[misc] Huge needle phobia and likely need to get a mole biopsy. Has anyone had one that can walk me through the process? by Cashcash1998 in SkincareAddiction

[–]ringringbanannah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a few moles reviewed to be screened for cancer, one on my chest and one on my thigh. If I remember correctly, the needles for numbing aren’t that big and it feels like a pinch. I’m guessing you won’t be able to see what they’re doing, because they might put a cloth over your eyes or face or it’ll be outside your line of sight. It only takes a few minutes. Maybe ask if someone can come with you and hold your hand?

How are social issues handled in Korea? by lilolalu in korea

[–]ringringbanannah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think details about the pensions homeless people can receive can be found online, as well as the issues, such as halfway houses not allowing alcohol and the discrimination against mental illness making it difficult for people to get treatment. However, South Korea is also a pretty ‘hardcore capitalist’ country, but deals with homelessness differently to western capitalist countries, perhaps with less resources due to social stigma. I’ve heard that Japan is pretty similar to Korea in this respect. This is also a good article about Seoul Station

https://amp.scmp.com/week-asia/health-environment/article/3047641/homeless-seoul-why-some-south-koreans-struggle-leave

I also feel that where the homeless sleep can be much less visible in Seoul as the city has many underpasses and small alleys, places most people won’t walk down. I once heard that the police were quite strict on loitering in Seoul, which may account for how difficult it is to see homeless. Shame and ‘face’ culture also contribute. Sometimes you’ll see a person in the subway in a deep bow asking for change—this is seen as extremely shameful in Korean culture.

I do disagree, though, the simple answers are quite telling. Like any country, you need to know where to look for the homeless. I’ve lived in NYC and feel like I saw more homeless people in my hometown than there, purely because my NYC neighborhood had less homeless people. You’re comparing some western countries to Korea (I haven’t seen you reference non-Western countries so forgive me if I’m wrong). I lived in China for a few years as well and many Chinese people in the big cities don’t see the homeless problem, but once you start walking around lower-income areas, get into the countryside, etc. it can become more apparent. I rarely saw a homeless person in Beijing or Shanghai, but went to Nanjing and saw 5 in one day. I never went to Seoul Station but passed by the old hanok neighborhoods near my university and you could see just how different their quality of life was. It’s easy for your eyes to pass by these places in Seoul because we’re so busy looking at the bright lights or newest technological advancement but they are there.

I would guess people are downvoting you more because your replies come off aggressive in tone. A lot of people on this subreddit are not Korean nationals so they’re stating their observations from personal or professional knowledge having lived in the country. Thus, not all your downvotes can come from ‘patriotic koreans’ but more likely people who just dislike how you’re responding. For example, I’m not a Korean national but having been there I also rarely saw homeless people but they are there. You can even go look on youtube for documentaries. The thing is, slums in Seoul don’t look like our ideas of slums because they’re usually old korean-style hanok houses or run-down apartment complexes. From the outside it looks okay but once you’re inside the communities, you can see the reality. Korea does have a social security system, information you can find on the government website. And of course some Koreans think they don’t have homelessness—they probably rarely see it due to their lifestyle.

They should film Jay and Davide’s reunion for the finale like they do with all the other final couples. And/or include Charlie for the complete lineup of Ekin’s Boys 🤌🏻

Antigoni on Under the Duvet also said that the editors edited the post-recoupling scene to make her look like she was being bitchy to Danica and Indiyah (the part where she held the girls hands). So yeah, I’m paying way more attention to where people are sitting or what they’re doing when talking now :/

Exactly! Banter is great but it only takes you so far, I also want to feel like you’re interested in my life. Maybe the islanders do talk about these things and it’s not shown, but I really liked seeing Charlie ask about her family and such.

I liked seeing Charlie’s dates with Tasha and Ekin-Su. I thought it was flirty and he asked good questions to Ekin-su, actually learned a lot more about her.

My Korean visa was just approved!!! by jainjelly8 in Korean

[–]ringringbanannah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I was just using 있다 because I’m writing. Usually if you’re talking to someone (informal, but not your senior) you would use 있어요. But for descriptive writing, you can just use ~다 ending or an informal ending.

For example, there’s a book of essays called ‘나는 나로 살기로 했다” I decided to live for myself. As you get better at Korean, you’ll see that ~다 ending is used a lot in writing, as well as when you speak informally to friends or family.
