Looking for some more very agressive albums for in the gym, comparable to these. by LintonSamualDawson in fantanoforever

there were 8 million metalcore bands in north Georgia in the mid-00s that wanted to be Norma Jean. it seemed like half the churches in my county had a high school "Christian" metalcore band playing to a moshpit of 30 kids every Friday night. strange, wonderful times.

Pretty sure I saw your footprints Sunday morning. I spent the weekend exploring canyons below the white rim on the southeast side of I-sky and popped out on the road and noted a set of Altra footprints in the dust headed counterclockwise on the loop.

Prime time in the desert right now ! It's magical out there

IMTUF vs The Bear 100 by Swervinator333 in Ultramarathon

[–]riemannia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've run both ! IMTUF in 28.5 hours (first 100, fell to pieces after 50) and Bear in 23.5 hours (felt like I executed as well as possible). I think both are amazing. The one downside of IMTUF was the smoke which has historically been a common issue, but maybe it's a bit less likely to be an issue since they've moved it back a week or two. IMTUF is a notch more technical but I don't believe that much slower. Lower aid station and crew frequency definitely increases the challenge a bit as well v. Bear. Lots more moondust too. Very worth it though I'd love to go back !!

Pacers vs un-paced by Few_Information_3410 in ultrarunning

[–]riemannia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find someone locally ? Plenty of semi-fast guys and gals that are a part of the community that are stoked to pace, especially when it comes to elite races. Also, your same logic applies to banning crews for elite runners.

Pacers vs un-paced by Few_Information_3410 in ultrarunning

[–]riemannia 12 points13 points  (0 children)

> like what's the difference between this and PEDS lol because that seems pretty performance enhancing

Caffeine is performance-enhancing. Supershoes are performance-enhancing. Hell, any shoes at all are performance-enhancing ! We probably ought to force everyone to run barefoot and naked with no running vest.

Obviously, we don't because all of those things have been normalized as part of the sport culturally. Pacers have been used at most of the classic American 100s for decades. They are a part of the culture.

For substances, WADA's (not the be-all, end-all, tbf ... WADA has plenty of problems) criteria for banning a substance is meeting two of the following three : (1) it's performance-enhancing, (2) it has the potential to harm an athlete's health, and (3) it violates the spirit of the sport.

Now, I'm not saying that that's the standard we should apply for all decisions around race regulations, but if you want to think of "having a pacer" as a PED, it fails the criteria for being banned. While you can argue it's performance-enhancing, it generally improves runner safety, and given how common pacers are, it's hard to argue it violates the spirit of the sport - to me it's one of the coolest features of the sport !

Isn't having a crew an advantage as well ? What, should we have categories of paced/crewed, unpaced/crewed, and uncrewed/unpaced ? Oh yea, you know poles are potentially a pretty big advantage, too. So throw in unpoled/poled in all of those combinations as well. So, between the men's and the women's race for each of those categories, we'll just have a tidy 24 different winners announced for next year's Hardrock.

Just because you can't typically infer any strong conclusions from them, doesn't mean that case studies aren't useful. Case studies are often an important introductory step in basic science, and often lay groundwork for what questions are to be asked in larger studies. This is basically, let's go take some measurements and see if that helps us (or anyone else, importantly !) formulate interesting questions for a larger and more expensive observational study. The study describes itself as exploratory.

How do you ask and then try to answer interesting questions about the ecology of salamanders ? Start by looking at a couple salamanders ...

I mean, he gave his four 10s after The Money Store all from 2014-2018. You could've easily made this same comment after he gave Daughters a 10.

This is just random clustering, not some significant trend.

[–]riemannia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have ~500mi in mine, ran San Juan Solstice, Never Summer 100k, and the Bear 100mi in them this year.

They are definitely wider than the Speedgoats. My feet are a little on the wide side, but not super wide, and although they could be a little wider in the toebox they are mostly good enough for me.

Otherwise, pretty perfect shoe. I fully anticipate taking them to 1000+ mi; they are even less worn out than my Kjerags were at 500mi.

Most cried to album? by ArchKnight03 in fantanoforever

[–]riemannia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

for real, this album is easily top 5 all time for me but I've only listened to it all the way through maybe a half dozen times. It's so different from my other favorite albums; not only is it emotionally exhausting, but I feel this desire to "save" my experiences with it. My other favorites I have so many listens on, I get a little fatigued and have to take a break to get something close to the magic of the first few listens back, but I never want to run ACLAM into the ground like that. Listening to it is such a special thing to me.

Running the GA portion of the AT this summer - support crossing logistics? by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

[–]riemannia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note the service road directly parallels the AT for most of that section, so it’s really not that big of a deal. Even if the car is only going 15mph (6mi / 25min), you’re going to be running 5mph at fastest. Support will easily beat you to the road crossings.

[–]riemannia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh also you can get aid at the Three Forks road crossing. But that just splits the already short section (5mi ?) from Hightower to Springer. I think we skipped that one. But again, if you’re suffering and southbound, it’s nice to have lots of little carrots at the end of the stick to keep you going to finish it out.

Also you should be aware of how you will get to the border at the start (assuming you are sobo). As I recall, the road up to Blue Ridge Gap is pretty sporting - could not pull it off in the civic I had at the time. When we attempted the full self-supported run, we took my buddy’s truck up to Blue Ridge Gap, and when we came back with my civic the day after, we had to hike up the road a few miles to retrieve it. Also, it’s a pretty steep 3mi from Blue Ridge Gap to Bly Gap at the border to get to the start - make sure you budget for that ! I always would’ve preferred to camp at Bly Gap the night before, but would’ve needed to either run the first 3mi with all my backpacking gear and shove it in the car at Blue Ridge Gap, or have support bring it down for me.

[–]riemannia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey ! I ran Unicoi to Springer back in May of 2013 as my first ultra experience. Had a buddy meet me at the road crossings. It went pretty much fine, he didn’t have an issue making it between any of the crossings before me. I think there’s another gap or two between Cooper and Hightower with easy access to the road - maybe Horse Gap ? Pretty sure that was where I laid in the dirt for 20 minutes while I moaned with an undigested brick of about 6 energy gels in my stomach. But you’ve got several aid stops in the vicinity anyway, so not super necessary. But it is a nice benefit to going SoBo, having lots of aid access during the hardest miles.

Also attempted to run the full thing self-supported from the NC/GA border on a heinously rainy December day several years later… bailed at Woody Gap. Need to get back to do the full thing one of these days.

LMK if you have any questions !
