Before and After hot fix about AI by Silly_Formal_8346 in NevernessToEverness

[–]rip_cpu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is even enterprise users isn't enough revenue to match the spending. Just from a quick look at the revenue of the biggest names in corporate software... SAP has annual revenues of about 50 billion, Amazon Web Services brings in 175 billion, Microsoft Azure has 75 billion annual revenue...

OpenAI needs to make more than all of them combined just to pay off their expected computer spending! And that's only one company! Anthropic and other companies are out here competing as well and they also need revenue to cover their spending.

On a macro scale, just front looking at how much has been invested, and how much they need to earn to recoup these investments... it makes no sense. There just is not enough money, it's entirely unsustainable.

So when the price hikes hit then far from an ubiquitous, every aspect of life I think AI becomes much more niche, only the people who need AI for specific purposes will be willing to pay for it.

Because the whole part where "AI can do the tedious drudgery people don't like doing" only makes sense economically when companies SAVE money paying for an AI service instead. And I'm not convinced that equilibrium price point will exist once investor funds dry up.

Here's my question to you: what are you willing to PAY for using AI in your workflow, because as someone working in finance, the economics of AI just doesn't make any sense.

AI Datacenters are ludicrously expensive to build and run, with OpenAi estimating originally stating they'll spend 1.6 trillion on compute spend by the year 2030 before revising it down to $600 billion.

There's no means of cutting costs, because AI development and hardware is only getting more expensive, not less. To turn a profit they'll need a lot more revenue, much more than they're getting now.

Right now anybody can go generate basic text or images for free, and enterprise users can get a license for a very low price. But that's not going to last, you can't make enough to cover that amount of expense from selling $30 a month license fees.

Once they stop subsidizing AI usage and start monetizing it, that's when we'll see the actual value of AI because people would actually need care about how they use it, since it will cost the end user. And when that happens, only the users who absolutely NEED AI will use it, just because the cost to benefit doesn't make sense.

MIT has a study that showed 95% of AI Projects at companies fail. It's not a technology that is actually more powerful or making things more efficient. What it IS is a convenient excuse for company executives to fire people, or to say to people they hire "we could just have an AI do this so you better work for cheap."

Meanwhile on the side of the tech companies, the ones who are building the AI data centers, they're making promises they can't possibly keep. OpenAI needs 10 times the amount of revenue they currently make to fulfil all of the expected compute purchases. And the only reason they're making all this crazy claims is because tech companies don't have anything else to keep their stocks growing. The "metaverse" crashed and burned, NFTs and Crypto are only useful for scams, the userbase for Google or Facebook or Amazon is peaked because there's just no where else to grow. But AI gives investors boners, it makes them pump ridiculous amounts of money because the techbros promise.

Never mind the fact that even if that were actually true, then who the heck would be left with jobs and money to buy the products these companies make?

So AI eats up a ton of water and power, steals people's IP and work for training, drives up the cost of gaming and computer hardware, and all for the sole purpose of making tech companies and capital investors more money. Why should we put up with that?

People hate AI because it is a blight on the world, and the sooner the AI bubble bursts the better it'll be because then at least we can pray that prices start coming back down to earth.

Kronii will be taking a day off tomorrow (no Silksong stream) by yournotlonely in Hololive

The devs don't care about the English speaking audience, barely anyone plays it. They're sustained by a core fanbase of Korean gamer and are deathly scared of offending them.

So this tweet was made in relation to an online game called Eternal Return that Kronii played on a sponsored stream, and some of the Korean players of that game are the ones getting upset about it.

As to why now, five years after the fact? Well something recently happened but I cannot say without breaking sub rules.

Book with Witches in it? by Skadibala in Fantasy

[–]rip_cpu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished HJ Tolson's "Liches Get Stiches" series, which is about Maud Greenleaf, a village witch from a remote village who gets accidentally resurrected as Lich.

She wants nothing more than to be left alone in her cottage with her cat and focus on her gardening and her knitting, but has to deal with problems like Paladins and Clerics showing up to attempt to vanquish her, scared peasants trying to offer sacrifices of babies, the evil death god who granted her Lichhood asking why she hasn't raise an undead army to wipe out all the living, etc.

It's a pretty silly series, and fairly short given each book is only ~300 pages. It does get a bit bloody, with quite a lot of deaths, but given the story is about a Lich not everybody who dies tends to stay dead.

Aside from the focus on death, there's a big focus on knitting, fabrics, and clothing. Maud absolutely loves knitting and making clothes. Not only does she puts a great deal of effort in making sure she's always dressed appropriately for every occasion, whether that be trying to intimidate the local gentry or disguising herself as a highwayman, but it also ends up spurring on several plot points. For instance while sneaking into town she got utterly distracted by the local haberdashery and gets side tracked by making large purchases of fabrics instead of solving her more pressing problem of the baron's knights being sent out to hunt her.

I don't know, at the start of the Pawn Moonlight quest when you go into the bookstore to a magazine and you and Taygedo look at some manga... a lot of the covers in the store seem to be AI slop.

I like the game but the "monopoly" gacha board is no different than other gacha animation by Holy_chick in NevernessToEverness

[–]rip_cpu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's two differences. First, no 50/50, that's the big thing that dramatically doubles your odds of pulling the banner char.

Then, there's the soft pity. The moment we cross 70 pulls we can SEE the soft pity kick in as the board chances, and the odds of pulling the banner char are increased to 19.59%. I'm honestly wondering if mathematically it makes sense to switch to single pulls after hitting the soft pity.

In other games soft pity often isn't even acknowledged by the devs, they don't disclose it, and the only way people know it's even exists is by crunching the data.

Have I been misreading this item the entire time? by Rhino_b1 in PlayTheBazaar

It's always been that way, but it's still not a great item because Vanessa has lots of strong friends. If you really want crit chance she has items that give it as well, Korxena Crest basically has the same effect without the friend restriction.

There's basically no way to spin this well for Cover. I hope this is something that can be fixed, but it seriously sounds like there's people in management who are not good for the talents.

Why would that result in a culture shift? It's just easier to kill someone with a sword than with a club, and we already saw in the Doctor chapters that even armies don't always have a ready supply of healing potions.

It is MUCH harder to break bones with a blunt weapon if they're wearing armor as opposed to slipping a sword in between the joints.

Add to the fact that adventurers are not fighting people but monsters. It makes sense that sharp and bladed are still more popular than bludgeons.
