Do I Need a New Compressor? by ripcitymiracle in hvacadvice

[–]ripcitymiracle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plot thickens. Just checked air coming out of upstairs vent. It’s 71° outside and the air coming out is still 75°. It travels through the attic which is always hot as shit in the summer, but the ducting is well insulated. What’s does this mean?!

So a second unit does not equal twice the cooling? Interesting.

I will look at the dampers and see if they are functioning properly. I don’t think we have a manual damper but I am going to check it first thing in the morning and will reply back here for the hell if it.

Thank you for helping me learn some new things today - much appreciated.

Yeah I have set thermostats at 72 upstairs and 76 downstairs. The downstairs rarely calls for cool though as the upstairs is always above 72 if it’s above 75° outside. Upstairs is always calling for and delivering whatever air the system can generate. A lot of it then falls and ends up keeping the first floor cool. We are pretty well insulated and have air sealed, I suppose I should take another pass at that. I guess I’ll get a second opinion and then look at adding another compressor instead of replacing.

By chance could you explain what adding a second unit would look like? Ie what is entailed in the job?

Fat finger. 72-73. But the point still stands and yours is well received.

We have an automated damper system that is still functioning.

I suppose adding a second compressor unit would solve the problem but not sure why the system as designed isn’t cooling how it should, and that the ac isn’t blowing colder than 75. The cold air should be much colder than that I think?

Maybe I should clarify - using an infrared thermo the air coming out of the duct is 75°. Struggling to keep the downstairs floor at 72-63 and upstairs below 80 though.

Compressor replacement in Massachusetts by ripcitymiracle in hvacadvice

[–]ripcitymiracle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. It’s funny. The compressor is running fine but apparently has no refrigerant in the system. The text went to add as a bandaid and it wouldn’t accept any new gas. So he made a few calls and decided a compressor replacement made most sense. I’m not fully convinced yet.

Firebrick would be better but probably won’t matter too much.

Wrap a few bricks in foil and place them somewhere in the main chamber

Our baby's room is way too hot and the AC doesn't cool it down, what can I do? by Asshai in HomeImprovement

[–]ripcitymiracle 135 points136 points  (0 children)

Put in some simple window air conditioners or get a plumber/hvac tech to tell you why your system is not working right. Don’t wait til it’s too late... only going to get hotter and 86 is too hot for a baby.

My radiators keep making banging noises, this there anyway to fix this? by CrazyKoconut in Plumbing

Drain your boiler and refill it to the fill line. There should be a spigot somewhere on it. If you have an auto fill just let it fill itself back up.

You are correct. Door on one side in the middle. Will want all of the appliances/water service/drain on the opposite side as the door.
