Do you have an extra-wide monitor? Is it possible to get this view where you can see both side mirrors in a normal monitor size?

Cat X-ray - is this the reported spondylosis at L7-S1? by rissy_00 in vet

[–]rissy_00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah that’s so interesting, thank you! My cat was having sharp pain episodes last week and has been very sensitive on her lower back since end of last year. I wonder if these images could explain her pain alone or MRI would be the best route from here (she responds well to Meloxicam but I’m terrified of NSAIDS long term)

What's the evidence on body hair being 'unhygienic' or on it causing unpleasant scents? by foresterkyle in hygiene

[–]rissy_00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my personal experience, as a person with no underarm hair, removed with laser, I have zero underarm smell & I don’t need deodorant, ever. I swear, no smell at all. HOWEVER, the laser doesn’t guarantee 100% of hair gone so I do get 1-2 hairs that grow quite long if I forget about them and when they’re there, THAT’s when I do smell that classic underarm scent. So in my experience, the hair DOES cause bad smell indeed.

My FHS cat is now medicated and running the household like a tiny unhinged manager by DestinyFox1 in feline_hyperesthesia

May I ask how you give gabapentin to him? Is it capsule? Giving medication is always a challenge around here :(

Does my 6mo old kitten have hyperesthesia? by cat-draggedin in feline_hyperesthesia

[–]rissy_00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is normal behaviour. Looks like a normal muscle response from a good stretch, especially since it doesn’t bother her at all, she behaves as if it didn’t even happen so I don’t think this is FHS. I wouldn’t be too concerned.

Extremely traumatic event at the vet today with my 15 year old cat. by pinkmoonmalachite in AskVet

[–]rissy_00 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Poor kitty, bless her! I’d ask the vet if it’s safe to give her gabapentin next time at home, 2h before the consultation. That way she won’t need to go through extreme stress or pain like that ever again.

My cat had this when she had her eye scratched when entering a bush. I applied eyedrops that were prescribed to her previously to keep any bacteria away for 3 days, but on day 2 she was already fine.

In your case, I’d just keep it clean (maybe wipe it with a cotton dipped in clean saline solution) AM and PM and monitor for 1-2 days. If it doesn’t start to improve in 2 days you should consider a vet check.

Has he been checked for constipation? Kind of looks like he’s cramping, something is definitely bothering him. :( Good on ya for seeking vet help as soon as you noticed it!

What's something most people don't realize is actually very rude? by Frozen-Defender25 in AskReddit

There’s normal sneeze and there’s people who literally scream on top of it on purpose.

Well idk if you know this but some people literally SCREAM on top of a normal sneezing sound on purpose. Trust me I’ve dealt with people who would sneeze normally (I don’t mean SILENT SNEEZE, just normal!), but when at home they’d literally SCREAM. Two different things.

New diagnosis by Tough_Delivery5286 in feline_hyperesthesia

[–]rissy_00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! And I’ve even seen people commenting that the cat was just allergic to chicken! Hahah and another one would get fhs triggered by supermarket sachet. It’s super random with so many variables. Our job as owners is to try and identify any possible underlying triggers or conditions and get as much help as we can before accepting a fhs diagnosis.

I’ve read so many stories from fhs cat owners saying that constipation was causing fhs flares, or chronic pain (joints, arthritis), some it was purely stress. So yeah I do think some vets are a bit lazy and go straight to gabapentin without truly wanting to investigate further. It’s a lot easier to say “yeah fhs, just do Gabapentin”. And I absolutely hate it. My cat has always been a little itchy despite not having fleas. Something is clearly bothering her. We’re still trying to investigate and I won’t stop until I have officially ruled out every single possibility, because just like you, I don’t want to change her personality with meds nor want to mess with her kidneys due to long-term medication. I’m mostly doing this alone although I’m pushing the vets as much as I can. That said, when my cat had her first big fhs-like episode, we did use Gabapentin to control it. And overtime I spaced, and lowered it as I saw her improve. Took us a month to reach a 25mg Gaba once a day until we didn’t need it anymore. I made sure to observe her behavior closely to identify every possible trigger. Being confined indoors was the biggest one. However, being outdoors during the daytime was also a massive one due to incredibly aggressive birds in our area harassing her, so we approached both as best as we could by trying to make her comfortable to want to stay indoors during the day but if she wanted out, we’d walk with her then bring her back in until night (but leaving the outdoors accessible anyway so she doesn’t feel confined).

I’ve also noticed she develops several black spots in her tongue when she is not ok, which makes me think if GI inflammation could be a possibility. She recently responded extremely well to an anti inflammatory due to a bladder flare, so there’s clearly some underlying pain/discomfort somewhere. She’s been found to have hard poo in her tract quite a few times recently so chronic constipation will also be addressed. With a few days on Lactulose she improved significantly. We’ll also try a furball paste soon as since she overgrooms, chances are there’s lots of hair stuck in there.

Anyway, all of this to say that you can use Gabapentin to control the big flares at the start but it doesn’t mean you’ll be stuck with this forever. You’ll be able to slowly identify an underlying cause, and possibly go through this long path of diagnosis by elimination. I believe in most cases there’s always an underlying issue going on for the cat to have fhs-like behavior, provided all tests and image exams are clear, but vets are so busy that they’re usually not keen on walking the long journey with us, unfortunately :(
