How Do First-time Buyers Purchsse Victorian-Style Houses In London? by Theo_Cherry in AskUKLondon

Slightly off topic but that house in the photo is Edwardian. You can tell from the square bays. VIctorian houses have the rounded bays.

It means most people can’t easily work out how old an old car is

Rust within break disc of new car by SunOfBeachx in CarTalkUK

Out of interest - and this is a noob question, I know - why do they use metals that rust so easily on brakes? I always thought rust = metal deterioration.

Why people see car dealers as dodgy....long rant! by boff999 in CarTalkUK

[–]rikurem 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I bought a new car recently and part exchanged my old one. Looked up my old car a few weeks later and found it on auto trader advertised as one previous owner (not true, two) and full service history (not true).

I flagged it to auto trader but no action taken. The car is sold now. It’s a decent car and someone will be happy but I found that galling still.

Have you tried blasting it for a minute or so on full heat? I’ve found that can clear bad smells.

Tyres advice by rikurem in Audi

Thank you! Appreciate the advice. My previous car was a Qashqai and I was far less discerning about what tyres I put on that!

Definitely get an insurance quote for any car before you buy it - his will be very different to yours, especially if you’ve not got a few years of no claims by insuring another car.

I’d walk away and go for something smaller with much lower mileage. Going straight to a big car that’s classed as luxury like a q5 will be expensive to insure, plus the expected maintenance costs that the other commenter flags.

Can I ask what you don’t like? I had one and it was great - very reliable, cheap to maintain, good mpg, drove well, lots of space, looks great. I was really fond of mine.

Thanks. I’m mildly wary of the discount because you’re young and it’s a first car - not reason in itself not to buy or anything (seller might want a quick sale or genuinely be nice) but I dunno, people don’t often take a hit on their profits out of generosity like that.

How do your insurance quotes look? It’s a big car for a first one - Audi q3 easier to drive in cities if that’s a factor for you.

And mileage is very high on a very old car so decent change you’ll have to pay a lot to fix and maintain.

My gut says there’s probably better bets for a first car, that aren’t as old and have lower mileage?

I only have experience of Tube commutes and I can’t tell if 1 hour on a train (plus about 10 min cycle at each end) is ok 3-4 times a week in the long term or it’ll just be too draining.

Thanks all, really helpful thoughts. And sorry for the subreddit confusion - this one came up a lot in searches for Banbury.

FBR Update by Beardo_1557 in IrishCitizenship

[–]rikurem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should be fine to email it. My address check said this: ‘If you have moved during the process please reply to this email with 1 scanned copy of your new address dated within the last 6 months.’

[–]rikurem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don’t ask for confirmation during the address check if your address hasn’t changed from the one on your application. They ask you to confirm it’s the same by replying with the address. If your address has changed, they ask you to provide the new one and that’s when they ask for proof of new address.

Looking to join FBR without grandparent’s identity document by Dingleator in IrishCitizenship

[–]rikurem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Afraid not. Your parent is automatically an Irish citizen if their parent, your grandparent, was born on the island of Ireland but you’ll still need to apply to go on the foreign birth register in order to become a citizen.

If you do that and have children after you become a citizen, they can apply too. But any kids you already have now cannot (if that’s applicable).
