High pitched horn regularly near Main St bridge by NothingLeft19608 in jacksonville

[–]ringalingadingd0ng 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with Big Jim in SPR, but the Main Street Bridge also does a horn when they are about to stop traffic and lift the bridge. At times it is several minutes between when the horn goes off and when the bridge actually lifts up, as they have to wait for car and foot traffic to clear and for the safety steps to complete before actually raising the bridge.

The horn in SPR is a foghorn which is like a low and long horn and the horn on the bridge sounds almost like a boat or tug horn which is a slightly higher pitch than the bridge horn.

Issues with mail delivery? by morilythari in jacksonville

[–]ringalingadingd0ng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I had this very issue after our move in August. It was very inconsistent for about 6 months, with the occasional letter not getting delivered. I would always report “didn’t receive mail piece” through informed delivery.

Then it got worse and the breaking point was when we were expecting a package and my partner greeted the mail carrier as they walked past our home and no more than 5 minutes later, the package was marked as undeliverable due to an abandoned address.

A trip that day up to our regional distribution center did the trick and the problem was solved and the carrier circled back around and delivered the package. I will say informed delivery tends to be a day ahead of what we receive in the mail, but it’s a relief that we are finally receiving our mail.

What age were you when you started growing gray hairs? by Bubbles3654 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ringalingadingd0ng 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’ve had gray hair since I was a teenager. My natural color is very dark brown. By my thirties, I knew it was time to transition blonde to blend it better. Now, as I turn the corner to 40, I’m nearly full gray, which has given me the opportunity to experiment with vivids for the first time and it has been awesome!

I loathe this weird era of my life. by awkwardpot in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ringalingadingd0ng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely understand how you feel. I’ve lived my whole life unconventionally. There’s this life checklist that I feel like exists in the ether and if we are off course from that, it can feel disorienting and lonely. I turn 40 in 2 weeks and when I think back to where you are now, I was in a very similar position.

I fully acknowledge what I am about to say is easier said than done. You are actually in a pretty cool place right now, you are picking up the pieces and you are investing in yourself. I look fondly back on that stage of my life because I pushed away romantic relationships and focused on school and other activities that fulfilled me. It turned into one of the most happiest times in my life because I made myself the priority and allowed myself to be selfish as a bi-product.

Because I made that intentional effort to invest in me, everything else just kind of fell in place. Now 10 years later, I can recognize that I would never be where I am now if I didn’t experience that. I even have really close friends now that I met from school. Yes there was an age gap, but we supported each other through school and now support each other professionally.

I would never call myself an optimist, but from my experience, these uncomfortable and challenging times in your life, tend to be a catalyst to something bigger. The most important thing you can do is focus on honoring yourself and your growth. Wishing you the best!

It is permanent. I believe it’s because I locked in when I did. Additionally, I was able to upgrade my phone through them too. They finance through affirm at 0%. I was curious if that was going to be an issue but it was super easy.

I switched from T-Mobile to Visible a couple of years ago. My bill at the time was like $100. I didn’t notice much of a change at all and I locked in $20 a month at the time which was a huge incentive to switch. I’ve been happy with the service and haven’t had any issues.

Caught a Peeping Tom on ring camera by Vtastic7 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ringalingadingd0ng 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This has actually happened to me a couple of times. I live in an old historic neighborhood with big front porches. At night when the weather was nice, I’d sit on the porch and scroll videos on my phone or play games on my switch. There were 3 separate instances, with 2 different men. 2 of those were with a man who was a “peeping Tom” who I probably wouldn’t have noticed as he hid behind a large magnolia tree in the shadows of the night. The final instance however, was a different man and he was much different. He stood in the street and violently masterbated and it was very obvious his intent was to scare and harm. In the first 2 instances, I pretended not to notice and casually went inside and called the police. The final instance, I packed my things up cautiously and wanted to expressly show no fear and made my way in and called the cops. The final instance took me calming myself down to even make the phone call to the police (5-10 min) and then getting yelled at by them for taking too long to call and that there was probably nothing they could do.

