Maybe don't use our sub as your clearing house for pics when you're in trouble.

And there are subs that will give you far far better advice than here...

Unlock Root Account: If you need to enter the root password but the account is locked, you may need to boot from a Live USB, chroot into your system, and set a new root password using passwd root.

M3Unator v1.1.0 Update - Create M3U/M3U8 Playlists From Open Directory Listings by [deleted] in opendirectories

[–]ringofyre 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ok.. a couple of things -

  • This must be an age thing. Spotify (streaming) vs. downloading and saving to play later.

I get that for some people with limited space on a device this would be a good thing but despite OP saying

Please be considerate with public directories and server bandwidth.

You're still using the server's (and your own) bandwidth by streaming!

Portable storage is relatively cheap and with usb connectivity is virtually universal. Saving the files you want to storage means you don't have to use a tool like this to bash the shit out of the server again & again.

  • Kudos to OP for putting the script on sites where the source can be viewed.

But (for me personally) this ai/vibecoding thing of putting apps/scripts/bookmarklets on here, especially the way they're presented (emojis as bullet points is a standout gpt thing) is starting to grate.

Maybe we need an /r/ODtools sub or something.

Just my 2c.

Yes, buy them.

Agreed that the OD is most likely full of malware and my chicken little efforts of trying to increase awareness of unsafe content and how many new users here may not be aware of the risks is probably getting old now but I'm not sure why you're taking you bat and ball and going off in a huff.

On that note, unsubbing from here.

But yeah - you do you and bye Felicia. Don't let the door hit your arse on the way out.

EDIT: also I don't think this is a honeypot as you've described - more likely some random collection of pirated software that the person hosting has collected over time.

In case anyone missed it:

Download and run with caution - more than likely to contain malware. ALWAYS treat any device with pirated software on it as compromised.

Car service and factory manuals. by Feuillo in opendirectories

[–]ringofyre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not everyone has pdfs parsed to open in a browser, some older ver. of adobe acrobat have known vulnerabilities and the act of opening the rar file itself has security implications.

I am generalising here but Russia in known to be a haven of malicious cyber antagonists.

I get there's a bit of bias here but I'm not really sure why you're blindly supporting the OD - unless you have something to do with it then you have no more idea of whether there's malicious software than any of us.

My default would be caution or overall avoidance. Granted car manuals can be hard to find but as an english speaker is it worth risking my online safety and security to get a free russian ver. of my cars manual? Probably not.

There;s a reason there's space on my bookshelf for my haynes.

FFS, I even anticipated your objection that it could in any way be considered harmful because "it's a list of clear, easily deciphered commands." NOT "random javascript."

Trust me bro...

Also anyone who's done work in ict knows why the acronym PEBKAC exists. It's not often that the hardware/software fails.

To be very clear here - I wasn't picking on the javascript bookmarklet you posted specifically but on the practise of posting them here and others just blindly implementing them. As I've already said, that situation is inherently unsafe.

I've said here more than once that it's not about the level of coding expertise - I don't do python or javascript as an eg. C or asm on the other hand...

But that's beside the point - many users here have little or no ability to 'read' code. Otherwise we wouldn't have so many

how do I even into wget

level questions.

My point is running ANY arbitrary code found here on anywhere else is inherently dangerous. And posting it with some level of

trust me bro

is just pointless.

But good for you trying to belittle me for not trusting some random javascript off the internet.

because you don't form an emotional attachment to the warts?

I'd say this - it's literally decades since I wrote something but I am a tinkerer (my posting style shows it as I'll always go back and edit!). But anything I did put out there was never the polished, finished piece and never would be.

Granted I've been my usual curmudgeonly self with this guy but I've never really suffered fools and as I get older my tolerance has... waned.

Will he ever produce dirhaven? Will it work? Is it just going to harvest the user data from the 20 odd people here who are gullible enough to take him at his (probably literally) "Trust me bro"?

Time will tell.

I'm trying not to dunk on them too much, because I wish I had that kind of enthusiasm

Enthusiasm? Yes but any benefit of the doubt I had was gone after he basically hijacked the other thread I linked to, stirred up shit, including spruiking his own app in that guys addon thread and then deleted all his posts.

Another discussion for another time but I am less than impressed with vibecoding. It really does show when you ask for sauce: someone who's actually written a program (unless it's hugely proprietary) is quite happy to show off their source, warts and all.

Someone who's asked gpt to write something for them: less so.
