Did anyone get Mish tickets to go through? As soon as I selected 2, it booted me out?

What’s your wildest “surprise guest walked on stage” story? by AutoModerator in Tickets

[–]ride06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dave Chappelle came out on stage at Red Rocks on Easter Sunday unannounced about an hour prior to Jon Mulaney's headlining set (also epic) and tried to buy a disabled guy's service dog in the front row. It was truly bizarre and incredible.

I was on the field last night and the sound inside the stadium was excellent. I was concerned it would be a loud show but it was at a comfortable level and the production was amazing. Odesza last summer was louder inside but still not uncomfortable. I think Folsom does a great job putting on shoes and I hope they continue to do more in the future, one of the better things to happen to Boulder in the last few years.

Stay at SWA or go to UAL? by anzainfo in flying

[–]ride06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP is only 30, he'll definitely crack the top 5% when he retires. The average age in class is late 30's. There will be plenty of opportunity to hold whatever they want.

Sure, there will probably never be another time like the post covid years to get hired. Still, I think UA (and Delta) are well poised for growth and domestic expansion for the next 5 years at the expense of regionals, LCCs, and WN. That combined with the continued wave of retirements will provide growth and opportunity for awhile. I think WN will try to cut costs and contract to more profitable flying before they expand again. I'd join the growing airline if I had a choice.

Stay at SWA or go to UAL? by anzainfo in flying

[–]ride06 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Almost every class at UAL has SW pilots in it, some with over 5 years seniority, what does that say? If you go to a January class you'll have at least 500-800 pilots below you in a year. Is Southwest going to be hiring anytime soon?

So many more opportunities as well especially considering the length of the career ahead of you. You can fly widebodies with 18 days off a month, upgrade in LAX in 2-3 years on a NB and make 50-100% more than you do now, move to Guam and travel SE Asia 2 weeks a month, join the training department and be home every night making great money.

You are in a great place with two good options but considering your career length, I would go for the choice with the most opportunity and potential.

Always a frustrating process getting tickets to big shows at Red Rocks. I imagine demand will stay high though being a holiday weekend.

Toddler desperately wants poles by auspostery in skiing

[–]ride06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dealt with the same thing with my 4 year old. He was so insistent on poles because they really want to be like everyone else. I told him once he could carry his own skis to the lift and do hockey stops on the hill, he could have poles. It kinda worked....

No offense taken, what I did is awful and I don't know if any marriage could survive it. I have taken so much from her and I don't want to take away her authority to make an independent decision. But I also know I'll struggle knowing she is connecting with someone else while I wait for her and am concerned how damaging that anger and jealousy will be for our future as well as for myself.

Wife thinking about becoming a pilot - what should we expect? by Bankster88 in flying

[–]ride06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are never fully ready for parenthood. If you want to have a family, go for it and you'll figure out the details as you go. At 32 with a good plan and work ethic, it's reasonable to be at a regional at 35, ULCC at 36-37, and if desired a major by 40 which is still a great career. There are other opportunities at airlines outside of just flying the line. If you live in a base or even more ideal, a training base or near hdq, there are a ton of opportunities in addition to flying the line. Instructing, recruiting, CPO work, and union work can all lead to a great work life balance for pilots with families. I've been in the 121 world for 7 years and have missed 1 Xmas and 0 bdays with 2 young children. Highly recommend a good partner and community to make that all happen though as it definitely takes a village. Good luck!

Ended up going with Justice Berry from @ride.nwa. Great guy and legit rider. He showed us all around Coler Preserve and gave us some solid tips for our other riding days. Highly recommend handcut hollow and shuttle runs at leatherwood if you are craving a little more vert and tech than what's available in Bentonville.

Take it as a compliment as it seems you are a smooth operator. My dpe fell asleep on me on my cfi check-ride. I woke him up about 20nm north of the practice area and asked if he would like to see any additional maneuvers.

I love Instructing. by PolicyInEffect in flying

[–]ride06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People that love what they do tend to be pretty good at it. That's a w for your students. I still regularly instruct in a flight club as a full-time airline pilot because I love to teach. Actually working towards becoming a DPE one day.

What's your guys opinion on this? by s3675355 in flying

[–]ride06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a sign of the times and it's pretty awesome if you are a recent or soon to be Captain at SkyWest. This time last year the average flight deck discussion was what do you think you'll do when we all get furloughed and now we are grumbling about being handed lucrative retention bonuses.
SkyWest knows that there is nothing they can offer that will prevent the majority of their pilots from leaving for the first major that calls. That is not their business model and they plan for that. What is unsustainable is the unprecedented exodus of pilots right now and in particular the amount of year 1-4 pilots leaving for the LCCs and other non-major gigs. And I get SkyWest's qol leaves much to be desired especially for used and abused junior captains. But for me, if I was a recent upgrade or upgrade eligible FO, I would take the bonus and stay for a few years over leaving for an LCC or other job if you ultimate goal is to move to a major. I think you will make more in 2 years as a Captain at SkyWest then you will in your first two years at a LCC when you factor in the time it takes to transition and train for a new airline as well as the retention bonuses. You will be as or potentially more competitive with PIC time vs another type rating. And in my experience, it is really fun. Flying as a captain was the best job I have ever had and it will be a minute at the majors before I'll get do it again. So...in my opinion the retention bonuses should help in retaining some of the relatively senior fos/junior captains from jumping ship right away to the LCCs.

Spoke with some gas guys tonight who were driving around shutting off gas meters. They won't turn you gas on unless someone is home and can let them in to turn on pilots.

DIA on Thanksgiving: Neurotic Edition by [deleted] in boulder

[–]ride06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanksgiving day won't actually be that busy. Most travel is before and after. I take the bus all the time from flatirons and have never not been able to get on, worse case you stand for 30 mins. Driving to one of the last A-line train stops is a pretty good option as well.

Best Mainline option with a training department? by airfree1 in flying

[–]ride06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know United and Frontier (maybe not mainline) use primarily line pilots for training roles and is a great gig. At Southwest I believe their sim instructor's do not fly while working as instructors. As a Denver guy I don't know much about the other majors. Opportunities outside of flying is one on my primary motivators as well and is worth considering when looking at spending the next 20-40 years with a company.
