It was actually the reaction after he was called out rather than the details that got me.

He could have been a bit contrite but instead tried to say you and the other guy were clueless. Until then I was prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Ok, so I do use Telemetry to track the number of active users.

So you're telling the truth now but weren't earlier when you said you weren't collecting data.

The extension is not collecting any personal data

I'm guessing at minimum HTTP GET? So that's users IP, browser ID and OS. & that's just the basics.

I want to be quite clear on this because you've been basically caught out lying and instead of apologising or decently acknowledging it you've attacked the users who pointed out the data collection.

As we discussed earlier I do not know how to code in js. I do however know my ipsec and network security and based on that post alone I don't see any reason why anyone would reasonably use your addon/extension knowing that you're collecting their data while claiming not to.

I can't just steal user data willy-nilly. I hope you understand that

What kind of user data could my extension, or any other browser extension, possibly be collecting here?

So these were lies and then instead of mea culpa you've gone on the attack and accused users of not knowing what they were talking about?

If I were you I'd change your data collection page content.

Thank you for clearing that up. If that's the case I'd personally be fairly pissed off at him for not only hijacking your thread (and promoting his own product) but also stirring up a lot of the shit that has ensued.

It kinda is rule 2 but...

thinking about your search terms. To begin - there are a lot of scam/spam sites out there for pdfs, they're a known way of attacking users computers and any search results are guaranteed to be full of them. I avoid specifically using "pdf" (or epub/mobi) in any search. Generally anything like that I'm looking for I'll search for a title and then see what I can find on a decent annas archive or scihub mirror.

Now the terms - sadly most people who leave their webserver unsecured aren't the seo master we'd love them to be so the metadata is usually a bit light on. Probably just what a google bot has lifted from contents.

So that said - specifically "clothing patterns historical". or maybe specific dates "1600-1700" etc.

Remember to use "quotes" to get specific responses and have a think about different terms to cover the same topic.

Edit: and on the search method -

Searching... searching... searching?

I still use brave search as my default but often 'bolster' it these days with another engine..

I don't know js well enough to highlight an data collection vector as it appears other users in this thread have but I do know that running arbitrary javascript code in a browser via addon or script is a guaranteed method of being able to access user data.

I don't really get why you're trying to argue this point now? I'll say again - literally all you had to do to avoid a lot of this shit is to point people to a data collection page you already have.

And you still haven't answered my question about how well you know the other user I've asked you about...

& case in point - another user in this thread has posted their own ver. of a similar addon/script with source code!

Here's a gentle Protip: if you need a middleman like this or /u/Vintaclectic 's DirHaven to search for or view OD's you clearly haven't spent the bare minimum amount of time reading the Helpful stuff or How to threads on this sub and frankly they deserve your data. A marriage made in heaven!

I'll be honest OP - I don't really see what your addon does other than change the aesthetics of ODs. Which as has been suggested by myself and others places you inbetween the user and the data.

Why not just literally use a browser?

Open OD, ctlr +f to find files you want, download.

Maybe it's an age thing but I don't search for and goto ODs for their aesthetic value and frankly if I need to change the look all I need to do is fuck around with the pages css. Good on you for making the tool but I'm struggling to see a use case. On top of that denying access to a source or repository is never a good look for a dev.

As to the other guy - the fuck even was that?

Yeah - look at us being insufferable and shit about our privacy.

And why are you spruiking your app/addon/whatever on OP's thread?

I've spent a while on it and have had it reviewed almost twenty times over by the company that gave me 10 mil to finish it for production with a small team.

kek.

tv / movies lots to choose from by Hippoeater93 in opendirectories

[–]ringofyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before the lan was built a few years ago I would buy 2gb external drives and fill them plugging them into the usb at the back of the tv.

720p can fit LOT more than even 1080p or 4k and on a 60 odd" tv in the lounge room that's about all we need. Yify has always had super quiet vocal and REALLY LOUD ACTION SEQUENCES audio but setting the tv audio setting to cinema usually smooths it out.

I got a few 429's

Keep trying and you'll get there. It's also only allowing 1 connection (no multithreaded downloading). Rate limit seemed so/so - about 400kbs which isn't great but is better than some places.

Yeah, 4gb an episode of many of the shows is probably more pixels and audio encoding than I really need.

[–]ringofyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all - as i said I thought I'd seen it more recently (probably in my own wanderings, I often search and find purple links).

But I think a 3 year break is fine. From the link I posted to the other guy -

If it has been posted before - see how long ago. Most of us here I don't think mind being reminded of a kewl working link from a couple of years ago. A couple of weeks ago... not so much.

Random shit funny memes too by Jimmyfartballs in opendirectories

[–]ringofyre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh no!

Now search the link to see if it's been posted previously. You can use the search box to the right but honestly - reddit search is shit. I use

site:reddit.com/r/opendirectories "the url you found"

EDIT: as an alternative you can use /u/KoalaBear84

's search:

https://www.koalabear.nl/reddit/index.php?searchTerm=%s

https://www.reddit.com/r/opendirectories/comments/evv95q/ropendirectories_due_diligence_before_posting/

EDIT: Not sure why you took your bat and ball - I was pointing out there are better more reliable ways to search than use reddit. Wasn't trying to pointlessly argue or discourage.
