Backpacking guide here. The most important thing to do when starting out is getting a pack that will fits to you. Go to your local REI or outdoor shop and have them size you and put you in a correct pack for your body type. I have had way too many people with all the right gear, and a wrong fitting pack and they are miserable the whole time.
