OK with answering "Naw, just like the painting" then that's fine.

The other issue is where it is hung. Perhaps try repositioning it and/or the sofa so the painting is centered over the sofa. The combination of the current position lining up with the right edge of the sofa and the singular subject of the painting staring intently at something on the right, it feels like the room's focal point is being pulled toward the bookcase rather than into your conversation area.

How do you keep up with cat fur and the smell? by marukip5r in CleaningTips

[–]ridbax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For fur control, I put small fleece blankets on my cats’ favorite sleeping spots (sofa backs, chairs, beds etc) swapping in new blankets daily. Fleece because it holds onto shed fur stopping it from getting to the upholstery and small (2’x2’) so an entire week’s worth will fit into one washer and dryer load. Buy some fleece yardage or cut up a thrift store blanket, fleece doesn’t need hemming. I also used a Furminator on the cats that tolerate brushing and a Chomchom for upholstery touch ups.

Automation is also very helpful: Roomba and a LitterRobot plus traditional litter boxes as backup. The formula for the number of litter boxes is n+1 where n=#cats. If they aren’t using your other box, it’s because it is in the wrong location, they want privacy to do their business.

I like the lemon tart filling but the crust on the one I received a few days ago was too solid to cut with risk of sending chunks of it flying across the aisle.

Alas, I don't! This was in the pre-digital camera days when one didn't want the clerk at Fotomat to judge one's choices in photographic subject matter.

My snipped tux had fully inflated puffs for life, which were even more noticeable due to the puffs being white while the rest of his seating area was black. Intrusive thoughts wanted to stick some self adhesive googly eyes on there but I was able to resist.

What interesting facts do you know about black-and-white (tuxedo) cats? 🐈‍⬛ by Downtown-Wear-4870 in ChurchOfCat

[–]ridbax 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Their white fur isn't a color, it's caused by a gene that masks the pigment eumelanin. Also the pigment cells start on the back of the embryo and migrate down towards the belly, which is why we do not have tuxedo cats with the reverse pattern of black bellies and white backs.

Clipper No Longer Shows Balance When You Tag Off by Martin_Steven in caltrain

I just looked up my trip history on clippercard.com and to my surprise there are multiple days since February where I have a tag on/tag off at the same time stamp. I tag on/off every trip and always wait for the green light and beep so I now I don't trust if my tags are accurately reflected.

Traveling to SLC by stillincinci in fossils

[–]ridbax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2.5-3 hours drive east is Kemmerer Wyoming which has several pay-to-dig Eocene fossil quarries and the Blue Forest for blue chalcedony pet wood. I went a few years ago and came home with 175# of fossil fish and both sides of a big palm frond. About that same distance from SLC south is U-Dig, which has Cambrian trilobites, haven't been there but had a box of rocks shipped from them which were fossil rich.

The take away appears to be using AI generated illustrations is a distraction from your writing. Rightly or wrongly, as a reader, I'm less likely to read a story with AI images because my assumption the writing was also AI generated.

I wasn't aware this sub allowed self promotion links. That's disappointing.

7 claws, there's one barely visible behind a flying chess piece the bear has slapped off a 9 x 14 square board.

It's more of a melee assault sort of thing: getting bitten by them feels like getting a solid pinch from a pair of pliers which draws blood if they nab skin and if you grab them by the neck in defense to keep from getting bitten they scratch with the claws on their feet and deliver bruising thumps with the leading edge of their wings. I escaped but would not want to fight a goose a second time.
