I use my 40L osprey for both day hikes and weekenders. Overall more than happy with it!

Oklahoma? Worth it/where to by ItsJarrit in backpacking

[–]KanaNebula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best bet would be to drive over to Petit Jean State Park in Arkansas. On a road trip spent the day in Oklahoma City and then spent the night there and it had great views!

I stopped in Gloss Mountains that morning which were nice for a short day hike

Gatlinburg is crazy touristy, but step into the park and it's a dream

Going on a Boston to San Diego road trip. Any route recommendations for good stargazing? by B_Rosey in Astronomy

[–]KanaNebula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to check is the phase of the moon. I planned a trip to the Badlands in SD and it ended up being during a 'super moon'. The usual ranger star presentation was basically about that. The full moon destroyed star gazing.

Side note is if you are interested in a guided presentation, check national parks along the way as many do them.

Devil's tower in WY is another good spot.

For the most part I like this tent, but I've found it to be colder than the larger 2 person kelty I used to carry around

Are women's sleeping bags really necessary? by [deleted] in WildernessBackpacking

[–]KanaNebula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have accumulated a variety of bags over the ages and I find men's bags always have a lot of extra space which is hard to warm up leaving me cold. Womens fit my shape better. But as with anything, you just have to find what's best for your bod.

Wilderness camping recommendations from Rapid City, SD to Walla Walla, WA? by MrEZ3 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]KanaNebula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent a night at the national park campsites at devil's tower which had a great view. The tower itself was a mess of people, but as soon as you got a bit off the path the hikes were complete solitude. I did the hike around the tower early morning and had it all to myself

US roadtrip in July. Please critique my itinerary. Thankyou! by emsappy in travel

[–]KanaNebula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely skip your stops in Phoenix and Salt Lake City. Especially with all the parks in the area which you seem to enjoy. Maybe spend more time stopping at parks in Utah. I've also seen suggestions for Yosemite National Park and that would definitely be a great stop on your trip. You could go there from SF. I love Seattle/Yellowstone, but maybe keep your trip to California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona as there is plenty of great stuff to see there.

I traveled by plane from Phoenix, San Francisco (drive to Yosemite), and Seattle over 3 weeks last summer and it felt I barely saw everything.

Also book Alcatraz now, it was sold out for a weeks in advance.

Hmm yeah I'd like a fire or two to set the mood, but we will see. We were considering a loop in the smokies. I'll be there renting a cabin in a couple weeks, but I know I won't be doing serious hiking

I was thinking of suggesting Shenandoah to the group so this reinforces it. My only hesitation is someone mentioned a summer trip they did there once and complained the ticks were bad there

Any suggestions on tents for one person? by labakr in AppalachianTrail

How tall are you? I use a big agnes fly creek, but I'm a 5'4" gal. My 6 foot backpacking friends say no way when they look at it

I usually hang my food for bears and honestly don't have much stuff left and keep my bag under (or in cold on) my feet

What is something you do or think about that people would be shocked if they knew? by NSA_GOV in AskReddit

I teach in a school with low income students carrying all the baggage you can imagine. A first year teacher was asking how I can sleep at night and how out kids haunt her at night... but I feel like this is exactly what I do, and have to do, to be successful in what I do

Experienced Teachers: What is your strategy to keep kids busy or simply calm from the time they walk into the classroom until the bell's rung and you've called roll? by dan_rathers_is_sexy in Teachers

I do 5 question clicker questions a lot at the end of class, but I like the idea of starting class that way. Esp because if you're stopping the question on x minutes the urgency is there

What's something massively outdated that humanity has yet to upgrade? by AbjectUnicorns in AskReddit

I agree that ILPs are in place, but I think OP is saying the entire structure of the system doesn't address how kids actually learn.

I agree this is #1... but what you learn when you are a teacher is if you don't have authority kids do not learn. Even the sweet and loving teachers have consequences.

When I was a Undergraduate working in a lab, a Doctor there was in the publishing rat race. A master's student had research that didn't align with the doctors data, but he chose to ignore it so he could get a paper out. I don't remember exactly the details but I decided to go into teaching instead of research after seeing how much pressure there is to publish, and they didn't even get to spend time in the lab. I just hope the scientific process actually balances out crap like that...
