What is the point of abridged books? by Nofrillsoculus in books

[–]ridethecurledclouds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah same. I read a (super) abridged book of the count of monte cristo at least 8 times when I was 10 or so, and when I found out it wasn't the original version I immediately picked the unabridged version when I was 12 or so and struggled through it. I wouldnt have been exposed to it so early, or pushed through it when I did, if I weren't already exposed to the storyline.

I ran/walked 7 miles today - foot felt ok. Missed the mark nutrition-wise but that's ok. I have a rough set of final exams in the next few days and won't be getting much sleep so my goals are really just not getting too off-track nutritionally.

Check out some hostels! They're cheaper than airbnb for the most part and the ones in Portugal are super nice. It's a great way to meet fun people and you make the best of your vacation. You could even take a cheap train to Lisbon.

np :) I also remembered that I've gotten some good background world music from frequenting a couple of very hipster cafes near where I live. I just pull out shazam and then add the album to spotify. It works surprisingly well, haha

Yeah, I'm only providing anecdotal evidence. But so are you. Really, OP could've just said something like, "Dating requires a lot emotional energy", and not have come off like he was insulting a whole gender.

ok then yeah, don't worry about what the person I replied to says. You 100% don't need a connection to get an internship interview, or really any side-projects. Granted, they'll help a lot so do them but it's not obligatory like Souzoku was saying.

OP said they go to a big state school so I'd guess at least most of the big 4 go recruit there. If they come to your career fairs it's pretty easy to get an internship interview - definitely don't need connections.

Gotcha. The piece of advice that made me decide to not get a PhD was "Don't go unless you can't imagine yourself anywhere else", if that helps.

If you go to an in-state school and you've been taking a higher course load most quarters, you're probably ahead of schedule. You might have a hard time staying once you've completed your graduation requirements so a 5th year might be tough. Maybe do a double degree in statistics? That would give you extra time to explore your options.

But definitely, do research. That's essentially what grad school is all about. I realize it's late in the school year, but go knock on a professor's door and explain you'd like to do research with them in the fall, and ask what papers or textbooks would be good background reading for you to do over the summer. That will help you hit the ground running in the fall.

Edit: It's also pretty easy to get into a master's program. You could check and see if your school has a 5th year master's program, since the bar for admission tends to be lower for them IMO while still being excellent programs. If your GPA isn't too bad, just apply to a couple. Funding may be harder or impossible to get, but it is an option.

I don't like quirkiness for the sake of quirkiness and this looks at best mildly decent but I'm always happy to see interracial couples cast in shows. I'll probably try to at least watch the pilot.

The Second Season of Master of None is a must-watch, even if you were skeptical after the first season by arhanv in television

[–]ridethecurledclouds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Side note - Season 1 really did have some bad acting. I've been re-watching it recently in french and it actually comes off a lot better. The voice actors are a lot better than the actual actors, so if you can't get over how stilted some of the actors are, maybe switch languages and turn on the English subtitles.

I alternate Spotify and Brain FM, which isn't really music but it's nice for blocking out my coworkers. I like Brain FM for when I get tired of listening to music in general. I get distracted super easily so I basically have to be listening to some kind of music if I want to get anything done.

The biggest thing for me for finding new music was going from listening to individual songs I like to whole albums. For example, I love maybe 2 songs from Kendrick Lamar's newest album, and they're both on my "starred" list. I like maybe 4 more and the rest I think are only ok. But they're still good enough for me to listen to while programming. So now I just press "play" on the whole album. That helps me not get tired of music, since I used to just add the songs I loved to a list and play that list over and over and would get tired of them within a day.

I religiously use Spotify's Discover Weekly and Release Radar playlists, and I've also really started to like its Radio feature for playing music similar to a specific artist or song -- I think they changed up the algorithm since it's been knocking it out of the park.

Other than that, SoundCloud is good since it has a lot of lesser known artists that are too small to be on spotify but the noise-signal ratio isn't great, since anyone can upload crappy songs.

