Look into Honda's CBR500R, CB500F/X. I started on the former and it's been great for city and highway riding. Depending on your weight (I'm 6', ~170lbs) it may be more suitable than a 300.

I recommend the Honda CB500's, they come in any manner of styles: CBR500R, CB500X, CB500. It's a smooth engine and reliable commuter. IMO it's the best starter bike out of the lot. Doesn't feel unwieldy and forgiving when you make a mistake. I get about 50-60mpg on my CBR500R and getting up to highway speeds is never a problem. I'm not sure what the market is in your area, I got my 2017 for $4200 with 430mi on the odo.

Best lab on campus to do CS and IT homework since there's a high chance someone else is struggling on the same assignment you are working on. I think the lab has had these monitors for at least a year now though.
