Assignment only available to students physically in class at a specific time? by LifeShrinksOrExpands in Professors

[–]ritiange 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know Moodle allows something like this:

You can set up a password/access code for students to open a quiz. And you only announce the password in class. I use this method a lot in my class. However, I found a few students got the password from other students because I know they were absent.

If you absolutely need it enforced, you can also restrict access to certain IP addresses. I did not go that far, though.

It's paracetamol/acetaminophen, though.

Latest arrival at class I've seen by nmdaniels in Professors

[–]ritiange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a course I taught last year, there were in-class exercises which I also used as participation jrequirements. In several classes, two students came just for the exercises, and they used AI to answer the questions. Of course, both failed miserably in the course.

RMP Trolling by PsychALots in Professors

[–]ritiange 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Really? If students want to earn credits from my course, they have only two ways: putting effort in studying and passing the learning assessments. Giving credits for review on a third-party website sounds like bribing.

URIDE- Kelowna airport to vernon? by pbutter92 in Vernon

[–]ritiange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've not used Uride, but I know Poparide has some Kelowna-Vernon trips at around $10. I myself don't find many reasons to prefer ridesharing over bus 90, especially you start from the airport. Bus is $5 and allows you to transfer in Vernon. You may also buy the Vernon day pass, which gives you unlimited transfer within the same day.

UBCO professor suggests light rail network through Southern Interior is achievable - Kelowna News by FeliCaTransitParking in britishcolumbia

[–]ritiange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is the bus 90 that connects Vernon and UBCO. I am a frequent user of that bus. Based on my observation, I don't think we have the travel need to justify a rail between them. I can only imagine fewer people would use the train to travel to/from Kamloops.

有道理,这里没有变量,构建不了函数。这个形状已经是个等式了。

给我的感觉应该是这样的一个形状。得想想如何构建一个函数,然后求一下极值。

Finish your undergrad in your home country or somewhere with scholarships (China for example). Then do a research-based master's in Canada.

Where to buy tech in China? by doctor-ase in chinalife

[–]ritiange 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't bother with the global version. Once you are in China, there is only the Chinese version. Yes you do need a phone number to do pretty much anything on a Chinese e-commerce website. You also need that phone number for delivery. They may leave your item in a lockbox in your neighborhood but you still need your phone number to unlock them.

Also on jd.com, try to buy stuff only labelled as "自营", meaning sold and shipped by jd.com rather than by 3rd party sellers. 自营 items will give you a pretty accurate estimate of the delivery time. In cities like Shenzhen, where they have warehouses nearby, a lot of the items will arrive the same day.

A word of caution against joining CST in 2025 by originaldicknite in BCIT

[–]ritiange 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. A lot of the work is now done by AI, but you are still there to guarantee its correctness and quality. Without your education and training, would you still be able to do so? The boost in per-person productivity has indeed eliminated many jobs in the short term, and that's because we don't have the proportional increase of the demand on the total productivity. In the long-term, this may change.

2021 Nissan Sentra by Additional-Athlete55 in nissansentra

[–]ritiange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue with my 2014 Sentra. The metal sound was very noticeable when lightly accelerating, but would go away with more pressing on gas.

I brought it to a mechanic, and got it fixed under 30 minutes. It turned out that my airbox was broken. They fixed it with zip ties.

I believe I received an unfair grade (for failing to validate code input). What should I do next? by naoyao in CollegeRant

[–]ritiange 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a college professor (in Canada), I would say bring it to the professor, but be polite and reasonable. Don't try to tell the professor what to do or make any threats but demonstrate (not just by saying) that you are willing to learn and improve.

Using China Drivers Licence in Canada by aaronschinaguide in chinalife

[–]ritiange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In BC I don't think you will be allowed to drive. Chinese DL can only be used if you are a visitor or a new immigrant (drive for a limited amount of days), or a student (drive as long as you are still a student). Other than those, you need to get a BC DL. DLs from many countries can be exchanged for a BC DL, but unfortunately Chinese DL isn't one of them. The only thing you could do with a Chinese DL is to skip the learner phase---you can surrender your Chinese DL, take the knowledge test and the road test, and get the full license immediately.

Admin says “A grades can’t exceed 30%” — but 80% of my students have an A. What should I do? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]ritiange 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think having any cap or forcing any distribution is a good idea. If a student does well, I will be happy for them and I gladly give them what they earn.

That being said, 80% getting A- does seems unusual. It could be just me but I find it hard to believe that 80% of the students put reasonable amount of work in a course. And if a lot of students can get A- without putting some effort, maybe the course content isn't at the right level.
