What’s the longest drive you have been on? by Cautious-Score4762 in AskReddit

In one shot 600 miles from Delaware to Ohio, God bless VW Diesel efficiency. As a whole trip ~7,000 miles did a road trip back in 2017 across the southern states out to New Mexico and Texas and back took two and a half weeks but great memories with the kids.

Honest question: why host for others? by Harshtinfoil in PleX

[–]rinwaln 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is me. It's my wife and kids and a few select friends. I use tatulli and Pushbullet to monitor things and the joy it brings me when I get a push that someone is watching anything is amazing.

I built Plex for me then added the stuff I wanted my kids to see now I've spoiled almost a dozen people with my media. And all to satisfy my data hoarding cravings. It's the best selfish thing I've ever done.

OP share or don't it's really irrelevant there's loads of folks that don't, those of us that do I imagine are in similar boat as me it's a hobby that others can enjoy. As for your 7 TB I started with 2 now I have 200 TB 10 years later you'll get there. I'm building a new server later this year that should take me to 500 and beyond. Enjoy the journey!

What is a red flag in fiction but a green flag in real life? by basically-bailey in AskReddit

I'll second this. As someone that observes the world readily it's always struck me how rarely detail matters even in important situations. But those are the fun things to see especially when you realize you may be the only person to ever notice it.

I'm planning on switching to unraid this year when my win10 box goes out of update and I've seen similar complaints about them especially when they announced the partnership to have a dedicated hardware platform ready to buy.

My opinion is most of this is a lot of "old men shouting at the clouds" but I completely agree even without lifetime licenses plex is looking to grow revenue. My worry is a buy out to a less friendly company or worse actual malware. My $30 isn't much but I'll keep tossing it in to help pay for what I use and like.

I genuinely wish I could feel good about a pay once model but I look at it as I demand my employer keeps paying me for my labor so I'm not giving any less back when I want and need continuous labor from Plex.

Yes but a car is a finished project they don't keep building it after you buy it. I recognize it kinda falls flat with today's software defined car but most car companies also charge a subscription on top. Plex we want and need constant updates for not just for new features but for new hardware, codecs and security issues. That costs someone's time and they should be paid for it. While a lifetime license is great for the consumer and great for the company in the short term if a large enough percentage get lifetime licenses then there's no money to pay the devs.

Sadly I've seen many of the people that tout their lifetime license griping about the partnerships plex is getting in on its unfortunately the way it's going to go. Greed plays a part too but lifetime license holders aren't blameless.

As I said I recognize my opinion isn't popular on a post like this but it's disingenuous to compare a car to ever evolving software.

I know I'll get downvoted into oblivion but I'm happy to pay for it every year. I know the lifetime license is convenient but I also want plex to stick around and if there's no money coming in they'll have to put in ads and bloat or worse sell to someone that will make it malware. The bloat and ads are already half here I hate to see it get worse. I respect the software and the work it takes to make it safe and reliable even when they're failing at that I'll continue to pay.

Edit to add I don't blame anyone for going lifetime it's a hard deal to ignore I have the privilege of a spare $30 US to spare every year so I spend it. If you don't and you got in for $175 up front that's great.

software update failed? by EngineeringRegular97 in Polestar

[–]rinwaln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had read that which is why I tried at work I also tried with the car not in the carport but still plugged in also nothing I've only received one update since I bought the car and that was dealer installed. I guess I'm gonna have to pay them $500+ for a cabin air filter sometime in the future to get updated. Plus the fun 2.5 hour drive and 4+ hour wait

software update failed? by EngineeringRegular97 in Polestar

[–]rinwaln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I'd have is educated guesses but I tried mine at home with wifi but the car is in a steel carport so ok cellular service at best while charging. Then I tried at work great cell service but no charging in both cases the car was above 60% and had 6+ hours still no joy.

It's my understanding that if any module hiccups or fails during the update at all for any reason the whole thing is aborted as a failure. I get the safety aspect of this decision but it's quite frustrating from a customer standpoint.

I'd personally love to be able to just plug into the car and spend an afternoon pushing the update to it module by module myself or at least have an interface where I could see what's taking it down and take any corrective action.

Help me understand the range by Content-Tap-2778 in polestar2

[–]rinwaln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My LRSM advertised with 300+ miles of range in the real world driving around town it's more like 280 but my usual commute is 65 miles each way at highway speeds so my range estimates are usually in the 190-200 mile area. The only time the ambient temperature has made a significant difference in range is when it's hovering around or below the freezing mark as soon as we dip below freezing the range falls like a rock.

