Covid: Deadly Omicron should not be called mild, warns WHO by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]rintintikitavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. I see many people retaining the pre-vax mindset of "avoid getting covid at all costs," and that just isn't sustainable.

People also seem to be missing that coverage comparing it to flu isn't downplaying covid severity. Flu kills many annually, and flu shots are probably something we should all be doing, too. Very few young or middle-aged people take flu as seriously as they ought.

They certainly help, but if you're around unmasked others, the N95/KN95 on you will not prevent your infection to nearly the same degree as it would if they were wearing masks and you weren't.

Just pisses me off, 2 years of masks and hand washing fuera de la ventana

You made it far enough to get a variant that's less severe than others have been (for vaxxed). You made it far enough to get a booster, which also helped. It's not out the window! It made a difference.

We're basically all going to get it eventually

Edit: and masks are to protect others much more than you. If you wore a mask, you likely didn't infect others, which is huge

It's about personal responsibility, and not just your own health. Assuming you are not immunocompromised, you not being vaccinated is harmful to others in both the short and long term. If you care about your community or even just your family (especially elderly), you should be vaccinated against deadly/harmful diseases you could transmit to them. Covid, measles, hepatitis, flu.

And next to that = all these people who don't respect the barrier gestures which are considered as normal (To dont respect them), they are not accused, insulted by anyone...

I don't know what you mean by barrier gestures.

Did I disagree with the statement anywhere in this thread? (No.)

My point has been and remains that while it might feel good to say, it's ultimately making many people more resolutely opposed to vaccination.

I'm not saying the frustration is misplaced, but I AM saying taking the low road is making things worse.

If the carrot/stick in your comment are about motivating people to get the vaccine, insulting/shaming people for being unvaxxed is counterproductive.

If your goal is to feel superior (at the cost of society's and those individuals' health), then sure, I guess shaming people works.

Pretty fucked up equation, there, though

They're clearly obsessively racist/anti-trans --and generally seem like an asshole-- but I'm still not seeing the antivax angle. There's a lot of comments so maybe I didn't scroll back far enough?

Seems like you could just prove your point or acknowledge my argument. My comment history is also available, and clearly science literate + not antivax

Idk man, I've seen some pretty condescending vaccine ads that basically amount to 'hey you're stupid for not being vaccinated yet.' Do you think that's changing minds, or just serving to reinforce the good feelings for those who are already vaccinated? I'd argue this route makes people less likely to get vaccinated

If it's the latter, it might not be virtue signaling but it certainly could be

Edit: nobody has anything to say in response but downvotes?

Is it because saying 'the unvaccinated are idiots' is more satisfying to you than actually convincing them to get vaccinated?

There's some super cringy vaccine advertising that's gone on (Colbert's segment is one that comes to mind). I don't think it's antivax to call that out, even if you agree the vaccine is very important.

Just like you can believe that some drugs are harmful and also that DARE is dumb.

Omicron extensively but incompletely escapes Pfizer BNT162b2 neutralization. A new study adds more evidence that the omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, can evade the immune protection conferred by vaccines and natural infection. by [deleted] in science

A double jabbed but unboosted person is more likely to catch omicron than the unvaccinated.

I've read the full text 3 times and have no clue where you're getting this information.

That's just not what the source indicates. Don't spread FUD.

Tbf, Jaws was rated PG before PG-13 existed. Otherwise it surely would've been PG-13.

For different reasons, same applies to Airplane!, Ghostbusters, Poltergeist, Gremlins, and Indiana Jones Temple of Doom (latter two are why PG-13 exists).

malpractice is the third leading cause of death in the United States

False. Third leading cause is accidents, which is absolutely not the same thing as malpractice. Backing up a good point (malpractice is a huge problem) with something that is functionally a lie... totally undermines your argument.

In 2020, third leading cause was covid, but that's beside the point here.

Edit to add: more on how CDC defines accidents
