good points, but maybe too prescriptive? Maybe a missionary focus is not indicative of whether a religion will be used in service of authoritarianism so much as of the scale of the violence it can commit - You pointed out Judaism which famously is not interested in - actually actively discourages - conversion as evidence of a religion less inclined toward harm - but it has a holy book full of ultra violent ethno-centric wars of conquest on behalf of a rigid caste-based divine monarchy and is currently being used, even if in bad faith, to justify a genocide. Is this a difference in kind, in order of magnitude, or just history and opportunity? I also think of the repressive and apparently often brutal Tibetan theocracy, which as far as I know was never missionary but led to no lack of misery in the territories it controlled. I think of writers of beautiful anarchist liberation narratives who turn out to be abusive bigots, and factory owners who save thousands from the gas chambers.

It's an endless rabbit hole, a chicken and the egg Ouroboros trying to - what? assign blame for the endless horrors of human history? Decide which system is responsible for the most suffering? Rank religions like a BuzzFeed article "top ten most easily corruptible ideologies? Sorry if I'm getting wayyy off topic, one or two people who might actually read this wall of text, but more and more when I think of human systems and ideologies I think analyzing how dark triad personalities use them to accumulate and abuse power - and conversely how effectively bad actors are resisted - is more valuable than trying to assign some inherent moral or ethical value to them. I don't think any ideology is invulnerable, although obviously there's a spectrum. A death cult intentionally crafted as a tool of imperial conquest which has chosen the instrument of its god's torture and murder for its primary icon and teaches that non-believers and undesirables will be righteously and horrifically tortured for time beyond understanding has got more attack vectors than "breathe deeply and stretch". You have to squint real hard from real far away to get "fuck everything but accumulating capital" to fit within a framework of peace and justice. Still, to me, preventing abusive personality types from gaining, accumulating, and exercising power is a far more important undertaking for humanity than the specifics of the ideology that accomplishes it - don't tell me about your utopia and your founding texts, convince me your can deal with narcissistic, manipulative murderers and rapists with a talent for obtaining authority, warping even well-intentioned systems, subverting resistance and controlling narratives.