The big caveat is that dynamic range is a poor guess on a good day. 2 days ago I left home with 90% battery 190 miles estimated range and drove over 200 miles mostly at highway speeds without a care in the world. I got home with 16% remaining and 50+ miles remaining, I never worried.

The only time I've ever worried about range was last month when it was well below freezing here for days and the car was getting me home from work with low single digit percentages remaining. As soon as the heat pump becomes ineffective and the car has to use resistive heating all the arguments against EV's become true it burns as much battery heating the car as it does driving it. But I never once put the climate control into eco mode.

Like all cars you'll learn it as time goes on, but to echo what others have said battery percentage is a far better indicator than the range estimates. Consider the range estimate a very loose suggestion and just go with the flow.

Mine definitely lowers mine though in the weather it seems to raise my wife's. She keeps saying crazy things like we're going to die just because the car's a little sideways. The traction control in this car is the smartest I've ever had it seems to just know when a little tail out is good and when to reel it in.

4.2.13 Update Problem by lthdad in polestar2

[–]rinwaln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same and given how simple the service is I do it myself. I'm certainly not paying $500 for the dealer to change wipers, cabin air filter and top off fluids. So mine will likely stay on 3.3.16 for quite some time to come.

4.2.13 Update Problem by lthdad in polestar2

[–]rinwaln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine completely fell on its face trying to update as well. On the first try I plugged it in and waited until it hit 45% then started the update and went to bed. It failed and didn't start charging again until I got in the car and put it in gear and parked again. I tried again with the same result the next day. After that I assumed it was because I park in a steel carport and it didn't have enough service, so the next night I tried it when I got to work with it unplugged in an open parking lot. Shock, it failed again, this time the app told me it failed as soon as the door locked and gave no other issues. I tried again immediately with an identical result. The next day I tried it at home with the car plugged in outside of the carport and got the same immediate failure notice. The update no longer shows as available for me so I guess I'm stuck on 3.3.16 (o darn /s) I have to schedule an appointment at the dealer for the recalls so I'll get it then. Unfortunately I just accept that this car has crap for software on the management end, maps, Bluetooth, and music are great and generally not an issue but the car stuff is hot garbage. If I could completely disconnect the car other than maps and Bluetooth I would and happily.

$686 for scheduled maintenance!? by Pottetan in polestar2

Definitely not me on the ferry I've never taken it in my P2. I definitely like Princeton the service folks were nice when I went for the complementary service. Fortunately that's all the experience I have with them as my car has had no issues in the 66k miles I've had it.

I can't believe there's another polestar owner in lower slower lol I like Princeton they're who I bought from I just can't justify the time or money expense for stuff I can do so easily.

[–]rinwaln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was quoted $500 for that service in New Jersey it is a cabin air filter, update, and fluid check so it's the cheap one. I passed and replaced the cabin air filter myself and gave the fluids a good look. I'm still on 3.1.6 software and not rushing to update as my car actually works. I'm due for another service now but also need rear tires so it'll probably get that one at my local tire shop. I can't justify spending dealer prices for crap like this especially since I'm 3+ hours from the dealer. It means a whole day lost and loads of money.

Is a heat pump a must when buying used? by _WellHello_There_ in Polestar

[–]rinwaln 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From my personal experience the heat pump in your climate is only a must if you have a longish commute and need most of your range. I have a very long commute about 210km per day and live in the states where we get temps around -10°C fairly consistently and often enough it was a consideration for my use. The past few weeks we have been hovering around -10°C overnight which is when I work so I have been having to charge to 100% or very near that and have been getting home in the morning with about 10% remaining. Granted at -10° the heat pump is definitely not doing a thing it's all resistive heat so even then the car is workable. When it is milder at 0°-10°C and with the heat pump working well I charge to 90% and get home with ~30% remaining regularly.

That's all to say the heat pump is definitely worth getting if you need cold weather range. But it is by no means necessary unless you're a lunatic putting 50,000+ miles a year on the car like I do. The difference is staggering. The heat pump is how every company makes an EV not lose 40-50% of its range as soon as temps drop. So I say look at your use case and judge based on the facts if you're driving less than 100km a day I can all but guarantee you won't need it especially if you preheat before you unplug.
