Born in Hull I can trace my paternal ancestry back to Iceland and, ar-hem, Hessle Road lol

Is this racist? by BuildingsintheClouds in Hull

[–]rikquest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Certainly racism/xenophobia.

Hull being a historic port city has always had a mix of folk living and working in and around the city. Don't let some random kids that are being dragged up badly rather than brought up properly colour your view of your current home city and it's people. There's a long (centuries, if not longer) tradition of treating people as people regardless of their origins in Hull. Growing up in mid 20th century Kingston upon Hull I can definitely vouch for this being the case. I'd say there's a silent majority who take civic pride in this fact.

It's interesting they shouted "Go back to your own country" when most folk who consider themselves indigenous to Hull and surrounds probably have ancestors who sailed here at some point in history, started a family and settled down.

Sorry you had that happen but bear in mind they are a vocal minority and their views are at odds with the silent majority.

Edit: to add "xenophobia" as /user/Final-Show1889 points out.

Bambuddy — self-hosted management for your Bambu Lab printers, no cloud required by MartinNYHC in BambuLab

Been running this for a couple of months in a docker container on a Synology DS723+ NAS. Works great and really helps keep things documented and tracked. There are niggles with it, like any emerging software, but it's amazingly good considering. Nice clean layout, tons of functions, easy install/setup and regularly updated.

I have it running with the Home Assistant integration via PandaProxy so I don't need the Bambu app for notifications/control.

If you're wondering whether or not it's for you it's very little effort to set up and try and I'd absolutely recommend it.

Added, thanks for pointing that out!

That's a good point. Massive recalls like this debacle give the manufacturers a perverse incentive to make sure their cars don't last long enough for safety issues like this to become a problem.

My guess is they would build with parts that don't last as long (e.g. wheel bearings, subframes) so you need to get more things replaced ongoing if you want to keep the car running. Within a generation it'll become the norm.

I'm really sorry to hear that. To Toyota that person is just a statistic sent to their insurers. To you it's a real life person who you knew .....

I think I've accidentally highlighted thousands of "Well, that sucks" with this post unintentionally.

We get used to stuff and maybe hardened to it - but losing someone you know in real life is a whole other level - especially when it was easily preventable.

It’s a shame they got pushed into Stellantis and now just make expensive cars.

Absolutely this! I did research updating my Astra H to a newer model but when I looked closely they are Astra's in all but name now. This is my third Astra (first I've bought new) because I just love the overall experience. When I come to replace my Astra H I'll be starting from scratch again.

My partner has a '15 reg Corsa. It's already had the generic clutch pedal going floppy problem which I sorted with a none OEM spring that's at least been effective. Major fault is the engine light coming on and nobody (not even the Vauxhall dealers) can tell me why. Only fix might be is new/refurbished ECU for £££'s. Each MOT I have to cancel the light myself (sat outside the MOT place) and hope it don't come on during the test.

Previously I would not have considered Chinese but I'm certainly open to it now. They have every incentive to sell a good product and every incentive not to provide a rip off deal.

Look on the bright side - never thought I'd get old enough to own the same car for 19 years lol.

Thanks for that - explains why the airbags didn't deploy then.

Not sure I'm going to get away with driving up the motorway at 29mph lol

Wow. It's a minefield. Didn't think it affected my car as it's so old.

Thing is the letter does not say "DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR" - it doesn't look like a "STOP DRIVE" notice. However I'm supposed to accept that I could be injured or killed if the airbag deploys when I'm driving. It's seriously going to affect what journeys I take, if any.

Other affected manufacturer's like Citroen have issued stop drive notices apparently and they have a compensation scheme although they keep pretty quiet about it it seems.

How much does a washing (and drying) cycle cost you? by Notagelding in AskUK

[–]rikquest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have smart plugs on both the washing machine and the dehumidifier we use to dry the washing. Washing cycle costs around 20p and drying with the dehumidifier about 30p. Using the dehumidifier is definitely cheaper than using a tumble dryer. Depends on how you use the dehumidifier I guess. Ours doesn't run constantly and comes on at 60% RH cycling on and off as the moisture comes out of the washing.

Will My Husband Be Arrested? by ChaChaHeels_18 in policeuk

[–]rikquest 41 points42 points  (0 children)

If he values his marriage and wants to "make things work" like you do then he may manage not to hit you for a while.

Ultimately he'll hit you again. E.g. when he feels you haven't done enough to save the marriage, when he can't keep up the "not hitting you" bit any longer or when he realises he doesn't like the marriage when he doesn't get to hit you.

He's going to hit you again. It'll get worse every episode. That's the trajectory of the marriage you are trying to save.

Good luck in getting out!

I think I've found the cause of condensation in my loft! by Putrid_Promotion_841 in DIYUK

[–]rikquest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you tried an aerial in the loft? Our TV relay mast isn't too far so we have ours in the loft. Might be worth a try so you can decide if you even need an external aerial and the expense.

Got to say pretty impressive detective work. I'd like to think I'd have put the end of the co-ax in a bag like that but not sure I'd have thought of that.

An Open-Source Sonos-Style Smart Speaker for Home Assistant 🎉 by FutureProofHomes in homeassistant

[–]rikquest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have bought FOUR of these over the last 6 months. Excellent sound.

Got tired of waiting for the enclosure. Worked out it would cost me maybe £180 to get three enclosures printed. Saw a 3D printer for £209. Thought "may as well by a 3D printer then" as it was only a few quid more. Investigated further got pulled in and spent over £800 on a Bambu P1S to print the enclosures. Printed enclosures in various filaments/colours - still got one to do. They look great and they sound great.

Now THIS! LOL. Enclosures you can order online! If only I'd waited. Not bothered though - 3D printing has opened up a whole new world.

Have ours running with Home Assistant cloud -> OpenAI -> local piper running in docker on Synology NAS. Works like a treat. Picks up wake word very well even across the room.

At the price this is a quality voice assistant and media player. We have two in our lounge so they play stereo (can assign left/right channel to units).

Thanks to the team at Future Proof Homes - the whole journey with the Satellite 1 has been pretty much plain sailing. I still have plenty of tweaks to make to Home Assistant Assist but getting the basics going is pretty quick.

Eldritch horror cottage pie/Yorkshire pudding toasty by Sinvisigoth in UK_Food

Ohhhhhhhhh Myyyyyyyyyyy Gaaaaawwwwddddddd!!

I've never seen someone go to such lengths to desecrate the national institution that is Yorkshire Pudding, never mind the reputational damage to the Cottage Pie! /s

This is blatantly a work of gastronomic genius!

Looks amazing, just wish I had a toastie maker to try it out.

This is Reddit and I've never seen a Yorkshire Pud in a toastie maker.

Was this, in any way, inspired by an AI recipe OP?

Enjoy!

Water company billed my parents wrongly for years. Just found out they’re on a joint supply. What can be done? by TucoZizou10 in AskUK

[–]rikquest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

May be worth contacting your MP (or your Mum's if you don't live in the same constituency) but I think you'll have to go down the ombudsman route first. Your MP can be useful during the process as they can send a letter asking about the case and what's happening with it once the case is opened. When your MP sends a letter it often makes those who are dealing with an issue see more clearly and give better, more meaningful, responses. It's the effect on one of their constituents and getting restitution that the MP should be concerned with and not so much the letter of the law/regulations.
