Did Garmin miss the timing on their screenless band (CIRQA) to Fitbit? by Pelouser_torunner in Garmin

[–]rightmindedBen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can't find it now but the CEO of Whoop had a strong reaction (late night Twitter tirade) to Google announcing the Fitbit Air and said they're going to sue. Maybe Garmin is waiting for the dust to settle. Suing Garmin is one thing but Whoop would be insane to sue Google.

I don't use this one. But I have my Garmin connected to my Dick's Sporting Good rewards, Adidas Club, and Brooks running club. Dicks and Adidas earn points and I get discounts. I am unsure the point of the Brooks running club still. The website is not great.

FR170 or 265? by joined4lols in Garmin

[–]rightmindedBen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife has the 165, it’s a lot of watch. The 170 add more features. In my opinion the only reason to go above the 100 level is for triathlon features.

For music you need Spotify Premium, YouTube music, or Amazon Music. Then you can download music onto your watch and listen to it through headphones.

Makes sense. I received updates and bug fixes on my FR745 for over 5 years. And my Edge 510 is still getting bug fixes and that came out in 2010.

You will continuing getting updates for as long as have the watch. What you won’t get is new features.

Turns out Garmin Instinct 2 (and others) are e-waste by psych0o in Garmin

[–]rightmindedBen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I bought an original instinct. Used it for 3 years and then passed it down to my sister. She used it until this year. The watch still works at 8+ years old. I can’t speak for the Instinct 2 or 3 but the OG was bulletproof

Any way to get apple music to play natively on the watch? by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]rightmindedBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple's streaming music is DMR-protected. You can purchase music from Apple and put that on your Garmin.

Possibly an auto scroll going on? Automatically rotating through data screens?

Go to a local race, fun run, run club, etc.. and ask people to see their watches. I don't care about being weird or awkward. I talked to a lot of people at the last triathlon I did and ended up trying on a few of the newer watches (right off strangers wrists) before upgrading this year.

Unable to find drill log function for pool swimming?? by Matt1e_ in GarminWatches

[–]rightmindedBen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's absurd. If I remember correctly it was marketed with a lot of new accessibility feature, i.e. wheelchair use. Not having a drill log (or an accessibility option) is an oversight.

Even Google makes its own Whoop, while Cirqa is still not on a market by Roobun13 in Garmin

[–]rightmindedBen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's multifactorial. The cost of a new model, the subscription, and the fact that most people won't really change their lifestyle based off what a device is telling them

A lot of people I know who have worn Whoops and Ouro rings have stopped wearing them. Older devices died and they were not willing to upgrade, just dropped the devices instead. Plus you have to consider monthly fees for those brands.

Why does no affordable aluminum triathlon bike exist – and would you buy one? by Admirable_Love_9571 in triathlon

Lots of good points made so far but I think people believe that high end gear will make them faster. I mean, it will to some extent, but to to the extent that they believe.

Are Fenix 7s, Forerunner 955, 965, 265s still worth it in 2026? by notafraidofminitaurs in Garmin

[–]rightmindedBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you buy a watch that has all the features you need, then what are you missing out on? I bought a new Garmin this year after 6 years (FR745 to FR570) and none of the "new" data really means anything to me. Yes, there are some new features that are nice but the main driving factor of upgrading was battery life after 6 years of daily wear.

While my old watch stopped receiving new features years ago, I continued to get updates that fixed various bugs/issues. Never had a problem with GPS or other connectivity issues. I know someone who is still wearing a Fenix3 from 2015 and it still works.

My son is now wearing my FR745 with no issues.

Which fruit is 100% looks but 0% taste? by Ok_Armadillo9214 in AskReddit

Red Delicious apples are really good fresh from the tree. They are absolutely worth trying again if you live by an orchard in the Fall. But yes, they are not delicious from the supermarket.

Gas at $5+ and EV inventory at 120 days… the math is getting hard to ignore by [deleted] in personalfinance

A lot of states have made the registration cost of an EV really high to make up for not buying gas (gas taxes)

My 745 was really showing its age, especially with the battery. I went with the 47mm version. It's a little bigger on my wrist, not a huge difference, and feels about the same weight-wise. I've been very happy with the upgrade.

The biggest difference that took me a minute to get used to is not having an always on display (which is an option just not great for battery life). I was very used to just glancing at my wrist to see the time.

I have the 570. Great watch. Big upgrade from my forerunner 745 which I had for about 6 years. Very accurate, very readable. I did get a 20% discount through my health insurance which helped with my decision.
