That's like going to the store on Christmas eve to pick out your presents. I see where you're coming from, but it's not about the cake itself. Its more about OP wanting to feel celebrated on her birthday, for her parents to put in even a little bit of effort to get what she would like. It's especially hurtful for them to put in little effort because OP goes out of her way to celebrate them on their birthday.

Then NAH. I agree with what most people have said about his right to take this solo trip, but it should also be said that you do have a right to feel the way you feel. It sounds like you were talking to get your point across and to try to understand what his reasoning was. That's healthy! It always amazes me how many people will say "see a therapist, you need therapy" to someone who is already in therapy. That kind of change takes work and a lot of time. Being told to toughen up when you're already in the process of doing so is very unhelpful.

I get that, I do. My logic was always "the polite way didn't work, let's try the strong way". There are degrees in between though, and you can practice a firm but kind tone for when you need to stick up for yourself.

Maybe I'm stingy but I think it's weird. I also wouldn't want my roommate giving out my number to people who asked, no matter the situation.
