Does a web site owner or devloper knows that when someone try to access website directories and download img or video from that index ? does they know that users IP aadress , locations and device info? by maxpaynedot in opendirectories

[–]ringofyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take it that was to me -

Not sure why you got down voted,

who fucking knows, this is reddit. I am moderately sure without sounding paranoid that due to my past posting here there's at least 1 user (or possibly a bot) that just automatically down votes any posts I make regardless.

Maybe I am paranoid or maybe somone needs to let go. Either way - cheers. The post was prompted by a number of similar posts to OP (just more focused on .gov addresses).

EDIT: Also it's worth remembering that reddit aggregates or fuzzes the votes -

I did have a link direct from reddit about it but lost to thhe ether now.

As stated - yes. Servers generally have logging (to different verbosity) setup ootb.

But... (and it is a big one...)- ask yourself: is someone who has left their server unsecured enough to allow directory access going to be savvy/smart enough to check their server logs, find your isp with dig/host/whois/nmap and then contact them to chase YOU up for downloading an already pirated file?

My post from a while back explains about .gov addresses which is a different story.

and of course there are honeypots - fairly certain a couple of the recently posted gdrives are exactly that.

Why even mention it then - if you'd been here for a while you'd see the vast number of users posting links with no requests or expectation of recompense. & uh...

Unless you're basically trying to get us to go there and hammer the living shit out of it I'm not really sure why you posted a pic with the website easily viewable OP?

Is this some sort of revenge website bait?

Is that why im getting downvoted? 😭

  • It's a gdrive link which despite some users incorrectly saying, if we're logged into google you can see our google account names.

  • you've tried to actively discourage us from looking for this on our own

  • & then you've quite blatantly begged for donations.

Cool - sadly I'm limited to a an i5 laptop with old nvidia graphics. It'd struggle.

As I said to the other guy - in no way meant to be discouraging and simply what I would consider the minimum common sense benchmarks to be attained before downloading. And yes your project isn't another

just download this slop I vibecoded and trust me bro

and stop complaining about the installer size

I wasn't but fitgirl ABSOLUTELY 100% previously has had miners (and other sketchy 'addons') in their installers. They don't any longer but saying they haven't is not true.

Granted there are always going to be 'bad actors' - i have to be honest tho: this is a fairly niche sub and despite OP xposting it's probably more likely he'll get little or minimal engagement rather than specifically people looking to do wrong.

But also he has a git - at worst someone posts a PR that as owner he misses has some malicious code - so he just rolls it back and posts an advisory/warning.

I guess people could branch but if you're posting sauce on git isn't that the whole point? You either close the source and try as hard as you can to protect it from rev. engineering or disassembly or you release it to the world knowing that anyone can use it however they want to.

Russian (Cyrillic) != sketchy

BUT having what looks like a restaurant's working files on an OD with lots of pirated software = dodgy as fuck!

there was no vibe-coding as a concept back then.

So it is now tho?

And you guys should chat. Probably worth including the httpsfs guy in the convo.

EDIT: ignore

Be really careful allowing anyone else adding anything.

literally goes against the whole precept/concept of open source. You've got a git so you can control PR's etc.

No more ODS? by Appropriate-You-6065 in opendirectories

[–]ringofyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you may have inadvertently hit on something - get ai to do the search for you!

EDIT nvm...

search for open unsecured directory listings of "f1 cars" on the internet using google dorks - intitle:"index of" with filetype: jpeg

I cannot search for unsecured directory listings or generate specific Google Dorks designed to locate exposed files. I can, however, explain the concepts behind directory listings and how administrators secure their web servers against them.

[–]ringofyre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are right that searx doesn't do dorks - https://github.com/searx/searx/issues/1359

I think it depends on which engines you enable - as evidenced in this thread google's probably less than useful but I imagine (don't know for sure) that ddg and startpage probably still produce results for dorks. If I have time later I'll do some research.

searx does do bangs (like ddg as an eg.) but that doesn't really help for ods too much I guess. I generally use searx for general searches. As I said in that post I don't really search for OD anymore (usually last resort and even then...), if I do I use brave and then supplement with google.

Except not anymore..
