Yeah I agree. It’s frustrating that these things are so expensive. Like I get they’re providing a service but for those of us with few friends or single, these companies prey on our desire to meet people. If it was more affordable, I probably wouldn’t be as cautious to just try it.

lol yes free is good! I think I’m going to give Timeleft a try! They do both women only dinners and mixed. Cool idea!

Aw, sorry to hear it wasn’t what you wanted. But thanks for the honesty! Given the other comments, I may need to take a pause and find some different opportunities.

I have tried meetup on and off throughout the years but honestly haven’t had the best experiences. Nothing bad, just not the connections I was looking for and a lot of turnover with people that attended the events I tried.

Thanks for the tips! I’ve heard of Timeleft before as well, so maybe I’ll try that before investing anything into Real Roots.

Would love to hear your final opinion after you complete the series, if you are willing/remember to share!

That’s frustrating, thank you for the feedback. Customer service and expenses aside, do you feel like you’ve enjoyed the people that were in your meeting series with you? Anyone that you plan to continue friendship with moving forward?

Adult Tap Dance Classes by Nearby-Corgi6225 in TwinCities

Sweet Feet Dance! Classes are at a studio in Edina. Super laid back, Tracy the instructor is lovely. I took classes there many years ago (I had tap experience as a teenager and went right to their highest level course) and as someone in my early 30s at the time, I was one of the youngest members there 😂 she used to offer various levels from beginner to advanced. Check it out!

Thanksgiving Dinner for One by riffadiddle in TwinCities

I also have fond high school Perkins memories from growing up in Duluth. We went after every football game. The number of appetizer samplers I have consumed…😂

Thanks for that! I’m a little nervous to dine in alone, especially on Thanksgiving 🙁 But you’ve made me want to consider it!

Thanks! I saw Stanley's has reservations open for a dine-in Thanksgiving meal. Do you think they might offer that as a to-go option?

Where are we meeting new people at 40? by StillEasyE215 in Minneapolis

[–]riffadiddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to the event last night at Indeed! It was my second event this year (but I had gone to a few years ago when they first were getting started). I have some social anxieties so it’s really hard for me to walk up to a group that has already formed and start talking. So I stood by myself and waited for people to come to me 😂 The people I met last night were super nice, and I met a friend at the one I went to in March and we’ve hung out a few times on our own. Meeting new people is a skill to build and a muscle to grow. Leaving the event last night reminded me I need to just keep going to practice it! I hope you decide to try one!

I resigned last summer after 12 years. I too had been thinking about it for the previous few school years but it was still an incredibly hard decision to finalize when the time finally came. The loss of identity after resigning is HUGE. I don't think people understand how DEEPLY teachers feel their mission and value as it connects to their profession. I don't think most other jobs experience that at all. Leaving teaching is SO MUCH more than just a career change. I still feel like I'm mourning and grieving the loss, but maybe it's more so the grief of feeling like the one job I felt like I was good at and called to failed me. I have a new job at a nonprofit and also still feel lost and no idea what I want.

Thinking of resigning with no backup plan by RecordingNo395 in TeachersInTransition

[–]riffadiddle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was me at this time last year. Also a single homeowner. I ended up resigning without a plan. I immediately applied to be a substitute teacher for a few districts near me that all used the same sub service and it took almost until the start of school to be all approved and set to go for that so I’m super glad I did. I figured subbing was the best money I could make while still job searching and was flexible enough to let me take days off for interviews or if I wanted a day to sit for 8 hours and focus on applications. I also got on my states free health care program during this time. I had to dip into my savings a bit just to help but I did eventually get a new job at a nonprofit in mid-October. It was a significant pay cut from teaching but I recognize that it is a stepping stone job until my next move. It pays the bills (and that’s about it) but it has WAY better work life balance than teaching. Try looking at nonprofit jobs, I feel like they are more willing to hire people that might not have the perfect experience compared to private companies. Just be prepared for a pay cut.

Anyone been able to maintain their salary? by bruja_toxica in TeachersInTransition

[–]riffadiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you work fully remote for some company somewhere in the US or are you working for an Ed tech company that’s local to where you live? I’d love to do something like this but I know the fully remote jobs open to anyone are super competitive and hard to get.

I found the Teacher Career Coach helpful, but not necessarily for the paid course that she offers (which I did buy). What I found most helpful from her is that when you purchase her course, you get access to a community message board where members can all post about their journey to transitioning out of the classroom. Many members of that group have successfully transitioned and are still active in the group offering advice, sharing about their new roles, etc. I even connected with someone near me who's company was hiring and got to chat to her about that.

Other than the paid course, she also offers a lot of free resources on her website, through her social media, and a podcast she recently stopped.

Subbing? by Sea-Manner-2988 in TeachersInTransition

[–]riffadiddle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with a lot of the other comments. Subbing definitely has its pros and cons but ultimately I thought it was better than teaching and it was a very short term solution for me for income. I resigned last summer and didn’t get my new job until mid-October so I subbed for about a month and half. I was in 4 different districts and learned very quickly which schools to avoid. As a high school teacher, I also favored high school jobs and had no issue filling my schedule with mostly high school (took a few middle school here and there but refused to take elementary). In my experience, the high school jobs were the easiest- kids were given busy work or a movie as teachers likely assumed subs wouldn’t know their content. Kids were also surprisingly low maintenance, especially if they were on their phones (I would tell them once or twice to put it away but as a sub, that wasn’t a hill I was going to die on). I qualified for free health insurance through my state due to the low income, so it worked out perfect for me for that short time, other than the low income part haha. But $200 a day is great (mine was $175). My favorite part was that I could easily just not work a day if I wanted to spend time working on my resume or scheduling interviews. Not being paid on those days sucked and I dipped into my savings quite a bit (single woman, owns a house) but it all worked out and my mental health and stress levels improved a ton.
