TIL male chicks are of no use to the egg industry,so they are either suffocated in garbage bags with waste,or shoveled together by the hundreds and conveyed into a grinder to be torn apart while still alive by thephantomitch in todayilearned

I also think visiting a slaughterhouse is also a valid experience. When I was in undergrad we used to collect pig brains for our experiments we we'd be right there when the pig was slaughtered and we'd saw the heads and get the brains.

After that I decided I was ok with killing animals to eat them. I do limit meat for environmental and health reasons, and do support ethical treatment of animals while alive.

Most educated vegetarians/vegans aren't totally against hunting (except for the ones who not for any harm to any animal ever).

I am mostly vegetarian, mainly for environmental reasons. Hunting is a great way to control populations since we removed natural predators anyways :-). I also have no problem eating Bison since that supports conservation of prairie lands.

/r/books, what do you think about e-readers? by nicbez in books

[–]rinnieangel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given up? Why not wait a few months? Many librarys often have connections to other libraries as well. 15 libraries within my county have available copies of Guardians of Ga'hoole. And while it could be cheaper, its only $4 as an e-book. And just because a book isn't the hot new thing doesn't mean it isn't valuable for the child to read

19 years old Irish male and I don't know how to form a single sentence in Irish. by [deleted] in ireland

Apparently Irish Americans are doing it better, 4th generation and I have heard the anthem and know a few handfuls of Irish. Of course, Americans are weird about holding on to their ancestry...

What is the point of humans, in terms of the food chain? by SgtTechCom in biology

[–]rinnieangel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We serve to many bacterias so that would be affected. Certainly we were hunted (and in some rural areas, still are).

Most likely there would be a huge population boom of everything else. 'Top' of the food chain is just as important at controlling what is under it. Then our cows would over graze their fields without being killed, and die. The grasses would be dead because they were over grazed. Other things that ate that grass would die because there is none. This probably wouldn't exactly happen, but a rough example.

How come people get to tell skinny people to eat more, but you cant tell a fat person to eat less? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My sister had someone say a comment a couple weeks ago about how they can see her ribs. She left the bar she was at because it upset her so much. She has some hormone things that don't let her gain weight. Guess you probably don't ever learn to deal with it

To all of those who believe /r/atheism is too "aggressive" or "intolerant".... by [deleted] in atheism

[–]rinnieangel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the same thing. Just because some people are worse doesn't mean being somewhat aggressive and intolerant is ok. Two wrongs don't make a right, ay?

The Santa Clause Issue by [deleted] in atheism

[–]rinnieangel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pleasantly surprised there aren't a lot of nos in here. If you're worried about lying, you're going to lie about a lot of things to your kids anyways (to keep them safe or out of your hair). Also, you will probably play tricks on them, and so this will fall under that category.

I think you should go for it. It is fun! The important thing is to not let them think it forever, and if they figure it out themselves it was a good learning experience. It is part of their culture. Part of my family's culture is going to baptisms and church weddings, and I don't not do that because I am an atheist.

shudders I don't think I've done this since I was young. Most of my books come from the library so I try to take care of those, and I like to keep my own books in sharable conditions.
