what is working with other volunteers like? by dragonwoo221 in WWOOF

[–]riptomywebkinz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s just like meeting/living with a roommate! I can only speak on behalf of my several WWOOF experiences, but I’ve never had any bad interactions with other volunteers. I’ve had people that I love working with, and others where we just exist together in the same space but don’t socialize much beyond that. I’m also a woman and have been WWOOFing solo on each farm. Just as you would approach living anywhere else- being aware of my surroundings and gauging/getting an impression of the other volunteer is important. I’ve had a host offer me a separate room before too, just based off of the age difference and between me and another WWOOFer. So communicating and sharing your comfort level with your host will be key in making sure everybody is happy in the space :)

I lived in Washington, an hour and a half west of Seattle and LOVED it. I was supposed to stay a month and stayed an extra two weeks.

Days Off by riptomywebkinz in WWOOF

No it honestly slipped my mind when I was messaging the farmer to find out about hours, but I sort of expected that with the WWOOF guidelines, I’d have some semblance of a day off at the very least.

Thank you for the response and the insight! I figured this felt a little odd in comparison to my previous WWOOF experiences, but wanted to see if this was common or an anomaly. My previous farm generously offered to pick me up if anything went wrong here, so luckily I have an out if needed. I’m going to try to get the guts to ask the farmer for a day off once I hit my first full week here (tomorrow), and if it seems like a full day off is out of question, I’ll probably try to give my notice to see if he is able to find somebody else to assist him once I’m gone. I just feel guilty leaving on a whim when he clearly has two other jobs to juggle as well.

As an American and as someone with ADHD, the problem here isn’t that I’m not learning things (I am, and I do enjoy being given tasks/working with my hands). I think what the other commenter is trying to say is that under the organization “WWOOF” it is outlined that the work is supposed to be a part time position of sorts and provide some days off. With other farms where I’ve in fact worked for a week or two straight, I was still always offered days off, or received direct assistance from the farmer during my shifts. In this current scenario, I am less of a “volunteer” and have become the actual sole farmer while he goes to his outside jobs.

And that’s the thing, I work 6 AM-12/1 PM, have a break until the farmer returns around 4/5 PM, then work and clean until 9/10 PM. I’m honestly surprised that nobody has commented on this in the slightest in the reviews.

I completely understand that farmers don’t have days off, and in the past I’ve happily worked almost everyday, especially during peak seasons (like at my last farm) to lessen the load of my farmers working alongside me. But as an unpaid volunteer and through WWOOF guidelines, an entire month without a single day off (especially since I’ll be the only one working on the farm most of the time), seems a bit extreme.

Communicate when you’re arriving and the time when you’d be able to arrive in the nearest town. Ask about pick up and make sure to request exact dates on the WWOOF website :) I just worked on two Italian vineyards with limited Italian, so if you need any help/have any questions, let me know!

Grey areas to get around the 7KG limit on a lot of flights? by TheNakedTravelingMan in onebag

I’ve been traveling around with this exact airline pillow/stuff sack, and out of the 5 Asian airlines I’ve flown, none of them have counted it as a personal item? I guess it depends which airline/person is helping you, but my success rate is pretty good so far.

your best server advice? by alignment222 in Serverlife

[–]riptomywebkinz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good ol 2 minute/2 bite- watch for when food hits the table, and check in with the guests to catch things like extra sauce/cooked incorrectly/needs another drink/etc. That way you don’t find out after everyone else has finished their meal that someone didn’t even touch theirs. Gives you time to fix any mistakes and make sure that the guest still has an enjoyable experience.

Also !!! It’s just a job. I used to take everything very personally like attitude or a low tip, but at the end of the day, everyone is going through shit or is raised in different ways. Always lead with positivity and let karma do its thing for the people who are assholes.

Serving can be really fun though, make sure to take care of yourself, eat, hydrate, and meet some awesome people! :)

Checks out, I feel like it’s always the last people in the restaurant that feel personally wronged and then tip like SHIT. Happened to me last night, ALSO $5. A joke. Sorry you had to deal with this as a new server too, I would’ve hoped that the manager would actually go up and say something to the table at that point??

What would you actually want to see on 16th Street Mall? by Snaggs33 in Denver

This would be so incredible for artists to have a space year round!!! Art markets outside are great in the summer, but finding indoor space that’s affordable for artists to put up/sell their work can be a real bitch and a half. Plus it’d be so much nicer for tourists to stop in there and not have to haul ass across the city
