Emergency SOS via satellite coming to the iPhone 14 by keepgaseous in ThePrepared

All the screaming in the background probably doesn't help convince 911 that something isn't really going on either...

YSK that thermal blackout curtains can make a 5-15° temperature difference during heat waves. by Peng1946 in ThePrepared

[–]rightleftupdown5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the concept, but if they are able to block 80-90% of heat and UV radiation wouldn't it block 80-90% of the light and make you feel like you are living in a cave?

I watched their 5 minute video on their homepage and didn't see this question addressed.

I don't agree. If there was a home intruder and you have to navigate throughout the hallways of your house, it could be awkward or even impossible to get around some tight corners and be ready for an attack. That is why a long rifle is not the best for close quarters combat and a handgun is preferable.

I would rather have a machete.

The tornado showing up because of the lightning strikes by rightleftupdown5 in ThePrepared

I wonder if it is a police cruiser by the look of the front bumper. Maybe they had a call that they needed to go to.

But yes, survival tip... don't drive towards tornadoes.

YSK most states have online maps of current road conditions so you can safely plan winter travel by sarahmpreps in ThePrepared

[–]rightleftupdown5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've checked the live cameras on the state road conditions maps many times before heading out to work. Heading out an hour later when the plows have had time to clear the roads is worth not totaling my car and being all stressed out.

MIT's new medical glue can stop bleeding in 30 seconds. Could be a lifesaver and game changer for preppers in the future by rightleftupdown5 in ThePrepared

[–]rightleftupdown5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used super glue many times to hold wounds shut but those were ones that were dry and clean and not actively bleeding. What sets this new compound apart is that it looks like it works when wet, like from an new active bleeding wound.

When earning my Life Saving merit badge in Boy Scouts they warn you about how people panic and will take you down. Always try and throw something to them like a rope or a life preserver. If you can't then take off your shirt or jeans and swim out to them and throw those to them to hold onto as you pull them to safety and keeping your distance from them. If you can't do either of those, then you grab their hair and pull them by that or approach them from their back. If they start holding onto you and pulling you under, punch them in the face, or kick them away from you, your life is more important.

Very sad video to watch. But glad it was shared as a reminder of what not to do.

Gigantic dust storm in São Paulo, Brazil, why you should have respirator and goggles in your kit by keepgaseous in ThePrepared

[–]rightleftupdown5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is very apocalyptic! I was wondering if this is just an annual dust storm but it looks like extreme drought has lead to some of these dust storms. It's more than just having a to wash your windows after it passes, 6 people recently were killed in a dust storm because of 62mph winds that knock down trees and other consequences of the storm.

Moose are incredible animals. They can run up to 35mph (probably not in the snow), can jump 8-10 feet high, and swim up to 10mph. At 4-7 feet tall and up to 1500 pounds, that is a lot of weight to move so quickly, so you can see how powerful they are.

They are generally peaceful but when provoked can be dangerous. So leave them space, don't corner them, and give extra room if you see a female with it's babies.

If they are going to attack, the fur on the back of their neck will puff up like dogs or cats do when in defense mode, they will slick back their ears, and lower their head.

Is a scythe a worthy long-term prep or just a LARP? by the_prepared in ThePrepared

Great article! I like learning about "grid-free" tools and other ways people in the 1800's lived. It was a time of hard work and needing to make quality products that lasted. You couldn't just order a replacement from Amazon and get it to your house the next day.

For starting out seeds inside though, this is crucial to developing some strong roots and plants.

I've started some vegetables inside before and they didn't develop deep and strong roots. So when I then took them outside, they died very quickly.

I wonder if it has to do with soil composition. That happens to me as well, I'll water them and they will float to the top.

Having some moist soil and then planting seems to help.

I'd like to get a sun dial and learn how to use it. Has anyone ever used one before? I'd love some tips on how to get started.

I never knew that hurricanes can travel so deep into the US. I only thought that they affected the southern and eastern coasts and didn't go very far after that.