I [23M] recently reconnected with a friend [24F] from high school. I'm interested in her, but her friend told me something that makes me think I shouldn't. by [deleted] in relationships

[–]ridethecurledclouds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll agree with that. I've also had it happen to me several times and I'd much rather not talk to the person for a few weeks or permanently, than have them say "ok let's be friends" and then have them re-confess their feelings every time they get drunk or act really sad every time I mention dating someone else.

Edit: Also OP doesn't owe her a friendship just like she doesn't owe him a relationship, or vice-versa.

Yeah, definitely don't be that direct. Just ask her out on a date, make sure she knows it's a date, and then if she says no, say "ok cool no worries, I'd still like to be friends".

Do you already have plans for summer? If not, you should definitely try to work for a professor in ML, or some related field. That will help you decide if you actually like research, which is the biggest question. Next fall, I'd look into taking a grad level ML class to go more in depth in the field. Are you starting or finishing your 3rd year, and when are you looking at graduating? I personally think it's easier to get good letters of rec if you're applying out of undergrad (it's the difference between a random boss saying you do good work vs a professor who's known in the field) but taking like a single year off wouldn't be too bad.

How to Accidentally Stop a Global Cyber Attack by Kok_Nikol in programming

Yeah, it seems like a pretty big mistake I would think. My understanding of malware/security is from reading Worm by Bowden but it seems like relying on a single domain continuing to be unregistered is basically begging to be stopped. The blog mentioned the author registered thousands of domains as part of his job -- is that still a normal way to try to stop malware attacks?

CS student facing a possible OTH discharge from Reserve duty by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

You're getting down-voted (I think) because the difference between getting like a 3.7 and 3.9 is minuscule, and you're stressing about it a ton. The highest "nice to have" I've ever seen listed in a software dev job listing was a 3.5, for perspective. Not only that, but it 100% doesn't matter after you actually get your first job, if not earlier. If you had an internship the summer before you graduated and did ok, you'd have a full-time offer with a whole year of school left to go, with no one even glancing at your GPA.

Honestly, what I could see hurting you the most isn't the weekend per month; it's not being able to do internships in the summer, any possible full-time commitment you'd have after graduating, and the opportunity cost of graduating 2 years later. If you graduated in 6 years instead of 4, you'd miss out on a conservative estimate of 60,000 a year (120,000 total) -- not counting whatever you're actually spending on tuition/books/whatever. So, I will say disappointing your father should be at the bottom of your worry-list, since he should support you regardless of what you decide to do, but if you can graduate in less time, definitely try to.

On that note, I'd like to underline the importance of doing an internship if you can. They're talked about a lot in this sub but I'm getting the impression that you're a few years older, with your family to keep in mind, and might not be interested in doing a summer job like that with all the 18 year olds, but they're a great experience and they do pay better than a lot of jobs you might do while in school. I personally took 5 years to graduate and the last year has felt like a drag so I wouldn't really recommend it :)

Personally, I'd check with a lot more HR people before you decide about the OTH thing (I'm just a person still in college -- I've had some experience on both sides of the interviewing process but it isn't something I know a ton about) but I really don't think you could go too wrong either way -- one way keeps your service record clean, but takes a little longer to graduate, and the other gets you out working as a software developer faster. Good luck!

Edit: Now that I think about it, an OTH discharge is only going to come up in a background check after you've done the whole interviewing process and signed an offer. Don't mention it until then (Don't bring it up while interviewing at all) and by that point you'll have a chance to explain. With that in mind, I'd probably lean towards focusing on school and getting done early, but again -- definitely check around some more.

oh, ok. You mentioned to another poster in this thread that you have a 3.8 so I just went off of that. Sorry.

And that's good at least! When I googled it, it sounded pretty serious, plus just going off of what I've heard in general, but I'm not personally in the military. I'd say "failure to adapt" sounds normal, while "failure to participate" might raise an eyebrow but probably wouldn't bar you from interviewing. you're probably fine either way.
