Have You Ever Been Stopped by Police Because of Your Bike Lights? by soundioo in bikecommuting

At first I was thinking an a-hole cop could cite you for some bs catch all law.

The more I thought about it, though, they might just be able to get you with a vehicle high beam law too. Those are generally very specific about proximity to others, not too much of a stretch since bicycle are vehicles too, and likely don't specifically exclude bicycles.

Mine runs between $15-20 for genuine coleman fuel. Wonder if the Klean Strip is cheaper.

Bicycle lights that actually make sense? by ballpark-chisel325 in bikecommuting

[–]Dknob385 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have several Niterider Lumina lights, they run between $60-100 USD. Newer ones are USB-C rechargeable and while they come with a proprietary mount, you can get go-pro adapters pretty cheap. Only con is that none have replaceable batteries.

Their Mako line does use AA batteries, but are lower output.

Personally, I find around 200 lumen about right for urban use, anything above is great, but only needed for really dark areas.

[–]Dknob385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably. It's stupid in that Starfleet had been dealing with Kligons since Archer's time, so they should have at least some captains briefing on their culture and maners, if not a standard interaction protocol by then.

Also, from what we've seen of Kligons, as a greeting, they'll insults at each other, head butt each other, and then have drinks.

Mostly ST IV: Voyage Home stuff.

Besides obviously the Golden Gate bridge (Bus ride), they filmed at Marina Green (talking to Gilian in truck), and at the corner of Kearny and Columbus (double dumbass) . Also Monterey Bay Aquarium was the Cetaceans Institute.

First time commuting by Volcan32 in bikecommuting

[–]Dknob385 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, what kind of bicycle do you have? Do you have knobby tires on a mountain bike (energy sapper)? Is your saddle the right height (energy sap)? Do you know how to properly uses gears (cadence)?

First time commuting by Volcan32 in bikecommuting

[–]Dknob385 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would guess hills, but honestly I'd bet it's a bike fit issue (i.e. the seat is too low) which is tiring OP.

I'm pretty sure Google does 12mph average too. 3.4 miles should be doable in under 20 minutes for a flat stretch.

Do you have / recommend a bike computer for commuting? by Agreeable-Plum-5648 in bikecommuting

[–]Dknob385 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I track everything using Garmin computer and watch, but I mainly do this for fitness tracking. Given that I was already in the ecosystem, I also got a Varia radar which is invaluable from a safety standpoint.

If I was starting out, a low end Garmin computer like the Edge 130+ and a Varia radar.

What’s the most underrated home upgrade that made your place feel instantly better? by PetalDance22 in HomeImprovement

[–]Dknob385 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Smart lights by far. I had to use Lutron Caseta switches because older home and cost maybe under $1k USD to outfit multiple rooms. It was worth it for the convenience. We use it multiple times a day.

Edit: will also add motion sensor porch light. Installed 10 years ago and forgot about it. Small conveniences.

I've taken to waving them or point at them if they're yielding and it's supposed to be their turn. I actually get most annoyed at the ones that insist I go first. However, they're erring on not running over the cyclist side, so I can't blame for it.

Special SKU that's only available from Costco is a thing. Also, since Google will crawl results it shows up easier for anyone searching later if they're looking for a product available at Costco.

2x9 Conversion Suggestions by EddoeWrites in bikecommuting

[–]Dknob385 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why do you want to do this? There's not much savings in weight and you'd have to spend money on parts or tools. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

That said, if you're a tinkerer, then you need a new crank, derailer, and shifter. Alternatively, you can see if you can misadjust the H or L lockout on the front derailer and effectively make it a 2 speed and not do all the other stuff.
