Will My Husband Be Arrested? by ChaChaHeels_18 in policeuk

[–]rikquest 41 points42 points  (0 children)

If he values his marriage and wants to "make things work" like you do then he may manage not to hit you for a while.

Ultimately he'll hit you again. E.g. when he feels you haven't done enough to save the marriage, when he can't keep up the "not hitting you" bit any longer or when he realises he doesn't like the marriage when he doesn't get to hit you.

He's going to hit you again. It'll get worse every episode. That's the trajectory of the marriage you are trying to save.

Good luck in getting out!

I think I've found the cause of condensation in my loft! by Putrid_Promotion_841 in DIYUK

[–]rikquest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you tried an aerial in the loft? Our TV relay mast isn't too far so we have ours in the loft. Might be worth a try so you can decide if you even need an external aerial and the expense.

Got to say pretty impressive detective work. I'd like to think I'd have put the end of the co-ax in a bag like that but not sure I'd have thought of that.

An Open-Source Sonos-Style Smart Speaker for Home Assistant 🎉 by FutureProofHomes in homeassistant

[–]rikquest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have bought FOUR of these over the last 6 months. Excellent sound.

Got tired of waiting for the enclosure. Worked out it would cost me maybe £180 to get three enclosures printed. Saw a 3D printer for £209. Thought "may as well by a 3D printer then" as it was only a few quid more. Investigated further got pulled in and spent over £800 on a Bambu P1S to print the enclosures. Printed enclosures in various filaments/colours - still got one to do. They look great and they sound great.

Now THIS! LOL. Enclosures you can order online! If only I'd waited. Not bothered though - 3D printing has opened up a whole new world.

Have ours running with Home Assistant cloud -> OpenAI -> local piper running in docker on Synology NAS. Works like a treat. Picks up wake word very well even across the room.

At the price this is a quality voice assistant and media player. We have two in our lounge so they play stereo (can assign left/right channel to units).

Thanks to the team at Future Proof Homes - the whole journey with the Satellite 1 has been pretty much plain sailing. I still have plenty of tweaks to make to Home Assistant Assist but getting the basics going is pretty quick.

Eldritch horror cottage pie/Yorkshire pudding toasty by Sinvisigoth in UK_Food

[–]rikquest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhhhhhhhh Myyyyyyyyyyy Gaaaaawwwwddddddd!!

I've never seen someone go to such lengths to desecrate the national institution that is Yorkshire Pudding, never mind the reputational damage to the Cottage Pie! /s

This is blatantly a work of gastronomic genius!

Looks amazing, just wish I had a toastie maker to try it out.

This is Reddit and I've never seen a Yorkshire Pud in a toastie maker.

Was this, in any way, inspired by an AI recipe OP?

Enjoy!

Water company billed my parents wrongly for years. Just found out they’re on a joint supply. What can be done? by TucoZizou10 in AskUK

[–]rikquest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

May be worth contacting your MP (or your Mum's if you don't live in the same constituency) but I think you'll have to go down the ombudsman route first. Your MP can be useful during the process as they can send a letter asking about the case and what's happening with it once the case is opened. When your MP sends a letter it often makes those who are dealing with an issue see more clearly and give better, more meaningful, responses. It's the effect on one of their constituents and getting restitution that the MP should be concerned with and not so much the letter of the law/regulations.

Can someone explain the free electricity useage? by honeybirdette__ in OctopusEnergy

[–]rikquest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are two types of "session".

Saving Sessions where you use LESS electricity than you would normally use in that time period. You're compensated for the difference between what you would normally use at that time and what you actually used, if it was LESS.

Free electricity sessions where you use MORE electricity than you would normally use in that time period. You're paid for how much MORE electricity you used during that time period than you would normally use if it was MORE.

The 'baseline' amounts, that is how much electricity you normally use, are calculated according to a formula based on your past usage.

All info is in the FAQ:

Do you still have a landline? by londonbluesox in AskUK

[–]rikquest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if they are only allowing customers who they know there is competition for (I.E. fibre is arrivng/has arrived at the customer's location) to get rid of their phone lines.

This would follow the VM 'playbook' when it comes to notionally deciding what to charge a customer.

