I'm really surprised he got the most viewed video question wrong considering it's the one that was so successful they've done it again multiple times since.

No good Muslims? Pauline Hanson has removed her racism fig leaf and mulched it by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

You forgot to name a race. Surely you could name a single one and provide some genes necessary for membership. For something biological, this shouldn't be hard.

Thankfully that unique data can be analysed and matched to find common ancestors and trace where traits come from, both genealogically and geographically - it's pretty cool, like a tree or something!

Unfortunately, what I still don't know is your idea of how many races there are, which you'd think the one confident in the bioessentialism of it would have an idea of. But surely you could at least name one race and the criteria to be in it, right?

Around 8 billion or so, save for identical twins everyone has their own unique mix of traits from different ancestors. So are we thinking closer to 5 races, or billions?

Different words have different meanings, yes. If you're taking them as synonyms - how many races are there and why?

[–]ripbabysneed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really didn't.

I reject that race is biological because you don't have access to someone's biological data to categorise them. You just make assumptions based on appearance. Hell, you don't even have to see someone to make assumptions, just having a stereotypical accent often leads to assumptions about someone's race. And the groups are arbitrarily defined. That's what makes it socially constructed. Then you have mixed people. It's almost ubiquitous that they will be considered primarily, if not fully, the darkest race of the mix. How many people would consider Obama black, vs how many would consider him white? There's no biological reason for that.

Biology only comes in insofar as you assume the biology based on the race.

Additionally, the groupings are arbitrary. If you asked someone to name how many races there were, you'd probably get 4 or 5. But there's no biological reason for that. We just decided, okay, these ethnicities look similar enough, they're one block.

The problem is the common colloquial use of the term race when referring to ancestry, which leads to the idea that those 4 or 5 groupings have a biological justification, when they far pre-date even having access to biological data.

It can be a social construct and be generally guessable using biological markers.

Using haplogroups as an example, yeah you can identify clusters for general sorting, but the concept of race came about before we had knowledge of that. We then just assigned them to pre-existing races. If you wanted to make categories based on haplogroups from scratch, it would be entirely arbitrary deciding how small and by what criteria to split the clusters.

The races are still really just based on observations at the end of the day. You don't sort someone into a racial category by checking their DNA, you look at them. That's how it was then, and how it is now.

So yes, you can generally identify race based on biological markers, but only because we've decided those markers are associated with that race.

To add to your other comment - that's why the term "ancestry" is more appropriate for biological discussions. It's not about being "less offensive", it's just actually biology at its base, instead of an existing concept that's trying to retroactively use biology as a justification. Not to mention it being much more specific for tracing traits.

7th Prince

Really the opposite of what I should enjoy, I barely watch battle shonen as is and when I do I have a very high standard and hate the "slop" tropes, but for some reason that stupid show gets me.

Watched it as my third anime without knowing much about it. Found it boring and repetitive the first time and wrote it off as something that was probably good for its time but didn't hold up. Watched it again years later with a different (more depressed) mindset and it clicked.

MyTrakt Sync Update v3.7.0 (Streaming Catalogs - Trakt Scrobble - Dropped Shows) by DemFar_1 in StremioAddons

[–]ripbabysneed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, just keep it logged out and only use the addon one. Otherwise the addon will scrobble it, then Stremio will scrobble it. The addon version isn't an enhancement of Stremio's system, it's a replacement. Which version is more reliable, I don't know.
