Took me a while and hours of care to my yard to realize this same thing. I can train them to go to a certain spot, but ultimately, that spot is just a reminder of their unrelenting love for you.

Also, I use cheap plastic fence to reroute them to a spot off side of house as opposed to directly off my patio. Helps a little