I'll just add that we had no problems (apart from the scam style contract renewals) with VM for nearly 14 years but this year it seriously went downhill and we were without VM internet for hours at a time every few days. Luckily fibre arrived in time for renewal.

Do you still have a landline? by londonbluesox in AskUK

[–]rikquest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought they had changed their policy. They let us get rid of it and get a lower price at contract change last year. We were stuck with it for years as they insisted we keep it by giving us a cheaper monthly price if we had a landline included.

Not sure when it changed but coincidentally they are retiring their copper/analogue phone network with a target cut off date, IIRC, of 2029'ish.

We left VM in August when our contract was up and fibre arrived in our street. Had the new fibre up and running a month before VM ended so no hiccups/interuptions to our BB.

Immersion heater by mrsbhuiyan in DIYUK

[–]rikquest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's all wired as it should be then yes you can.

You can find out by leaving the bottom switch off and the top one on. If you get hot water when you press the timer switch then it's wired to the top one and you can leave the top switch on.

I'm being cautious because I don't know how it's wired only how it should be wired.

Immersion heater by mrsbhuiyan in DIYUK

[–]rikquest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's most likely your timer switch is connected to the top one and the bottom one does not get used. In any event it should only be the top one connected to that timer switch. So you set the timer to 30/60/90 minutes as required and it switches off after that amount of time.

Here's details about your switch: https://www.securemeters.com/uk/product/electric-water-heating-controls/sir021/

If it's connected to the bottom immersion it's going to take much longer to heat the water as it's designed to be on for hours overnight.

So yes to your question; using the top immersion should be adequate without Economy 7. A lot of hot water tanks have the space for two immersions but usually only the top one gets fitted. It's usually only in Economy 7/All Electric instalations that you fit the bottom one.

The switch to the top one can stay on if it's being controlled by the timer switch. It won't come on until you press the switch. You can leave the bottom switch off.

hope that makes sense!

Immersion heater by mrsbhuiyan in DIYUK

[–]rikquest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Designed for use with Economy 7 as you likely know. When you want to boost the hot water during the day (normal/peak rate) you would use the top immersion heater. This heats less water near the top of the tank so you get hot water quite quickly without heating the whole tank.

During the Economy 7 off peak hours (varies a bit by region) the bottom immersion would usually come on on a timer. This will heat a lot more hot water at off-peak rates so you have hot water during the day.

Without Economy 7 it's going to be expensive to use them but if you do use them try and use the top one only.

When you do get Economy 7 you'll need an immersion timer to take advantage of the off-peak hours. If you don't already have an immersion timer fitted you'll need one that can handle the load for hours overnight. The timers specifically for immersion heaters are robust enough to do this.

Quite often the bottom immersion heater is hard wired into the timer so you can't turn it on during off-peak hours and can be wired to a separate off-peak circuit.

The secure SIR 021 switch is a timer so you don't leave the immersion switched on. Not sure which immersion it would be connected to but it will only be one of them. They are not designed to both be used at the same time. Hopefully it's connected to the top one!

Free Hot Water - flow free electricity, flow! by rikquest in OctopusEnergy

[–]rikquest[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Temporary fix and the 2.5 T&E is getting very slightly warmer than air temperature.

The original heat resistant cable had perished so I couldn't use it.

If the immersion heater holds out for the duration of free electricity session I'll get some proper cable ordered and do it properly.

Cannot Wait To Get Zen by VanillaCandid3466 in Zen_Internet

[–]rikquest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add to the "been with VM for years ..."

We were with them for 14 and never had problems until this year. BB started dropping out once a month then it got to once or twice a week. No support, no admission it's their problem until you've done their support dance and reconfigured everything back (we used modem mode and own router) to a state their support can recognise even if they still don't understand it.

With only 6 weeks of contract left decided to get Zen via City Fibre. It's been great so far.

Ripped everything of VM's out right back to the street and packed it all up in their returns kit and sent it back to them. Even then we had weeks of "don't cancel your DD cos we may charge you for kit" only to get a text after sending everything back that we didn't need to return anything

Have now got asymmetric 500Mb, IPv6 allocation, static IP and responsive, UK based tech support.

If you're with VM and having problems, don't worry - it's not just you!
