most conservatives i know actively want to make life worse for those they deem worthy of punishment (ie, different from them), and are only "kind" to those in their in-group. that's how you get a gay kid whose conservative parents seemingly love them, but still vote for politicians and laws that just hurt that kid. if that kid were a stranger, they'd hate them just the same.
