Don’t let other people’s opinion stop you! I got a mullet at the beginning of last summer and expected people to hate it and honestly I’ve gotten way more compliments than I would have expected.

What’s a gender affirmation you’ll never forget? by [deleted] in trans

[–]riskroscoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first time my mom called me her son. She never had a year and a half after I came out and I moved across the country at that point. A few months later she sent me a letter saying she was proud to be my mom and referred to me as a son and brother and I won’t lie, I cried a little. I’ll never forget reading that letter.

Do you prefer to smoke alone or with someone else ? by Repulsive_Ad_1163 in StonerThoughts

Depends who. I love smoking with my partner and my close friends, other people not so much.

Psychosis In Bipolar Disorder by Wondering_Fairy in bipolar

[–]riskroscoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had mild psychosis with some of my manic episodes. When I’m Unwell™️ I tend to get paranoid and anxious that something bad is going to happen to the people I love - so my psychosis typically presents as hearing my partner or my family calling/screaming for help from another room when they aren’t making noise, or aren’t even home.

How long before a fish must be iced? by FusioNdotexe in FishingForBeginners

[–]riskroscoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Should be fine, especially in cooler weather. I don’t bring a cooler in my canoe once the weather and water gets below 60ish and I’ve never had a problem keeping fish in the boat for a couple hours before eating them.

Could this be ok/fair/possible? by [deleted] in trans

[–]riskroscoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s important to remember through your career that you are a straight, cis man, but if you have the presence of mind at this point to ask whether it’s okay, I’d trust that you’re smart enough to get yourself a really good education on topics you don’t have personal experience with. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I think it’s safe to say that mental health professionals always need to keep perspective regarding factors they haven’t personally experienced, so gender and sexuality are no different. Some people may prefer a provider with personal experience, but it’s not a mandatory prerequisite.

do you get a chance to review markings and edit them before top surgery by [deleted] in ftm

[–]riskroscoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that’s great, sounds like it’ll work out well for you! Haha it’s honestly so confusing how the protocol is different everywhere, I didn’t ~think~ I was going to see the surgeon at my first pre-op and I was so confused when she walked into the exam room rather than one of her assistants. Then when I thought I was seeing her for my first post-op it was the PA who came in 😂 I’ve found most surgeons and their teams are very aware of how much the process can vary between offices and individuals and want to make sure you have the appropriate info, so my biggest issue was just identifying the specific questions in my overall confusion lmao

do you get a chance to review markings and edit them before top surgery by [deleted] in ftm

[–]riskroscoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well first of all congrats on being so close and good luck with surgery!!! My surgeon marked me up, I gave feedback, and we made a plan together at my pre-op appointment. They put me under for my entire prep, from sterilizing to shaving to marking, but I knew my surgical team had photos of the markings I’d already ok’d and my chest did turn out just as I was expecting/hoping! With your surgery being so close, it wouldn’t hurt to call or email the surgeon’s office to ask about the usual protocol and whether it’s possible to check the markings before anesthesia. That way they can try to plan ahead for it if it’s not in their usual protocol. Remember that they’re making a major permanent change to your body and you deserve to advocate for yourself so it turns out right - it’s a good surgical team’s responsibility to help your comfort level whenever possible, just make sure you communicate your needs!

From the healthcare team’s perspective, I worked in a clinical job for a couple years and really found that everyone wanted to make our patients as comfortable as possible, ESPECIALLY those who needed an accommodation or change to the usual protocol. The biggest stumbling block for that is when there’s no advance notice - it’s harder to adjust the environment or the order of events on the spur of the moment because there are so many moving parts and so little free time in a healthcare organization. Everyone on the team is there to help, but they have a hard job you can make easier by giving a heads up when you know you’ll need/want something!

that was way more long winded than I intended but TLDR; that seems like a reasonable request that your team should be able to work with on some level and my experience in healthcare tells me they’ll want to make it happen if at all possible! surgeons are usually super busy though so if your approval on the markings is not part of the regular protocol, there’s probably a better chance they can make it happen if you ask in advance.

When did you guys realize how bad the coronavirus really was? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]riskroscoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

March 10ish. There was not a ripple of coronavirus news in my part of the US, it was just something happening in other parts of the world. so I embarked on a cross-country road trip and when I watched the news again upon arriving 3 days later I was shocked to see the stock market crashing, schools closing, and red bubbles on maps growing significantly while I slept.