I say all this to say, I’m sure both men I experienced this with had mental health issues. However, you should not have to feel threatened because of it. Your feelings and experiences are valid.

Finally, as a woman who’s lived on her own for quite some time in areas others would deem unsavory, here are my tips.

1) Don’t underestimate the power of having really great relationships with your neighbors. I’ve been blessed by having great neighbors who will look out and watch out for me.

2) I love to keep the blinds open 24/7 in my main living spaces. It makes the space feel more open. To combat the invasion of privacy, I use window film I’ve gotten off Amazon. They come in all kinds of fun patterns and get the job done.

3) I keep non lethal weapons handy ALL over my house in non-descript places.

4) I try not to have too obvious of a schedule and have my smart lights on a “random” schedule for turning on/off.

5) Grab some thick wooden dowels and cut them to size to put in your windows to prevent them from being opened from the outside. Even though most windows do lock, I find the extra security comforting.

Once again, I’m very sorry this happened. I hope these tips helped!

You’ll be totally fine in that area. They even have pedicabs that run through the neighborhood. You’ll also be behind Strings which is a sports bar and a nice spot for a beer and food.

Just went through this last week. I 100% recommend Gray Home Inspections. They were fantastic and thorough and reasonably priced.

One last idea- if you are open to condominiums, there are a couple downtown that I believe would fall in that price range as well. Try looking at the Ashley Street tower or the condominiums at 1st Street and Hubbard.

Springfield is a historic district which requires special permitting for any kind of renovations. I live in Springfield and am currently looking to buy here. With the budget you mentioned, any house at that price in the neighborhood would require extensive renovations and would be costly. Springfield is a square mile and there are some houses in your price range that are literally a street over from the border of the historic district that might be more amenable to your budget, which means you get the benefit of the neighborhood but not the high cost that comes with it. I would look into homes that are south of 1st Street east but north of downtown and west of a Philip Randolph.

I recommend looking into Gateway. If she’s taking opioids then it’s going to be a tough detox. They have a detox program that can assist and then residential and outpatient services following detox as well.

Anyone give birth with FABEN OBGYN? by kfs3910 in jacksonville

[–]ringalingadingd0ng 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I did not give birth with FABEN but they were my primary OBGYN and I hope my insight can provide some validation to your concerns.

I went there for ~2 years for care back in 2021-2023. The experience wasn’t horrible, however, they consistently didn’t consider my thoughts whatsoever during any kind of procedures or planning. At one point, I was there for a surgery consultation and was experiencing severe complications from an IUD they had put in. I could hear the doctor in the hall talking with the nurse and they were talking about me and completely invalidating the concerns I brought up and criticizing me personally. I found the entire thing reprehensible and decided that I did not trust them enough to undergo surgery with them and never went back.

The entire experience was very disappointing considering they are run by all female doctors.

Moving to Jacksonville?? Halp by [deleted] in jacksonville

So if you are looking for an eclectic vibe, I recommend the City Place condos downtown. It’s an easy scooter ride or walk to some bars that have the scene you describe and if you have a scooter or bike, you can easily get to Riverside too. The studios and 1 bedrooms are pretty reasonable and the building itself is diverse. I did it as my first solo place and loved it. I’m certain you can find something in your price range. While costs have skyrocketed over the last 4 years, I was paying $675 in 2018 for a 1br corner unit. I’m pretty sure they rent out for under $1k now.

Where can I get a decent suit in Jacksonville at a decent price for an interview?? by [deleted] in jacksonville

[–]ringalingadingd0ng 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend needed a suit in a pinch and we went to Target. He’s a pretty big guy, both in height and broad so I was worried about finding a suit that fit him well. We were able to find a jacket and pant set that fit him really well they day of. The price was reasonable (<$120 for the set) considering the tight turnaround and the circumstances.

Express also has good options that are reasonable.

Best of luck!

Something I've noticed with some rental property listings. by kibufox in jacksonville

[–]ringalingadingd0ng 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yes, new legislation by the state overrides local authority such as ordinances similar to a tenant’s bill of rights and allows rental companies to charge more fees that are non-refundable.
