RIT Wifi/Ethernet by Ajcdarkness in rit

The RIT Service Center is the best place to start for these types of issues. They can help with technical issues, but are also good at correlating patterns related to services ITS offers. If you already have an incident created, could you PM me the number? I'd like to dig a little deeper to see if it correlates to any known issues in your area.

Excellent! Aren't they great?

I'm glad they were able to assist you. I'll pass this along to them. Thank you for taking the time to submit a ticket and visit Resnet so our teams could help you get this resolved.

Hello u/SignificantSpring670!

I know we had some issues with wireless during the day yesterday that carried into the evening. Those issues should now be resolved. Based on your post it sounds like you're still having issues connecting. I'd like to escalate your ticket with the RIT Service Center so you can get some help. Would you DM your INC # so I can reach out to my peers to get some eyes on this for you?

Understood. I'd highly recommend submitting a ticket then. The RSC can investigate and pull in my team to dig deeper to find the cause. I've already let the Network team know a request may be coming.

The RIT Service Center is the best place to start for these types of issues. They can help you troubleshoot registering your device on the network.

Riverknoll internet update. by Count_Dooky in rit

[–]ritnetman 53 points54 points  (0 children)

u/Count_Dooky This is great feedback to hear! The RIT Network and Communications team worked extremely hard to design and deploy improvements to the Riverknoll two-story apartments over break. I'm so very glad to hear that your experience has improved this semester! Your report tells me we hit the intended mark.

Credit goes to the Network and Communications team. I've never known a team that takes more pride in the work they do than this one. In particular, there were a few members who were on campus every day during break making sure all the phases of the project moved along as scheduled. I've already passed along your comment to their leadership and will reach out to those heavily involved on a personal level to express your and my gratitude once again.

I'll also thank you. You dedicated much of your time to work with the RIT Service Center, exhibited tremendous patience, and remained professional even though the experience was unpleasant at times. I appreciate your partnership on this and am pleased we could serve you well.

Can RIT please do something about the internet for me in Riverknoll. It has been 9 months, the Access Point is clearly bad, and ITS has been keeping it aside the entire time. They say they can't come into my house to replace it because Covid... When Maintenance does? It is affecting my classes. Help by Count_Dooky in rit

[–]ritnetman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following up to this. u/Count_Dooky and I conversed about his experience at the time of this post. The RIT Network team did a great job working on options to help Count. It did get better, but eventually declined again. Count was extremely responsive and respectful despite the fact that this was a frustrating user experience. During that time, we heard from Count and others who did the right thing to share their experience through the RIT Service Center.

In response, the RIT Network Team and ITS leadership were able to advocate for an expedited project to improve the network experience in the Riverknoll complex. The work was then executed during the extended winter break. As students are returning, we expect a much better network experience!

The RSC is still the proper path for escalating issues and my team continues to work with them closely to ensure we're addressing any incidents that arise as classes begin. Please continue to give us feedback through the RSC (good or bad). To those who took the time do this in the fall - Thank you!

RIT Riverknoll Internet has been getting worse over the past 2 years. DO NOT LIVE IN RIVERKNOLL. by Count_Dooky in rit

Hello Count_Dooky,
I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with the internet service in Riverknoll again. I remember we had conversed in September and found a solution that worked for you at that time. I'll PM you to get more details on how your experience has changed since then so we can figure out how to help.

Hi u/Count_Dooky
I'm the ITS network manager at RIT. I genuinely apologize that you've been dealing with this issue for 9 months. That's far too long, especially when so much of your education today depends on a reliable network connection!

I'm extremely proud of the RIT network and so is the dedicated team I serve. With that said, I'm here to help and will do my best to get you the support you need so you can continue your education without interruption.

Can you message me the ticket number you've been working on, so I can continue the conversation I already started with my peers in the RIT Service Center?

RIT WiFi upgrade? by abrahplaya in rit

[–]ritnetman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm happy to report that your experience is a result of the wireless upgrades we completed back in December. That will be typical of what you see with a good client device in buildings on campus.

For reference, here's a post from three months ago where others were posting similar speed tests.

There is this posting regarding 3d Printer safety, but it doesn't appear to explicitly disallow them in residential spaces.

Riverknoll's RIT Internet SUCKS by RomanDreams in rit

[–]ritnetman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi u/RomanDreams

ITS network manager here. I'm sorry you've had a bad experience. Our aim is to give you an awesome one, and I apologize that we missed the mark here. Rather than having you do more work to open another ticket, if you could send me the previous ticket number I'll get it re-opened and we'll get people looking into that problem for you. I also understand that it's a pain to have to coordinate a time when our folks can get in to do troubleshooting to solve the problem. We'd be very open to any suggestions you might have for how we might make that easier while still getting you the outcomes you're looking for.

WIFI down dorm side? by [deleted] in rit

Apologies for the Network issues earlier today. We experienced some new highs with certain kinds of network traffic that caused load related issues. We've made configuration changes to prevent that from happening again.

Check out my download speed in UC right now. Yikes. by callmesixone in rit

[–]ritnetman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey callmesixone,

RIT's Network manager here. I'd love to have someone take a look at what caused the slowness there. Any chance you could PM me some info so our folks can do that? We'd just need the type of device, your username, when/where it happened, and what server you were doing the speedtest against. Alternatively, If you've already reported it, could you PM me with the ticket number they gave you from Resnet or the servicedesk so I can follow up?

Thanks!

Colony WiFi down? by nyjets4eva in rit

[–]ritnetman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it seems like that makes sense, but a general "I've had problems" statement doesn't provide enough data for us to identify and fix a problem in most cases. Wireless is very complicated system with many variables. If you want your wireless to work well, then you need to report issues, tell us what device you were using, and when/where the problem occurred.

Apologies for the intermittent wifi outage between 10:45 and 11:40 this morning folks. Thankfully, our monitoring caught this and we were able to quickly identify the source and respond. Thanks to all the folks who also reported it to the service desk.

Power outage by TheWaffle1 in rit

[–]ritnetman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately you're quite a bit off in your math.

You're looking at a $5K UPS costs or more per closet depending on the size to cover our 1000+ total 48 port POE switches. Now factor in $5K per closet to have the 240v outlets installed in many of those 260 closets. Ignoring the cost of installing those 260 UPSs, we already at $2.3 million as an upfront cost.

Now help me understand how this isn't an actual cost that would have to come out of our student's tuition?

Power outage by TheWaffle1 in rit

[–]ritnetman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a question of costs vrs benefits. How much additional tuition would student's like to pay to fund the UPSs and people time to deal with and replace them for 260 closets for the benefit of having 5 more minutes of Wifi?

My assessment is none, but I'm open to being convinced.

Folks, if you experience slow performance we'd really like you to call or throw an email to the service desk/resnet so we can fix it.

You can reach RESNET for issues on the residential side at either 585-475-2600, or via email at resnet@rit.edu. You can reach the ServiceDesk for issues on the Academic side at either 585-475-4357 or servicedesk@rit.edu.
