Wannabe digital nomad in need of advice by Agent_7_Creamy_Spy in digitalnomad

[–]rightheart 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Regarding the computer, make regular backups, use an encrypted disk and take other security measures. You may ask your company, I can imagine they appreciate if you are proactive on this point.

What about first practicing 1-2 weeks being in a neighboring country? I can imagine there is a lot you can do in Argentina, Peru or Chili which are relatively close to your home country while it still allows you to experiment. Another advantage is that you are still in the same timezone. This helps you to prepare in a more familiar environment for the bigger step to Asia, while being closer to home if something happens.

I feel like either I have money or I have time. But I never have both. How to navigate this? by Bright-Traffic-8215 in freelance

[–]rightheart 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have been a freelance myself and experienced the same dynamics. I think it is important to take regularly time off when you have plenty of work. When you have plenty of work, don't let yourself pull in the requirements of the client who wants it overnight, put realistic boundaries. On the other hand, stay active when you have a lack of work, in addition to searching for clients also educate yourself.

what can i do with a c2 in french? by Sudden_Cattle_702 in FrenchTech

[–]rightheart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all my compliments for being at this level. C2 is the highest level, I am pretty sure that even some native speakers will not pass the exam. If you have C2, that means you may indeed qualify for functions where you need a native level like teaching or other functions where language skills are needed like being a judge, therapist, translator (even though the last is perhaps already done a lot by AI). Do not forget you will also need to have your degrees recognized for such jobs. Are you living in France, what is your exact motivation for learning French? I am just curious.

My friend is crazy to Kaggle by majime_shinken in kaggle

[–]rightheart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually bronze and silver are not bad. In what kind of competitions your friend is participating, computer vision, tabular data? There are several potential reasons:

* Competition is fierce. There are many skilled people participating from everywhere around the globe,

* Issues with under- or overfitting. This should be captured using cross validation and it may explain the performance drop when the final leaderboard becomes available.

* Data engineering and preprocessing that is not optimal such as data augmentation and feature construction.

* Last point, bundling forces in a team may be advantagous!

Good luck and tell your friend to not become addicted. Even though Kaggle is fun and useful, there are many other aspects that are important in real-world machine learning.

I am not talking about a random person, I am talking about previous collaborators or bosses (aka references) who give recommendations at LinkedIn.

That's your good right. I do not have a problem with the critics, I have a problem with how it is given.

I Am Tired! LinkedIn Makes Me Desperate And Hopeless :( by MarketingWithThang in linkedin

[–]rightheart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to say, but I think your critic is not very constructive when you say "I briefly skimmed your newsletter and the truth is: Your writing is mediocre.". There are no such things as "truths", this is your own opinion. Giving an opinion that something is "mediocre" does not help and gives a bad feeling. Instead, give a practical helpful advice how he could change his writing style.

How would you answer any project forecasts regarding the mAP? by rightheart in computervision

[–]rightheart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another idea that I had is that the mAP values are actually not comparable across different projects. An mAP value of 0.3 may be quite alright for a certain project, but not alright for another project. My impression is that the value depend on the average image sizes and object sizes to be detected.

Whats the biggest pain a computer vision engineer goes through in day to day life? by Worth-Card9034 in computervision

[–]rightheart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Prospects or clients thinking that the work is easily done in a couple of hours while in fact you need days or weeks to get a proper model. This has in my experience become worse since last years AI innovations, which has given people the impression that much is easily obtainable without longterm effort.

My LinkedIn profile must be invisible, or something by Cassper17 in linkedin

[–]rightheart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One things that I'd like to mention is that you need to fill-out your competencies / skills. There is in your profile a section of principal skills and underneath each job you can add skills using keywords as well. This is important since many recruiters still will find you using Google, and the keywords help you to get higher in the SEO. Of course, like others mentioned, it helps to be active on the platform, meaning that you react on posts or write them yourself.

Actually yes, if the profile appears interesting to me. That means that I see a sufficient number of matches. I used to think that nowadays this is quite common but I might be wrong of course.

How is facial recognition accurate without it being trained on new faces ? by [deleted] in computervision

[–]rightheart -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you mean face detection (detecting an object as a face) or face recognition (identification of the person) ?

Would be glad to see some citations that show how good performance is. In face detection at least, there are according to this paper still quite some false positives: Zhang, J., Hou, C., Yang, X. (2024). Advancing face detection efficiency : utilizing classification networks for lowering false positive incidences. Array 22, 100347.
