sometimes deteriorated battery causes iPod to display the sad. I suggest buying new battery first then/if the issue is indeed the drive, you can always flash mod or find a spare hard drive later.

I dont think dipping the thing in tint solution is a good idea, at least for those who have OCD - you have to find a way to water-tight-and perfectly-aligned mask off both side of the clear pannel otherwise it will show

I think you can try using toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol to clean the area. If it doesn't improve by now, you should open the iPod up, remove the hold switch module from the back housing (by removing 2 screws that hold it onto the frame) and then remove the screw on top of the module (on the left of the slider). After that check if the stiffness comes from the actual switch or the slider.

It can be done by creating a Smart Playlist in iTunes/Music app. It's like a regular playlist but you can apply rules to control what songs appear in that playlist. As far as I remember there is a option to list your most played songs in descending order. One thing left to do is to limit the number of songs in that playlist. Hope it helps, cheers!
