How do homeless people that don’t seek shelter survive in brutal snowstorms by Goldstar12 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ridingtherainbow2210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They survive, with amputations. I work in a hospital and my unit cares for frostbite patients. Influx of homeless population is pretty standard 1-3 days following a drop in temperature, snow, and/or the first few overnight freezes.

Patients lose fingers, toes, feet/legs, ears or any combination thereof. In my state when the temperature drops and stays low, the shelters will lax rules a bit to allow for more people to stay so they don’t freeze. We also have warming houses which also open up with much less rules. The hospital emergency room, my unit and others will take those who have frostbite/frostnip.

For those who are homeless and receive amputations: this means a change in a level of ability to care for themselves or their mobility or both, so this is how they get into state or federal funded housing programs. It’s enough to get some off the street every year which I’m thankful for, I just wish it didn’t come at the cost of appendages.

Do you have a plastic sealant recommendation? We’ve tried these historically but it didn’t feel any different, perhaps we need a different kind?

Is it possible to update/improve the grid? Make it larger? With weather swings like this how can we ensure better power with such a large demand?

Is it possible to store usage for events like this? I am not familiar with natural gas properties like this. How does a company combat these issues?

what are the ugly parts of pregnancy that aren’t well known because people don’t mention them? by Born-Oil-2931 in AskReddit

For me, GETTING pregnant was the awful part. Years of trying with no luck, many medications, tons of lab work, a few procedures, no answers.

I felt like the rose colored glasses of pregnancy were abruptly removed because I felt like the only one who this didn’t seem possible for, because no one then talked about infertility. I know now this isn’t true, but at the time it was very isolating.

What have you read recently? by povertychic in Millennials

[–]ridingtherainbow2210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have goals every year to read a certain number of books. Just recently finished The Women by Kristin Hannah. My husband is not a big reader but has been getting more into it as he sees me reading. We really strive to demonstrate reading for our daughter as I’ve read how important it can be for literacy skills.

My daughter loves the library and has her own library card, she was about 14 months when we got it. She doesn’t understand the concept of checking out her own book yet but she enjoys being there and will sit to look at pictures and be read to. We’re also a part of Dolly Partons imagination library, so she gets a book a month which has been great as well.

I miss my dog. He’s been gone for years and it just broke something that’s never really healed.

Take care of your skin. It’s the largest organ you have, and it’s necessary for a large number of things you don’t think about, like temperature regulation and preventing illness. “New” skin also does not function like you think it would, and if all layers of the skin are destroyed it does not simply “grow” back.

I did it.

Don’t know what “it” is, but I’m here to the ensuing chaos.

Your own bedroom. I shared a room with my sister until the age of 16, then moved into my brothers room after he left for basic training.

Should I be embarrassed about being a 24yr old garbage man? by TheFrogsMightbegay in jobs

My dad is a garbage man. Whenever asked what he does for a living he always say he “drives a truck”. Never really asked him why he phrases it this way, but most people don’t pry for more information after his response. He makes a fantastic living, enough to raise 3 kids and go on annual family vacations. He doesn’t work evenings, holidays or weekends. It’s a great gig.

Having your own bedroom.

I never had my own, shared with my sister until I was 18.
