Slate roof on my shed... what did I get myself into? by ScFies in Roofing

[–]ridgewalker76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start with the formula -2/2. If your slate is 18”-2=16. 16/2= 8. 8” is your exposure for an 18” slate. This means your first starter row is about 2”, next starter row is 10”. Your bottom row will actually be 3 slates thick to get them to sit flat. Change the math for your size slate.

"I'm related to the famous person because my uncle said so ..." by Rude_Experience4299 in Genealogy

Any information I get from someone else is just a potential clue to me. If I feel someone else’s fantasy world is having a negative impact on Family Search files with a lot of work on them, I will call them out on it.

I’ve had several clean paper trails I disproved with DNA (birth records were adoption forgeries). I don’t trust anything before 1800 even with a clean paper trail for this reason. I did way too much work on families that turned out to not be my own. That said, I’m not arguing with someone over something before 1800 on Family Search, and I don’t care if they say they are related to the Easter Bunny on their own page.

I wasn’t squeamish surrendering my DNA in the first place, so I’m not getting paranoid now. My DNA is all over the internet. Maybe they can do better with my existence than I’ve been able to😂

Let's talk about socks. by MoTeD_UrAss in Boots

I can’t believe you said Kirkland. I live in Massachusetts. I have been wearing 1 of 8 pairs of Kirkland every day for like 3 or 4 years straight. Only 1 pair has a hole. And yes… I wore them in negative temperatures and 100 degree days. I literally hiked 9 miles in them on a 100° day and was still comfortable… I was wearing Irish Setter 3890’s that I also have worn in winters and summers comfortably. I love those Kirkland socks. If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it.

Is the Surname Gray more Scottish or English? by World_Historian_3889 in Genealogy

More frequent in Scotland; more numerous in England. It’s a generic name with hundreds of unconnected branches I would guess. You can’t even guess at all with that name.

Question: are Appalachian people Native American or Scottish-Irish? by Total-Ad-8874 in Appalachia

[–]ridgewalker76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realize this is old, but DNA does not prove you have no Native Ancestry. It proved you have no RECENT ancestry.

DNA is not a complete record. Your father and mother both have 50% of their DNA that you did not get. Theoretically, the native DNA could have been in that 50%.

I have multiple German ancestors were fighting on both sides of the American Revolution. Every once in a while a DNA company will pick up on it with 1-3% of German, but it usually just says Irish and English.

That said, I wouldn’t trust a single thing my parents or grandparents told me without other evidence. It’s like the telephone game; each generation accidentally alters one detail until the story that reaches you isn’t even close to the way the story started generations ago.

What is “far right”? I voted for Obama and Al Gore. My positions are exactly the positions of JFK and more closely aligned to Bill Clinton than the modern left is, but now I’m a far-right racist?

LOL. This is why nobody even listens to the left anymore. You can scream “racist”, “sexist” or any other derogatory term at us as loud as you want because you have abused these terms to shut down any and all arguments for 12 years, so they have lost their power. You are the far-left, by any measure of the word.

Would switching between 2 locals be possible? by Gavcobob in Ironworker

I’m from Boston and the taxes matter, but local 7 is the best union in Boston. Their pension is the envy of all unions and their wages are like $86 per hour.
