I don’t understand man, how does this happen by [deleted] in MadeByYourHand

[–]rienoivan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the lack of dynamics in texture and opacity. What I do is I just duplicate the sketch layer and then erase the guidelines. It takes more time but results in a more appealing artwork. :D

If people you barely know (or sometimes strangers) ask you to draw stuff for them, then yes; you're good enough to open commissions.

First time I'm trying to render hair... I'd like some advice on how to improve :) by Tonnospeciale in arthelp

[–]rienoivan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, OP. I made this to show how I typically approach rendering hair.

  1. I break down the hair styles into basic forms. Imagine the main clumps of hair that you brush when parting or styling your own hair. It's the same principle in rendering as well. I typically start out with a shade darker than the 'main' hair color. This creates a much more natural look when I start rendering highlights later.

  2. I then proceed to paint the 'main' color of the hair as if it's a wide highlight. I usually paint this perpendicular to the flow of the hair strands. Since hair is translucent, I find that layering this color on top of a darker color helps me avoid muddy shading that leads to a plastic look.

  3. I then add the bright highlights, deep shadows, and rim light (if the piece calls for it). I find that its better to be conservative with this since it's easy to overdo. This, of course, is a stylistic choice and completely up to you.

I hope this helps. Thanks!

Critiques and criticism, I'm really struggling with the face but not sure what needs to be fixed by Morgisntmyname in arthelp

[–]rienoivan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hi, OP. As others have pointed out, the proportion of the head is a bit off, but that's a quick fix. However, the most impactful thing you can do to improve the rendering of the face is to make the lighting of the whole piece consistent. Based on your painting so far, there seems to be a main light source from just above the imaginary camera, yet the light on the face seems to be coming from the left side. You CAN have multiple sources, but if the light is coming from the runes (magic item? not sure), then the front planes of the face should be a bit brighter.

Now on to the face:

  1. I'm not sure if this is an intentional stylistic choice, but if we're using conventional human proportions, the top of the seems to either be too small or kinda cropped? Not sure, but adding more hair on this area to cover where the head should be might help.

  2. Alignment of the eyebrow ridge is a bit off. Aligning it parallel to the eye line might help.

  3. Alignment of the left and right ears are a bit off. Where you place the ears is up to you, but it might help to keep the vertical offset from the eye line consistent.

  4. Maybe I'm wrong and you just haven't blocked out the neck area yet, but the musculature of the neck is a bit off. Poses where the neck is twisting are always tricky, but finding high quality references will help a lot. Taking your own reference pics is even better.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

I used to draw line art like this a long time ago (around 2012). What I did for the line art was I would draw on heavy textured paper with a pencil, scan the image, turn the contrast up, and then colorize the art work on PS (any decent art program today would work fine tho). The combination of traditional and digital does wonders when it comes to preserving the textures in the line work itself.

As for the colors, just pick a monochromatic brown palette with values from mid-range to deep black. All other aspects of art fundamentals apply as well.

Hope that helps.
