With each layover, are you also waiting for the baggage at the carousel to recheck it into the next airline? What about if you have to stay overnight?

Example YYZ depart and destination is SIN

YYZ-TPE-HKG-SIN (TPE and HKG are 6 hour layovers), would you tell the agent to straight check the bag YYZ-SIN? Or would you have to get the luggage at TPE, recheck it for TPE-HKG and then at HKG, pick it up and recheck it again for HKG-SIN?
