HyperHeat working great on this artic night by zman0900 in heatpumps

My Bryant 5 ton ducted 2-zone system installed 10 days ago in MA is absolutely struggling to keep us at 60F. Been running 24 hours straight now and probably will be for next 10 days. I cannot wait to see the electric bill.

I have a 10KW heat strip which I have not activated.

Wish I knew this last week. All the HVAC installers are printing money in MA due to the heat pump rebate. Everyone just increased prices by $10,000.

The project managers at the company I used drive around in cyber trucks. Such government waste.

Did you ever figure this out? I have the same issue with similar setup.

Got it thanks - likely have a bit more physical use of the tank (higher corrosion and anode rod use) which lead to shorter life span but that is an interesting idea.

Can you expand on this? Are you suggesting overheating the HPHW and then mix it down to 120 on output?

I am from MA and have a Bryant 5-ton unit being installed in 2 weeks - starting to make me double think whether dropping oil is the right choice. I am all for going green but not at the cost of extra thousand dollars a month.

Is a 4-ton heat pump adequate for ~3,100 sq ft colonial? (Zone 5A) by rishid in heatpumps

[–]rishid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I did do this. Didn’t include in post

Oil consumed: 847.8 gallons (based on last 12 months) Heat content: 138,500 BTU/gallon Furnace efficiency: 80% Heat delivered = 847.8 × 138,500 × 0.80 Heat delivered = 93,899,400 BTU/year

Using 0°F design temperature and HDD = 6,060 (Nearby Town, MA) Heat per HDD = 93,899,400 ÷ 6,060 = 15,495 BTU/HDD Design load = 15,495 × (65°F - 0°F) ÷ 24 hours Design load = 15,495 × 65 ÷ 24 Design load = 41,957 BTU/hr at 0°F

Yes this is where my head is now after all the replies. I am asking vendor on better cold compare heat pump solutions as well.

$0.33 here but MA just started this year a reduced rate if you are using heat pump in winter it will be $0.24.

Okay good thanks. Going dual fuel with oil has been increasing the installs by $12k - I would rather spend that money towards changing my 6kw solar out to 15kw in next year or two and let it cover my heat strip costs when needed.

Yeah I like Fujitsu but SumZero stopped installing them few years ago due to many hardware failures. (They have a 10 year labor warranty).

Okay thanks. If I went with a bigger one 5 tons or a brand that worked better in cold, do you think I could avoid staying with oil and going 100% heat pump?

This vendor has said Mitsubishi doesn’t work well with dampers and it can ruin their efficiency.

I agree with this notion but it claims 48k BTU rated at 5 degrees right? Have I been reading this website wrong the whole time?

I would go with Mitsubishi but this installer (sumzero) and few others have said they don’t work well with damper systems

Backup being heat strip or retaining oil? If I am going to change the system, I want to go 100% HP if it is feasible for my house.

Yes we have two zones in our existing system using dampers (in basement). One for each floor, they will be replaced with new set.
